What brought about the conversation, a uni been built in a forest area.

Are we looking for beauty or economic prosperity.

If u look at IMO state from google earth, u would know that IMO state is still very much back ward than most states, owerri is very small in size.

We are talking about how to develop and expand the city and u people are bordering about forest.

How many forests does Lagos have?

Imo state is backward isn't because the state has forests, my brother. Lagos state is about 1/4 water, that's why the state is even encroaching into Ogun state in some areas.

As someone mentioned earlier, the two can go side-by-side if you ask me ... Economic prosperity and beauty

We have different point of views so we cant think the same.

I prefer 80percent of our forests cultivated and turned into farmlands than leaving it to just remain forests all in the name of beauty when its not adding anything economically to the state.

How many tourists have u seen come to IMO state to look at the forests?

Trust me, even the Lagos State government is doing a great job to change the "Lagos atmosphere" kudos to them.

But if you are given a forest atmosphere with jobs, prosperity and riches, will you go for it?

I will go for a forest atmosphere with jobs, but I hope u know that for those jobs to come alot of forests have to disappear

We igbos need to open our eyes and go into agriculture full force, during this covid19 era lockdown was the moment I discovered how low our agriculture output was, 80% of the agricultural produce shared as palatives came from the north. Even the leanest livestock.

We have much more fertile land, that doesn't need irrigation cause we have all round rainfall, instead of us looking for how to cultivate this land to provide jobs for our people and reduce capital flight and emigration na fine environment be our problem.

The plant we will plant would also help in the environment

when it comes to animal husbandry and extensive poultry farming I totally agree with you ...however you see very large scale farming that needs hectares and hectares of land? It might not be that easy to replicate in the se apart from areas around oguta/ohaji and ngor okpala because imo state is the 3rd most densely populated state in the country and also you have factor in complicate land ownership structure which doesn't exist in the north

Anything can be harnessed.

Whether densely populated or not all it requires is proper planning.

We have the ability to send the farm up, example a high rise farm for cucumbers, watermelon, tomatoes which use farming lights to grow, while hard core plant's like trees will be grown on the ground with proper spacing we can still make them look beautiful.

To me Igbo land as a whole need to re evaluate our land tenure system, to me theres no need having houses that people love in for just 1week in a year alot would have to go. For something more reasonable

Well, we both agree Imo state still has a LONGGGG way to go

You know it gives me joy when I visit this thread most times because of the intelligent arguments you guys have here. Kudos

You are correct about large scale farming not being too feasible, especially for crops like beans. But I see NO REASON, AS IN ABSOLUTELY NO REASON why vegetables should be "imported" from the north. It even makes more sense nutrition-wise to cultivate it in Imo state.

So, in this regards, I agree with coldie. While we bring in some grains from other states, let's learn to turn to agriculture and processing of agricultural produce

Your last paragraph, although it's correct, but we can't tell people what to do with their lands. You'll even find those that'll build on about 3 plots of land and only visit there for 2 weeks in a year.

That's why I totally agree with this new system someone is bringing up, where the company builds high rise buildings, then people buy into it. It is a system being done in the highbrow areas of Lagos, I'm happy it's happening in the east now.

Although they started with Enugu, but he said they'll be going to Owerri soonest (there is a thread for it on Nairaland). We can have a 6/7 storey building and every unit in the building is owned by different individuals, then owners can decide to rent it out or live in it.

Owerri-Njaba-Orlu Road was nearly completed up to Awka. A bridge in Idreato was not constructed. since then, the road could not connect Owerri to Awka.
Let's hope Julius Berger shall build the bridge and complete the road.
Below are remains of the once completed portions of Owerri-Awka road from Amaifeke-Orlu to Ekwulobia near Awka.

Still Owerri-Awka road - Amaifeke-Orlu side to Ideato to Ekwulobia. Asphalt was once fully completed on this road.

Look at the state that you are modelling after. Lagos ? Do you know the kind of air pollution in Lagos? not to talk of water and noise pollution too. See you must reserve forests. Non-reservation of forests is the reason northern Nigeria is slowly turning to desert, it's the reason soil erosion is very common in South East. No Afforestation plans

As in ehn, sometimes I sit down and wonder.
If everyone is rushing to build big mansion that they live in only in Christmas period.
Won't all the lands be finished in a span of 10 - 20 years. Wasted on mansions with little commercial potential. As of now some communities already don't have lands anymore

Which Orji Uzor kalu finished Aba, where you in Aba when he was the governor?

Every good thing in Abia is tagged Mbakwe handwork forgetting that Orji Uzor kalu did massive construction of roads in Abia state including the dilapidated ones did by Mbakwe. In his 1st tenure he did very well which earned him best governor for 2 consecutive times, everything slowed down when he started having problem with OBJ due to his 3rd bid agenda.

Before 1999 there was no good good in Aba except Umungasi road, some portions of Azikiwe road and Okigwe road, it was Orji Uzor kalu that reconstructed all the roads and constructed new ones. 70 percent of all the roads in Aba city center was constructed by Orji Uzor kalu, Mbakwe only planned the city center, did the gutters of most of the roads but did not tar them before military took over.

Orji Uzor kalu tarred all the roads even the ones in Umuahia. The major problem Orji Uzor kalu had then was poor drainage system and the ignorance of the people, they were comparing Abia state with the rich neighbours like Akwa ibom and Rivers states even till today not knowing that these states receive in a month what Abia receives in 8months.

Forget about image damage which has eaten deep into Orji Uzor kalu person. He was one of the best during his time. Don't argue with me just go and ask question and make enquiry from elderly people and people that were in Abia during the military regime. Mbakwe did very well in Aba but we did not see most of his roads we only heard starting from Omuma, Osusu, faulks, asa, factory, Clifford, Ngwa road, old express was totally washed away.

Heard the road existed before the civil war but was replaced with the new one through Akokwa because of natural disaster.

This was exactly the discussion I had with someone last time I went home. Any small space, one guy is using it to build a mansion. 20 years is too much for your prediction o, in about 10 years time, areas in Mbaise down towards Umuahia will definitely have scarcity of lands. I hope this "madness" doesn't spread to Okigwe, because it seems they are the only ones that still have reasonable amount of lands.
