I am so very grateful for this.I was born in Agbole Mogaji in Lagos Island. My father built a house at Olodeokuta street, surulere.I have transversed the whole of Surulere,Yaba,Ebutte Meta,Stadium,Ladipo(Mushin),Idi or,Moshalashi,Alakara etc. These are very vast areas. All these places are majorly dominated by the Yorubas just for Aguda where we have a lot of Igbos and Idi Araba where we have a lot of Hausas.Coming g to Ebutte Meta cum Yaba up to Unilag, very vast areas,I have seen some Hausa states names but I just wonder why we do not have Igbo states names, mind you,all of these places are dominated more than 90% by the Yorubas. As much as I believe your history because of the owners of houses and properties here, why do you think no street or road was named after any SE states in these vicinity, thanks?
It is all for knowledge which I can pass to my friends.

Agbole Mogaji ke?

No big deal.Just looking if we can get an older person that knows the history of those names.
The only street there named after North is Kano street. And that's because this particular side of Ebute Metta, which is called Oyingbo, the side of herbert macaulay street, Cemetry, Willoughby, Market etc, these areas were dominated by successful market traders, or merchants most of whom ran their businesses in Lagos Island (dumota, Ebute-Ero, Enu Owa, Adeniji etc), and because of the huge presence of the traders, many of whom were big importers or main distributors to big FCMG companies like PZ, Wamco, Reckitt and Coleman etc, many hausas from Kano majorly will congregate there for labor offloading jobs and also security jobs, because many of these traders had warehouses in their buildings at home. Also, security was another main reason, because many of these traders would carry cash in cartons from Lagos Island and keep at home. Those aboki from Kano were good at security work (knives, daggers, jazz and fearless) and they were very honest and loyal. During that time, 60's,70's, 80's hardly will you see house without like 20 or more aboki living there

Thank you Cosby the Rich, you have raised a very important question which has some historical backgrounds

As someone who grew-up in Ebute-Metta and studied the History of the areas, these are my explanations;

1) Ebute-Metta was part of the Awori Kingdom of Otto with the Capital at Otto just before Iddo on the way to Lagos Island.

Ebute-Metta is a Yoruba meaning 'The three Harbours' i.e Iddo, Otto and Oyingbo.

In the olden days, the king, Oba Oloto of Otto controlled these harbour and had his agents collecting taxes from ships bringing goods to Lagos using those harbours.

2) Around 1850s, there was a great tension between the Christian community and adherents of Traditional Religion in Abeokuta which was on the verge of snowballing into a sectranian crisis.

On the eve of departure of some European Missionaries from Abeokuta, the native christian converts fearing that the dominant Traditionalists will descend on them in the absence of their European proctectors begged the Europeans to take them along to Lagos.

3) On getting to Lagos, the European Missionaries went to the King of Lagos to allocate land for the Egba Christians from Abeokuta but the king said Lagos was already being filled up and he couldn't afford to give the little available land to the Egba people. Instead he suggested that the Colonial Governor, John Glover contact his brother Oba (The Oloto) on the other side of Lagos, just across the Lagoon.

4) Gov Glover approached the Oloto, who agreed to give the Egbas a large tract of land from Oyingbo (Coaste Street) to Somewhere just before the lands of Yaba begins (Glover Street where LSDPC Estate was later built about 130years later).

Oyatz, true story.
I love it! The Egba settlement was result of Crown Grants authorized by land conversion under Gov Glover.

This story you just brought out confirms the authority and ownership of lands in Lagos and goes to prove that even under Colonial govt nobody takes or uses land without first applying and getting approval of the Land Owners.

Eko afterall is Aworiland! grin

Correct yourself! It is not dominated by Yorubas. Yorubas own it. There is nothing like Niger street or Makurdi street there. Stop lying. I lived in that area for 30 years. What you have is Cemetry, Lagos, Ibadan, Abeokuta, Ondo, Kano streets. Kano is the only street there named after North. The area is Ebute-metta East!

lol

Come to Ibadan street which is a little close to Costain, ask for Makurdi,Niger streets. They are inner streets around that area. You know Kano because it is a road and has a bus stop.
You don't know Yaba or Ebutte Meta.Stop arguing.

When it's Lagos and her environs, the Igbos go berserk. There is Keyamo street in Lagos. There are Ethiopia, Kinshasa, Maputo Streets in KADUNA. Streets and Roads are name by Local Government and Government to soothe themselves. I know there's no Yoruba street anywhere in the SE. Don't worry, Time will tell.

Awolowo street is in every state capital in Igboland and all important cities in Yorubaland are named in every state capital, leave ur village and travel and see.
