A 29-year-old lady identified as Shomuyiwa Azeezat has been raped and killed in her apartment in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The incident occurred in the same area where Bello Barakat, a student of Federal College of Animal Health and Production,
was raped and stabbed to death by her attackers.

The incident occurred on Thursday night at her apartment in Ijefun Moniya Road, Akinyele Local Government Area of the state.

Rape is one of the most terrible crimes on earth and it happens every few minutes. The problem with groups who deal with rape is that they try to educate women about how to defend themselves. What really needs to be done is teaching men not to rape. Go to the source and start there.

This is like telling politicians not to steal or armed robbers not to rob. Talking to all the men in the world and teaching them the bad things about rape including the consequences will not stop rape. Though I believe it will reduce it drastically. Focus should also be placed on the women to learn how to defend themselves or avoid places that expose them to rape. Even this in itself will not stop rape as some rapists plan their actions and sometimes deceive innocent victims. Rape is never the fault of the victim even though some might be careless. Still it gives no man the right to rape.

In my opinion both methods should be aggressively pursued including encouraging ladies to report rape early and teaching the society not to stigmatise victims.
