NAIRALAND BOOK CLUB (NBC) by Jack273: 4:47pm On Jul 09, 2020
Good day my fellow book lovers. After much consideration we have decided to start our very own book club right here, Nairaland Book Club (NBC). This will be a place for all book lovers and those that have always wanted to be a part of a book club.

Some people still have the mentality that Nigerians don't read (even in schools our lecturer dey say na la cram la pour we dey do) but I know this is not true so let's come together and prove them wrong. Not only proving them wrong, let's start a revolution.

In other to make this NBC a success, there will be some grand rules. These rules may be modified from time to time so do refer back here for more information.

Format

1. Two books will be selected each month as the books of the month

2. Each book will be read, discussed, reviewed etc within a period of 2 weeks (ie 14 days)

3. At least one of the books each month must be an African book (ie written by an author of African origin whether based home or abroad)

4. Only active members are qualified to nominate a book (more than one nomination leads to disqualification)
Note: active members are those who take part in the biweekly reviews

5. All nominations must be done on the NBC Nomination thread within 24 hours on the 23rd of each month

6. Voting starts on the 23rd of each month and ends 11:59pm of the last day of the month

Those who are not qualified to nominate a book

1. Those who did not participate in the previous month review (ie passive members)

2. Those that their nominated book was selected as one of the books of the month within the last 3 months

3. Those that nominated more than one book in a month

4. Those that nominate a book that have already been nominated within the same month

Note that if a book is nominated more than once within a month, only the first will be acknowledged. The other votes will not be counted. Therefore the best way to make sure a book is selected is to vote for it by liking and sharing it and not by nominating it again within the same month

5. Those with criminal record (ie those that are guilty of derailing or insulting anyone on this thread). Take note

How to nominate a book

Go to the NBC Nomination thread ( https://www.nairaland.com/5980863/nbc-nomination ) on the 23rd of each month and nominate in this format:
Book title:
Author:
Category: (ie African or foreign)

How to vote for a book
Go to the NBC Nomination thread from the 23rd of each month to "like" and "share" the nominated book of your choice, you are advised to only vote for one in each category ie African and foreign. Voting ends 11:59pm on the last day of each month

Note that each "like" carries 1point while each "share" carries 2points

Books that are not allowed

1. Comic books
2. Text books (school books)
3. Religious books
4. Career books (Books on programming, fishing, etc)
5. Books that are not available online for download

Every member is required to review each book at least once and preferably at the end of each 2 weeks using this format
Book title:
Author:
Category: (ie African or foreign)
Rating: (over 10 eg 8/10)
How long it took you to finish it: (eg 6 hours, 3 days, 1 week etc)
What I learnt:

NOTE: This is what qualifies you as an active member so you can also nominate a book

WARNING: The NBC Nomination thread is only for nomination, so no posting on the thread. If you have any question, you can ask them here. Anyone who breaks this rule should be mentioned here to delete their post and second time offenders will enter the blacklist for that month.

For the month of July we need to select our books for the month but since we are just starting, the timeline will be different.

Procedure
1. Go to the NBC Nomination thread and nominate a book
2. Nomination ends by 11:59pm tonight
3. Voting starts immediately and ends by 5:59pm tomorrow 10th of July
6. Vote by liking and sharing the nominated book of your choice.

1. Make sure to follow the Nomination format and rules

Warning
You will be blacklisted if you
1. nominate a book in the wrong format.
2. nominate a book after the time (ie 11:59pm tonight)
3. do anything on the NBC Nomination thread other than nominating or voting for a book (e.g ask questions, comment, or quote)
4. nominate more than one book
5. flaunt any other rule written here or on the other group.

Read the rules before you do anything, ignorance is not an excuse. PLEASE COMPLY

Book: Orchestra of Minorities
Author: Chigozie Obioma

Relatable,intriguing, Authentic

The story talks about the Igbo tribe, their Chi( gods) and ancestors.
It talks about a young man called Nonso whose life became something else when he saved a lady from committing suicide on the bridge..

His story is not told by him rather by his Chi (Guardian angel in igbo language). His chi can even negotiate with chukwu (God) on his behalf.. His Chi can't force him to do things but can only suggest things to him through thinking and imagination.

Romance was born and he found himself sacrificing a lot for the love of his life.. The lady is a pharmacist while Nonso is just a poultry farmer.. So much difference between both parties from educational background to Financial Background..
He calls her “Mommy,” the way other men might refer to a lover as “sweetheart” or “darling.” “Every good woman is my mommy,” he says.

He was scammed when he was trying to get into the white man's land (Cyprus) to be precise. His childhood friend called Jamike deceived him and took all his hard earned money.. His nightmare began..

He was arrested in Cyprus for crime he didn't commit and he spent four years in prison before the truth became unveiled..

He couldn't get married to the woman of his dreams because it was too late when he came back to Nigeria..

This is not a love story but a story of rage, Class,Hustle..

These are part of the quotes I copied from the book

-Hatred is a vandalism of the human heart. A man seeking justice with his own hands must dispense it as quickly as possible, or he risks being destroyed by his own dark desire.

-tomorrow is pregnant no one knows what it will birth.

-Love is a thing that cannot be lightly destroyed in a heart in which it has found habitation.

"Orchestra of minorities" as used in the book refer to the cries and mourning of the birds whenever one of them is being slaughtered or killed by hawks which in human world too it is used to describe the voices of the mases And less privileged
- The ones whose voices ain't heard
-The ones who can't stand and fight not because they're weak but because the spirit of fear is In them.
- those who risk everything in order to better their lives and forge ahead.

If you're expecting something like "Happily ever after", I am sorry to say that this book isn't for you because it ended sadly...

All the same,it is one of those books that you will want to read over and over again.

Chigozie obioma writes well. He described the Igbo cosmology very well and I will say "He is indeed a talented writer"..

Thanks

Geminita you are already done with the book. I read about 60 pages today but I'm no where near the end. I'll read your review once am done. I need to improve my reading speed.
The book is interesting but quite longer than I'm used to.

When I saw your review, I avoided reading it cos I didn't want to get a glimpse of what the end would look like before I get to the end myself. But I just finished reading the book and your review, and you really analyzed it to the core. Nice one Geminita.

I also think we should pick a day when the review should be done, a day we know everyone must have been done with reading, that way, we can avoid spoilers.

I think Ana4love is right so let's pick a day for reviews.

I just had an idea now. Since we will be finishing (at least supposed to) the two books at the end of the month, we can start the reviews next month.

That is the books we read this month will be reviewed throughout next month So we will have a whole month for reviews and discussions without spoilers and a whole month of reading.

This way we can keep the thread alive.

It's a good suggestion tho
