Lost My Sense, Of Smell And Taste Who Else Experienced It? by omosefeeguaibor(op): 10:15pm On Jun 20, 2020*

Hello nigerians!! I do hope we all are staying safe and adhering to the health rules set by health officials(its for our own good anyway) ok to my main subject matter, I noticed for almost a week now, I am unable to smell or taste anything.

And NO it's neither corona nor cold,and it's not a matter of if one is asymptomatic or not. I realized I woke up one morning, and I had this weird feeling about something not being right with me, while I was trying to figure out what it was, I went about doing my daily routine first of in the shower, I practically couldn't smell my soap(fragrance I usually enjoy in the bathroom) I got worried and a bit scared, and thought probably someone tampered with my soap, I discarded it.

Then it got to the point where I had to eat my meal, I also discovered it had no aroma nor taste, (I could only feel the pepper sadly) then I knew I'd temporarily lost one important part of my life.

This is me that enjoy the smell of a rainy day.., the taste of chocolates, the fragrance of my soap, the burnt smell of party jollof rice, e.t.c. All those time I took it for granted I truly miss it now, cos I wish this is something I can control, but its happening to me and I have no control over it.

its just the memories of how things ought to smell I'm left with. Anyways its an experience never to be forgotten and I await the day my taste buds will be reactivated, and my sense of smell returns. For now, its just me and my imaginary sense of smell and taste.

P.S no one should come into my DM to start preaching the corona talk to me I ain't hearing it.

Do you have running nose?
I currently have a mild running nose and I can't smell or taste stuff's. Did my research and I learnt it's normal.

Don't mind them. They already heard that loss of sense of smell and taste is a symptom accompanying covid19, but they need someone to beat into them the fact that what they have might be covid19.

If you ask them if they've experienced such symptoms before, they will tell you no, yet they will argue that what they have can't be covid19.

I was waiting to at least see where you isolated yourself if unwilling to contact NCDC, and not the nonsense about not being able to smell your soap or jollof, etc.

And you ended by saying no one should preach to about covid, when all evidence points that way. Sorry, but This is quite irresponsible of you.

When will you guys realize it's not just about you, but others as well. You contact and be okay, But someone else can contact and die in the process.

Omosefeeguaibor, It's quite irresponsible for you to ignore the potential risk you may constitute to others whom you come in contact with who may not be so lucky as you are. Anosmia (loss of smell and taste) is a definitive symptom of COVID 19. The fact that you are not having any other symptom doesn't mean it's not COVID. Covid doesn't cause severe symptoms in ninety out of a hundred people. But it will be morally wrong for those 90 people to knowingly constitute a death threat to others whose immune system may have been compromised on account of age, or any other underlying disease.

I get it that you are trying to be positive about yourself. Your sense of smell and taste may even return to you quickly. But the appropriate step for you to take right now is to get tested for COVID. If you are unable to do so, ensure you self-isolate to protect others just in case it's COVID.

Remember that the fact that symptoms may disappear does not mean a COVID infected person is free from COVID. Only a test can determine that. In the absence of a test, self-isolate for two weeks at the minimum, even when you are feeling alright. This helps to prevent you from infecting another person who may in turn infect another person and the chain continues, and you don't know who will be the one to die from this chain of infection.
