A friend left a 900k per month job in Nigeria for Canada, he is regretting it a bit though.

Different strokes for different people. One man's meat is another's poison.

It's just a matter of time ND he will settle in regret wld be a thing of the past. so many of my guys have left and struggled at first but now the have settled in, tell ur friend to stop calculating his N900k salary, few pple really earn that big abroad, but most are very very comfortable.

US/Canada is a lot higher? When considering migrating to a different country, you better not just think about the salary. The cost of living and growth are other factors you may want to consider. Besides this moment what Nigeria needs are innovators, people that can start something up, especially in Tech. If your friend is quite good and he's got a creative independent mind, maybe he should consider starting something up. Nigeria is a market waiting to explode. I hope Nigerians can realize this and get to work before these foreigners take over everything, and leave us with very little to call our own.

Will bitter neighbors and corrupt law enforcers allow that?

The Nigerian addiction to wealth has become a mental condition. N450K is enough for anyone to live comfortably in Nigeria around family & friends in peace & happiness. Not to mention another foriegn exchange income source. What else could anyone want?

If you set up a tech company, with the jobs under your belt you could make as much as Canada, if not more. The company in charge of CAC website, if you know how they're making, tears will run down your eyes.

I just dont get some people.

You people will just openly vomit your ignorance here. $20 per hour minimum wage does not apply to every workers in the bank. A minimum wage is meant for the least qualified employee and at $20 per hour, it's a dream job even for Nigerian graduate. With that amount, a worker who put in 8 hour per day will earn 160 use. That's over 40 thousand naira per day and close to 1.2 million naira per month. This for a least qualified employee. Tell me a bank that pay graduate 250 k in Nigeria.

There will be a time that ppl will seek to leave but won't be able to again despite their money.

That day will never come.

If you get better money, most countries in the world will welcome you.

Even the US has a residency by investment type program. Most countries do.

And some countries will grant you citizenship if you donate.

Money talks everywhere.

You didn't answer the question, goofball.

Instead of being sarcastic, you could have just easily used Google.

A quick search can pull up average salaries in the US and cost of living in different cities.

He's not experienced. Your experience has no relevance so far you're not trained in their system. A professor left here for Canada couple of years ago only to end up driving forklift for a living despite the number of publications. So far you're not trained in their educational system or have any similar working experience in the same, you're only entitled to menial and non-professional jobs. I'm exclusively speaking for Canada.

That's not the same in the field of programming bro... You experience matters in the field of Engineering and programming... take that or leave it.

People get employed directly from India, china, Nigeria and other countries without even education.. Your experience matters alot especially due to the fact that hes worked with Banks to the extent of earning 120k dollars from Projects.

Again, in Engineering and IT, experience matters alot.

Lol, does Nigeria spend dollar?
If he makes let's say 5k$ over there, he won't be any different from someone making 500k here because over there he I'll still spend in $ not naira.. unless he is talking about serene environment which also comes with its own downside like racism and stuffs.

For me 500k# here over 5k$ there anyday anytime

Dont mind the ignorant people like him.
If you work, live and earn $5K in the US, you will pay your Rent in Dollars (maybe like $1500), you will buy food and dress in the US in Dollars, you will pay insurance in Dollars, phone, internet, electricity in Dollars. At the end of the day, you will spend about $3,500 in a month of costs.

All those things, in Nigeria, do not cost more than #200K, so #450K will just do you good, with a lot of change left over

Such a pity he left such pay, he would have used that amount to achieve so much in Nigeria and later leave Nigeria if he want to while his bank account keep getting alerts from Nigeria.

It's not impossible to make such money but my question is if he's making $120k from nigeria what's the point of leaving?

With that type of money he will buy enough real estate

Does he have a github or LinkedIn? If not it's a lie Esp if he dosent have the latter
That's what people don't understand, everything is not to rush abroad, such money can make you very rich in Nigeria, own good properties in Nigeria and you can decide not to live in Nigeria and live in abroad with cash coming from Nigeria and you can invest in overseas.

Programmers don't need to travel for a job! They can do their jobs via the internet!

Let him stay here, while alsp doing remote jobs for internet clients!

Life here in Nigeria is cheap! Unless a company abroad wants to give him a very good paying position that would warrant his presence!

LOL.

1. A programmer will make more than $5k monthly by far.
2. Even if he makes only $5k monthly........$5k in US will go much more than N500k in Nigeria and he will save more than he will ever save in Nigeria.
3. Forget how much he makes in Nigeria.......this country na suffer.

What is really important is for him to leave legally if the opportunity comes because if he plans to be an illegal immigrant he will be jumping from a frying pan to fire.
Your Monika befits you Sir. You are a sharp man indeed. I still wonder why any reasonable person will be contemplating whether or not to leave the shit hole. Always baffles me. Better run if you have the opportunity @op and @op's friend

A quick question I want to ask and know hearts of peeps.

I have a badass programmer pal. Full stack engineer. Recently did a job for someone, and made some real good cash. Like up to $120,000. The money came from building software for 3 microfinance banks in the country.
He earns over 450,000 Naira as salary here in Nigeria as well. We got talking yesterday and he's telling me he cannot stay in Nigeria, that he's resigning immediately after lock down for airports are over. I dnt just understand hw people will still be asking this kind of question in this age. Wr are no mire in the 70's and 80's anymore if you are single Oga find your way, if you are married Oga still find tour way. When you settle come back and pick your family. Even with 50k USD you will be fine if you do not spend anyhow. Be prudent and frugal with money you will be fine

His argument is 450,000 Nigerian Naira equals
1,162.97 United States Dollar, wheras in the US / Canada for instance, the salary is way higher.

Question is what do you think ?

must you rent a 1500 dollars apartment. Rent a room with no shared amenities for 600 dollars or less and you will be fine. If you are married start small u till both of you have something to bring to the table. Use half of your paycheck to settle bills save the half. Dnt be like most american that depend on pay check to pay check.

Trust me, I'd leave even with 1M salary.

That's not true. A house of 1500 dollars in a Month will cost you over 15million naira per year in Nigeria. Please compare what's comparable not foolish things.

I am in the US and all I pay in month is about 600dollars including unlimited Wifi, trash and electricity. This same one bed house will cost over 7million per annum in Nigeria. If you add cost of petrol, security and data monthly. It will be up to 8million. Note also, I use over 70gb on my phone and close to 150gb data on my laptop every month on my laptop. I have access to the Gym, pool, drives my car on a good road. I do not also have to pay for Cooking gas
