A former United States National Security Adviser says President Donald Trump once argued that the $1.5bn aid given to Nigeria annually should be stopped, while funding for military operations in Afghanistan and Syria should be cut. The former NSA, John Bolton, stated this in his highly anticipated book titled, ‘In the Room Where It Happened’. Bolton, who left Trump’s administration last year, said the President of Nigeria, Maj.Gen Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), had confirmed that indeed, Nigeria was receiving a lot of money from the US annually. Trump, however, lamented that despite all the money Nigeria was receiving from the US, Nigeria was still refusing to buy American agricultural produce. Bolton further claimed that Trump argued that the US should cut funding to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, while funds should be released for the construction of a wall along the US-Mexico border. He wrote, “Following more chatter, Patrick Shanahan (then US Defence Secretary) turned to the cost reductions that maintaining the counter-terrorism capability would entail. But before he got too far, Trump broke in to complain about Congress’ refusal to fund the Mexico border wall. “Then he was off, ‘Why can’t we just get out of Syria and Afghanistan? I never should have agreed to the other two hundred (in Syria), and it’s really 400 anyway…Then after literally 45 seconds back on Afghanistan, Trump asked, Why are we in Africa?’ “He soon made it clear he wanted out of Africa altogether, expounding for some time on our $22 trillion national debt, followed by the problems of our balance-of-trade deficits, followed by complaining, again, about how Nigeria received $1.5bn annually in foreign aid, as he said the President of Nigeria had confirmed to him in an earlier visit, even though they wouldn’t buy US farm products.” Botton left the Trump administration in September 2019 after disagreeing strongly with the President over how to handle major challenges like Iran, North Korea and Afghanistan. In the book, Bolton portrays Trump as an erratic, impulsive and stunningly uninformed leader, who once assumed that Finland was a city in Russia. This would have been good news. When u check the amount of funds we get from donor agencies and foreign nations as grants and aid, including all we hear is retrieved from corrupt politicians, u then wonder why we take loans from China with reckless abandon. Most of these Aid and donations by Western nations ends up being embezzled and its never used for the purpose it was meant for. Foreign nations should begin to implement by themselves directly, whatever they intend helping Nigeria with, rather than give us the financial equivalent cos our politicians still have deep pockets in their agbadas |

Faithful4real:The hatred this man has for Nigeria is beyond imagination. Yes, we all know he was pained by Buhari's refusal to sign free trade agreement with US. He talked about Agric produce what about importation of cars, machinery, services and several others? We have a huge trade deficit with the US yet he's still angry. Bolton has described him perfectly. |

I wont blame Trump. When he found out that our president is a lifeless one and that the money have no impact to Nigerian citizens. And it's being looted thus he channel them elsewhere. |

This annual grant is a big chunk that can enhance development but of course the corruption factor is still there. |

He should funnel the funds to iNGOs and development agencies like UN, ICRC etc so they can manage those grants in Nigeria, instead of stopping it entirely. |

1.5 billion dollars annually if you convert it's 580,725,000,000.00 and remember it's annually, Jesus what does our government do with this kind of huge money and yet it does not reflect on our economy or infrastructural development |

FlordFlorez:I have read all the 10 comments on this thread, but to be frank with you, this is the most shallow, childish and dumbest. Indeed, it is completely off track, a clear depiction of lack of comprehension. I presume the topic and its narrative are way beyond your capacity. Yes, some of the comments blame Nigeria and its president, but not without actual knowledge and understanding of the issue at stake. Well, I know what you want is just "likes" and "shares". But at least, say something that makes some sense and related to the topic. If the mods are objective, you should be sanctioned for derailing. |

Victorblaze14:$1.5billion is just the total value of all US assistance to Nigeria. It is not as if the US government gives an actual cash of $1.5billion annually to the FG like some of you are trying to portray. The money usually come in form of aids, provision of consultant and experts ( usually Americans), subsidy on drugs, support to some critical federal ministries &agencies, support to NGOs, assistance to various state governments, support to our military (hardware, training, intelligence) etc. |

Olominira:Say only what you know.... Naija don't buy U. S Products. We have a surplus trade over the U. S. The oil dey purchasd from us outweighs wot ever we buy from them... The world don't use the trade balances anymore in national acct. Statistics... Instead the use the balance of payment statistics. Truly how mny stuffs hv u seen made in U. S in Nigeria..? Cars that are second hand and sold for 600 dollars is what you count..? No new car is bought in the U. S. WE rush to China for every thing yet China don't like us. U. S and Britain alone takes care of keeping over 4million H. I. V Patients alive in Nigeria. What do we actually gain from China..? |

Why he didn't succeed in stopping the aid is what annoys me. What is the extent of paying aid to a private pocket? Besides, this aid is part of reasons why the military will never be sincere in fighting Book Haram. Shebi when Boko become defeated, aids will stop. The Nigeria military I know will do anything provided money flows. This why they even give Boko Haram tactical support. |

Trump is pro America. He said it before he won the election in 2016. He has always maintained "America first" every country should mind their business. |

I totally agree with Trump stopping/pausing the aids given to Nigeria cos we currently have jackals & hyenas in our leadership affairs. But I disagree with him with the reason that Nigeria doesn't purchase America's Agricultural produce. Shey America dey produce Garri ni? |

bigpicture001:You actually missed the information, data from NBS shows we have a huge trade deficit with the US up to N445bn. You said used car.....so money used in buying used cars from US doesn't contribute to the US economy right? Pls study more about simple economics. If people are not selling their used ones, demand for new cars would be slow. Besides, it's a huge profit to issurance companies in the US. Also, Nigeria buys new cars from the US. Even recently, House of Rep ordered over 400 Toyota from there and it's a yearly ritual. That's just an example to proof you wrong. About oil, you are not updated, pls read current issues. US oil is actually competing with our oil in the international market and US is no longer buying from us again |
