Yes, both are solid body-on-frame vehicles too.

@HeavenlyBang kindly shed more light on this ford explorer. I know it has no second hand value but y is it cheap? Are the parts more expensive than Highlander and pilot n is d maintenance on the high side? Is the fuel consumption same with pilot or like Volvo xc90? Thanks

Acura mdx: not a proper truck but its an suv, has plenty power and its AWD, plus it has proven to be reliable.

Lexus rx: same with the mdx but with slightly lesser power, makes up for it thou with better fuel consumption. make sure you get the awd because majority of what nigerians import are just front wheel.

Lexus GX: this is what you are looking for. Proper body on frame with good power, very reliable.

Volvo xc90: also good. Not a proper truck thou but atleast its an suv with plenty power. ask valarinz for the reliable year.

Older generation lexus Lx470: proper truck. Its what you are looking for, but i'm not sure if your budget can get it sha. Ultra reliable but na fuel guzzler.

Toyota hilux or tacoma: i'm also not sure if your budget can get it. But they are built to take torture.

Avoid range or landrover and german brands.

OP may also be best served looking at a 2008 Pathfinder.

American cars don't have good resale value in Nigeria. The explorer is a good vehicle, parts are a bit pricey but they don't breakdown easily. kazeeming the Ford would be the beginning of the end

off-road vehicles that are pocket friendly

1. Mitsubishi Montero/Shogun 06 upwards

2. Nissan Pathfinder 05 upwards ensure you do the radiator bypass.

3. Volvo XC90

4. Volvo XC60

5. Honda Pilot Touring

I didn't put Toyota or Lexus cause they are over priced

GX 470 is the top pick for Nigerians. Its so reliable it might outlive you haha. Whatever you know about fuel economy should be thrown out the window, unless of course you own a refinary. Price: late 3s to about 6 million depending on the model year. Good but Overpriced!!!

The XC90 is not as off-road worthy as the GX but its not afraid of getting dirty. You can get a 2007 year for about 1.8 million.

Land Rover LR3, Sport. Above and Beyond. Take their word for it.Not including the Range Rover is like going against the law. The set back is that they weigh as much as the Titanic so you'll be a celebrity at gas stations. All mechanics will see when you drive in is dollar signs. About 3M for the LR and about 3.5 to 4M for the Sport depending on the year.

I'd personally go for the 2009 MDX. Its a mild off-roader which I think is just about good enough unless only if you work for NatGio and want to document your journey in some romote area in central Africa or you plan on visiting death valley.

Touareg is underestimate but non the less incredibly good. Love it. The ford explorer isn't bad either.

OP asked for off-road SUVs, folks are bringing in crossovers and multi-purpose vans (MPV).
No one should call an RX, highlander, Volvo XC, pilot, acura . They're not proper offroad trucks.

OP, your best bet are
1. Toyota 4runner (2003-2007)
2. Lexus LX470/Land Cruiser 200 series (2000-2007)
3. Mercedes Benz ML 320/350 (1999-2006)
4. Pathfinder/QX4 (2001-2004)
5. Mitsubishi Pajero
6. Nissan Patrol.

I have Infiniti QX4 that you will love. It's even less than your budget. Toks

The best for you is in this order. 1. Lexus GX470. (Doesn't really consume as they say. A user's review) 2. Toyota 4runner. 3. Nissan pathfinder/Infiniti QX4 4. Ford Explorer sport Trac from 07 upward.

Most affordable in this lot listed will be the Montero.

Honorable mention will be Ford Escape
