I strongly opposed it because not everyone has interest in child bearing
To me the main purpose of marriage is companionship

Procreation can be done without getting married

The answer about "MAIN PURPOSE" is subjective.

Ideally, Marriage is for COMPANIONSHIP and PARTNERSHIP. with those using Bible citations, they must realize that the main purpose why God created Eve in the first place was because "It was not good for man to be alone".

Procreation was just an aftermath.

Different people have different opinions, hence most people will agree that it's for procreation in that, it's the only legal/righteous way to procreate.

Companionship is the main reason, every other thing is secondary.

There's nothing like a main purpose.
People get married for different reasons.

It's subjective.

It depends ...

The psychological motivation is to derive a sense of stability and feelings of security. This is what marriage vows 'till death do us part' are mainly about, to have someone until you are no more, someone you can depend on. Then the couple start a family and create a micro-community, have children who they hope will look after them in old age. This amplifies the feeling of security. There is more to it psychologically but I believe that the need to belong and feel secure is the main driving force in all of it.

From a religious angle, people get married to 'legalize' sex.

From the sociological perspective people get married because they have been conditioned to believe that this how it is done. It's a convention, the norm. We all know what happens when people put off marriage for 'too long' or refuse to get married altogether.

From the legal perspective to make the union lawful which contains a pragmatic aspect since it determines inheritance rights etc.

It depends on the individual which purpose is of greater importance to them. I guess having a sense of security is what is most important to most people. Feel free to disagree.

Th purpose of marriage as far as Nigerian society is concerned:

1. Legal/Righteous fõcking & a Personal Cook, for the man.
2. Financial/Emotional Provision & a Personal Handyman, for the woman.

You are right. Companionship is primary. Fruitfulness is a bonus.

Nevertheless if you are infertile or feel you don't want children which may also mean you hate sex you should come up front and be truthful to him about it but of course even if he agrees, when disagreements come, some men may use it against you.

So just know you actually signed up for.

It has.
It's mainly for soul companionship (before any other), not just physical.
The soul yearns for company more than the flesh, and only by marriage can two souls be bound.
