The National Disaster Management Agency (AFAD) said the quake occurred at 1.03 pm, local time. The governor of Van, Mehmet Emin Bilmez, said the quake caused “moderate” or “strong” damage to homes in some 15 neighbourhoods in Ozalp as well as in a dozen nearby villages. Five people were hospitalised with slight injuries after trying to to escape damaged structures, the governor said. He added: “No citizen was trapped under rubble." The condition of those injured is said to be stable, and they are undergoing treatment at the Özalp State Hospital. HaberTurk news channel said it was felt in the neighboring provinces of Izmir, Aydin and Mugla. Mayor Besim Dutlulu told HaberTurk that residents left their homes in panic.
