bidexiii:Most north African nations have a good tax/revenue to gdp ratio for instance Egypt has more than 15%, Algeria has more than 35%, Morroco has more than 26% while Tunisia has more than 30% only Sudan and Libya has a low tax to gdp ratio. For any country to develop at a right pace, it has to have it Tax/revenue to gdp ratio pegged at atleast 15% according to IMF. This is where Nigeria has been lagging behind all this years, many blame our woes on corruption and say atleast we have oil, but the truth is that oil only did sustain us for just two decades (1960s- 1980s) and since then our problem has been mainly revenue shortfall year in year out cos nobody can effectively fight corruption to the brim without adequate revenue.. Nigeria has one of the lowest tax to GDP ratio in the world. We are wasting too much precious time, If we can get our Tax to gdp to about 15% or even 20% and also reduce funds allocated to state n local governments through FAAC to just 25% (cos FG can't continue to fund states n LGs, it doesn't make sense), Nigeria's revenue annually would even be higher than that of South Africa.. |

youghs:Raising tax? Don't u think everything in Nigeria is already to xpensive |
| Re: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by Whyem15: 11:31am On Jun 28, 2020 |
GeneralFarouq:Government pay for a lot of unnecessary stuffs They subsidize a lot of things for the citizens (especially unnecessary things) check the amount that has been spent on subsidizing fuels in the last 10 years and calculate what that money could have done. Government pays about #39.59 per litre of petrol you buy, Nigerians use between 55 million - 60 million litres every day. That's average of #2.2 billion spent on subsidizing oil for Nigerians everyday. |
| Re: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by youghs: 11:36am On Jun 28, 2020 |
GeneralFarouq:What we need to do is increase tax collection(cos many default) and to also raise tax.. The major misconception about raising tax rate is that it increases price of goods..Yes tax may increase prices of goods but that's only temporary( I used "may" because they are alot of interventions that can be done to make sure prices of goods don't increase when tax rate rise e.g Reducing fuel price to about N40 per litre through subsidies during the time frame and alot of other subsidies that can be implemented) If we leave our tax/revenue to gdp at that low level, cost of living will only keep increasing step by step like it has always been all this while.. But if we raise the tax, it may lead to sharp increase in cost of living for a while but in the long run the needed roads would be constructed, the needed rail, port, power, security, finance and so many more would be done. Things like these would reduce the cost of production which will bring about increase in investment from foreign and local businesses(Nigeria is an attractive country for business cos of our large population) thereby leading to reduction in price of goods, increase in employment, standard of living and so on.. We can't continue to deceive ourselves by relying on resources, it used to be okay for us but not anymore |

Only government workers and those working in registered organizations pay income tax, and that is just a tiny percentage of the population. It will be very difficult to make sure everyone that's supposed to pay tax pays it the normal way, that is why I support some government policies like raising VAT and use of toll gates/booths and many other ways to collect money from the citizens. |

youghs:More revenue can be raised by more efficient tax collection and ENDING subsidies. No need to increase taxes and no need for subsidies. According to NBS, Nigeria spent about 10trillion naira on subsidies on petroleum products. Add in the fact that the 55 million litres NNPC claims we consume is an inflated figure to get extra loot from fake importation and subsidy. If other factors like government wastage(by buying unnecessary items(eg new SUVs every year) and stupidly inflated items in budgets (like the agency that bought 1,000 laptops for 800 million naira(incidences like this abound) or the crazily silly and inflated allowances for government officials(like the security votes to governors and ministers or the newspaper allowances (some departments get up to 150k in allowances per month) can be tackled, you will be shocked at how much extra income can be squeezed out of this country. Tax increase should be a last resort. If only companies like PROFORCE can be given CONCRETE SUPPLY ORDERS for a large number of MRAPS and/or armoured vehicles, they can expand their production capacity and deliver up to 150 per year(they will also pay tax on these and we have more money to spend). Its an annoying vicious cycle.... Terrorists attack us and we lose good men and women, we complain their activities affect the economy and need money to buy equipment to fight them, we get the money and politicians waste money on unnecessary things then complain that there is no money to fight the terrorists, we send in troops with minimal equipment to fight them.... The cycle repeats itself |
