Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has announced the appointment of Professor Adesegun Fatusi as the new Chairman of the State Inter-ministerial Committee Against COVID-19.

This was disclosed in a statement made available to Igbere TV on Saturday in Akure, signed by the Governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ojo Oyewamide.

The development is coming days after Akeredolu tested positive for COVID-19. He had also vowed not to handover to his embattled deputy, Agboola Ajayi, in acting capacity. Ajayi has since decamped to the PDP to contest the state Governorship election against his boss, Akeredolu.

The deputy governor had reportedly sought his boss's approval to take charge while he(Akeredolu) is isolating, including leading the fight against COVID-19 in Ondo. But the Governor refused to hand over the reins of power to his deputy.

In the statement on Saturday, Akeredolu, however, argued that the appointment of the new COVID-19 response team boss followed the demise of the former health commissioner, Dr Wahab Adegbenro, whom he said was leading the fight until now.

The statement reads, “Following the unfortunate demise of the Ondo State Commissioner for Health, Dr Wahab Adegbenro, the Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, SAN has appointed Professor Adesegun Fatusi as the new Chairman of the State Inter-ministerial Committee Against COVID-19.

“Until his death, Dr Adegbenro was the Chairman of the State Inter-ministerial Committee where he served diligently to the admiration of all.”

Igbere TV reports that the new chairman of the Ondo State Inter-ministerial Committee Against COVID-19, Professor Fatusi is the current Vice Chancellor of the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo state.

“He(Fatusi) is expected to continue from where our late Medical Hero, Adegbenro stopped. His appointment is aimed at preventing a vacuum as the State experiences a disturbing spike of repeated cases of COVID-19,” Akeredolu said.

Prof. Fatusi is a professor of Community and Public Health and past Provost of the College of Health Sciences at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Nigeria.

He has previously served as the Director of the OAU’s Institute of Public Health and worked with the UNFPA as reproductive health advisor.

He is currently the chairman of Nigeria’s National Technical Working Group on Adolescent Reproductive Health and Development.

He has also served as the Lead Consultant for the development of Nigeria’s national policy on the health and development of adolescents and young persons, national reproductive health policy, and national policy on HIV/AIDS.

He had served previously, on the Ministerial Committee on Health Sector reform as well as on the Board of the National Universities Commission (NUC) of Nigeria.

Interesting...The CV of this VC fits the task. Hopefully he does it with professionalism, else he may be caught in the cross fire between the governor and his deputy. Akeredolu should know that betrayal is universal for people with no principles. Akeredolu may choose not to handover to his deputy for obvious reasons, but he shouldn't equate his deputy's ambition for betrayal cos sometimes, it's not people who change, it's their mask that falls off.

If you were the Governor, will you appoint a betrayal and treacherous person like Agboola Ajayi to head the fight against COVID-19 in the state? He will do everything to frustrate the effort of the Governor.

Akeredolu is not equating his Deputy's ambition as betrayal BUT the fact that he was trusted with some key positions, which is unusual in Nigeria's political arena for a Governor to give his Deputy the freehand to operate, Agboola Ajayi used that opportunity to spread his tentacles towards his ordinate ambition. He allowed the Governor to give him all his trust before betraying him

Akeredolu conceded so many powers and influence to his Deputy to a level never before seen in the history of Ondo State and that of the entire country, even till now.

In this clime where deputy governors are mostly treated as mere spare tires by their bosses right from the Second Republic in 1979 till date, Governor Akeredolu decided, in his lawyerly wisdom, to take a radical departure from the norm by carrying his Deputy along in all his gubernatorial assignment in the thinking that they were co-partners steering the wheel of development of the state for the overall benefit of the people.

Virtually all the political appointments in Ondo South were handed over by the Governor to his Deputy to coordinate, first in the annals of history of the state. Several times the Governor was away from the seat of power, several times he handed over the instruments of power to Hon Ajayi in accordance with the spirit and letters of the Constitution in the thinking that the Deputy would extend to him the 100 percent loyalty expected from a well-treated subordinate. How wrong the Governor was.

While the Governor was doing everything he could to tag along his Deputy in the governance of the state, unknown to the Governor, over two years ago, the Deputy had allegedly begun to make surreptitious and subterranean moves to undermine his principal with the sinister intention of rendering him politically useless before the masses of Ondo State so that he could realize his own inordinate ambition of taking over the reins of power either by hook or by crook.

It is very obvious that you're not very well informed. I am Ondo First Born. I've lived in Ondo State all my life.

Akeredolu has performed far more than his predecessors within 3 and half years in Office. He has practically touched all sectors of the state. The Ondo-Linyi Industrial hub in Ore is the high point for me.

Akeredolu inherited a state in comatose with 7months unpaid salaries and pension with alot of debts. He took the job head-on and he cleared 6 months out of the 7months while paying the current salaries as and when due. As at today, Akeredolu has Constructed more roads than his predecessors with over 300km of road networks completed within 3years despite the low revenue and the challenges he met on ground. I can go on and on.

Agboola Ajayi was a cankerworm in Akeredolu's government. People advised Akeredolu not to pick him as running mate in 2016 but because Akeredolu trusts people easily, he picked him. Agboola Ajayi has been frustrating the government of Akeredolu.

Did you know that Agboola Ajayi handled some urban renewal projects of the Akeredolu-led administration meant to give a facelift to the people of Ese Odo Local Government Area where Hon. Ajayi hails from. Rather than execute the projects to specifications, having been duly financially mobilized, he did a poor job, some he even failed to finish; some he did not touch at all.

For full disclosure purposes, virtually all the capital projects of the Akeredolu-led government in Ese Odo and Ilaje Local Government Areas were awarded to a company. A Company which belongs to Agboola Ajayi. ITDC.

Again, when the Governor confronted him on the infractions, the Agboola Ajayi could not provide any tangible explanation to rationalize the shoddy execution of the projects. The Some-Igbotu Road cost the State Government about N600m. The project was handled by the same firm. Ditto for the road linking Agadagbaodon and Amapere running into hundreds of millions of naira, all handled by the firm allegedly belonging to the Deputy Governor.
