Mathematics affects many parts of our lives in unbelievable ways.

For example, did you know that those image filters are mathematical equations that were converted to computer algorithms?

Pictures are made of small units called pixels (picture elements). Each pixel has a numerical value. This value represents the amount of red, blue and green light in the pixel.

Your machine (phone or pc) reads this numerical value to display each pixel correctly.

When you apply a filter, you're asking your software to run an algorithm.

The algorithm takes the numerical value of each pixel and substitutes it for a variable in a mathematical formula.

The result is a new numerical value for each pixel which your machine reads to display a new image.

This simple process involves at least four fields of knowledge:

- physics: electromagnetic radiation

- mathematics

- computer programming

- and fine art (aesthetics).

I know this because I do remote sensing which involves working with satellite images.

Satellite imagery is, more or less, an advanced form of photography.

So when some people say things like "all teach in school is useless", I just look at them and keep quiet because I don't know where to start their education from.

True. Unfortunately, many people do not realise this.

Mathematics is at the core of many good things of life. Google maps (and all digital maps) wouldn't have been possible if a mathematician hadn't decided to calculate the size of the earth years ago.

The earth is flat, yet these digital maps are in represented on flat surfaces. This is only possible through a process called reprojection; a process that involves redrawing an object from a complex surface (like a 3D sphere) to a simple surface (like a 2D rectangle). It involves a lot of calculations.

Even the your location on google maps is represented as in x,y cordinates. In fact, the computer sees the world as a giant graph sheet.

I wish folks in Engineering, architecture, computer science etc can share some of the many ways mathematics serves their profession.

People should stop saying crap like mathematics or further maths is a waste of time or everything they're teaching us in school is useless. No they aren't.
