DSTV is making money from Africa magic, which is why we have Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo channels plus extra 1 and 2. Plus, Nollywood makes money too.



My friend, you want government to pay EPL millions of dollars we don't have so that less than 2 million Nigerians can watch Premier league.

No government does that in the world, not developed, not developing.

EPL rights are expensive. It is like you think that they are cheap. It isn't. They are very expensive. So exepnsive, that BBC in the UK until very recently was not able to pay for rights to air Premier League matches, despite being the equivalent of the NTA in Nigeria. And BBC earns far more than NTA can ever dream of., yet until recently, they could not afford premier league rights, and even now they are allowed to only show 2 games per week.

If you cannot afford EPL.....choose startimes. Or free TV. DSTV is not a neccesity in your life. In the years to come, you won't regret it.

This is not the first time we are hearing this and honestly we don't care. I'm sure nothing will be done by the time the DSTV drop some millions. To put an end to this monopoly, I believe we the subscribers have a lot to do. We could stop subscribing for a month to protest our displeasure to this endless increase in tariff. DSTV is so useless that even during the lockdown when service provider like MTN are giving 10 free SMS per day, DSTV can't even leave the basic Nigerian station like Channel and TVC when subscription expires. I believe we the subscribers are the only one who can break their monopoly and bend them to stop taken us for a ride. If we wait for the government that song will change when they are bribed, then we are in for long thing

Don't rule out this Govt. Nigerians are very cunny and good at looking for loopholes to circumvent the system.

Don't be surprised that there is a company waiting on standby that will buy this rights exclusively from the producers directly and sell to Dstv, Startimes and Kwese Tv.

Imagine if the rights total about $500millon, that would mean about $150million from each paytv right? You may laugh it off and say that DStv can simply afford it and still maintain the largest market share but don't celebrate yet. Due to our corrupt practices, d Nigerian promoted company (in this case Startimes) would then go ahead to drastically reduce prices drawing customers to them and making it difficult for the likes of DStv to compete.

Mind you, them reducing their prices is because they know if Startimes is unable to pay their share of $150million they can easily put their hands in the cookie jar by writing a memo to CBN of course backed by the powers that be, that way they get to amass so much without no accountability and those bribes DStv refused to pay or where paying would then look like chicken change

I have seen this a lot of times, I tell u d average Nigerian is corrupt, and some Nationals like d Chinese don't mind to roll in dirty waters.

This attempt to break Dstv's monopoly is a smoke screen to get to the cookie jar, that's all. Don't forget, OBJs Govt gave Hitv the legal framework to operate and left their hands out of it, if it were today, corrupt officials would have found a way to keep it afloat using Govt funds.

Don't forget the recent story with Polaris Bank and d Funta's

They even refuse interconnectivity with Econet in order to push their claim that they are "Every Where You Go".
Look at those prices compared to now and Factor in inflation and tell me that's not exploitation and that I'm lying. It was Glo that came all of a sudden and delivered per secon billing and #1 sim card (#10k sim card with #9,999 credit inclusive).

Considering that these rights are priced in dollars whereas revenues used to purchase them are generated in naira. Honestly, I'm gutted at the vast majority of posts in this thread. However, I'm not surprised as Nigerian politicians have over the years neglected the education sector which is why the citizenry think Cable TV is an essential commodity.

Business monopoly is seriously anti business to consumers... If you remember what MTN did to Nigerians before the emergence of Glo and others you will understand that business competition benefits consumers more than monopoly market.

MTN could manufacture their cards in Jupiter or even refuse to make afternoon calls
and that doesn't make them a monopoly. And people weren't crying then that they
can't afford it.

At the end of the day, what brought down the cost of calls was the competition and not
blackmail and price-fixing by the government.
Even today, NCC is the one preventing further reduction in data cost.
That's to show you the power of the free market.

Anyone who can't afford DSTV shouldn't use it.
DSTV also has competitors, use them or not use at all.

You have derailed from the real argument. Nobody should subsidize. What I have said its simple. If multichoice want to keep operating, they should let us only pay for what we consume, if not, they should leave. Others will come. I watch most of my matches online now though with reasonable amount

It can be the lowest rate but if they don't bill on pay as you go basis, it becomes the highest.
If one subscribes 5k a month and only gets to sit watch for less than 100hrs in a month out of 720hrs, then it is cheating. Pay as you go is non negotiable

The thing is, back in 2006, when HiTV took the EPL rights away from DSTV and left them with 2 games per weekend, DSTV subscriber base not only did not drop, it still kept on rising.

That's because, contrary to popular opinion, people in Nigeria get DSTV not just for football.

1.Mothers and young women watch Telemundo, ZeeTV, africa magic, TLC, E tv, Food channel, BBC lifestyle, etc.

2.Children and some teenagers watch at least 6-7 children's channels . (The grandson of one of my mum's friends once got into argument with his grandfather after the latter restricted his watching his favuourite children's channel. Lol. The boy even get mouth report him grandpapa!)

3.Even men watch other sports apart from football. Tennis, boxing, athletics, etc.

4.Then there is the religion channel. DSTV has 7-8 christian channels. And 2 muslim channels.

5.And that's not talking about the music channels....up to 7 of them, for young guys and girls.

Even if Premier league goes, DSTV has plenty other content.

Switch to startimes. Startimes carries FA cup, Europa, French league and Bundesliga. DSTV still carries LaLiga and Italian league sans EPL.
