This is a nice thread. The OP is really blunt and sincere. Despite spending almost a year in Germany as a student; I can write the good, bad and the ugly based on my experience. Once I am less busy, I will share my experience.

In Germany it is customary that men sit down to pee in the toilet. You’d even see signs that tell you it is wrong to stand, both men and women sit down to pee. They find it extremely impolite to stand and pee. They believe you have to keep the toilet clean and not splash your urine around, as a man.

You can stand to pee in a club or public toilet that is usually unhygienic. But in homes, hospitals and offices, you are supposed to sit down to pee.
This one took me time to get used to and even till today, I still stand to pee. Some offices got tired of complaining, that they now have 2 toilets. One for those men who stand to pee and the other for those who sit to pee.

I struggled with this, with my first flatmates. They’d always complain that I didn’t sit to pee. I was also using water to clean my bumbum and some of the water would splash on the toilet seat.
One day my flatmate’s girlfriend went to pee. As soon as she sat down, she felt water on the seat and she screamed. Since that day, I always wipe the toilet seat whenever I use water.

I don’t like to use only tissue paper because I feel like it doesn’t clean me properly, except I’m using a toilet outside my house and toilet paper is my only option. Yeah you can judge me now.
no, it's ok to use water.
I feel only dirty people use tissues alone. yuck. if you gon use tissues, finish it up with water afterwards.

I love cats and dogs. Always feed stray cats here. One entered my compound one time n my mum was shouting cause I fed it and was petting it.

Mentality is a very big restrictor of naija's growth. Very big in the sense that over 80% have very ridiculous superstitious believes and it transfers into lifestyle. How you raise kids, vote, work ethic, etc.

I can't dare pet a stray dog in naija. The dog 90% has been maltreated just randomly. Some random r3t4rd will just stone the dog for no reason or something. It definitely will attack because it doesn't see humans as friendly.

I was 7 and used walk my uncle's big German shepherd. The dog is only vicious and shows its security side to strangers IN the compound (which stops once it sees family is friendly with the said stranger), and obvious signs of threat outside. They raised it since a pup. Only harsh treatments were for training.

If you only use tissue, I feel you're dirty. Tissue is for drying your butt n seat

Ausbildung in nursing, as far as I know, requires a B2/C1 German language certificate. Some accept B1. But to work after your Ausbildung, you’d definitely need nothing less than B2. If you get accepted into Ausbildung, you’ll get a residence permit known as “permit for the completion of Ausbildung” (in German text). It is usually valid for 2-3 years.

If you drop out of your Ausbildung, your employer will notify the immigration office. Your residence permit will be canceled and you’ll be given a Duldung which is valid for 6 months. You have to find another Ausbildung within those 6 months or leave Germany.

During your Ausbildung as a nurse, you’ll get paid about €1000 a month. Some states pay €1,200. After completing your Ausbildung, you are qualified to work in full employment. In the case of “automatic employment”, that would depend on your employer.
After completing your Ausbildung, you will be granted 12 months to find a job.

But as a nurse, you’ll definitely find a job in a hospital. Qualified nurses make €2,500 and above, a month. When you find a job, you will be granted a residence permit valid for 2 years. Your life begins from there...

PS: For those of you who would ask about Ausbildung in other professions, everything I stated, applies to you as well (except the salary).
Good day,pls what type of visa is issued for Ausbildung?is it study visa ?thank you

Working hours and vacation

Full time work is 8 hours and in some companies and positions, 9 hours a day. Some companies have different shifts. It can be 9am - 5pm, 6am - 2pm, or 2pm - 10pm. You will be asked which one is convenient for you, and you would have to switch from time to time. Most companies stick to 9-5.

For most stressful, unskilled jobs you're required to take a 1 hour break if you work up to 8 hours a day. That one hour is not paid for and you must take that break. It's in German law. So if you start work at 8am and end at 4pm you've actually worked 7 hours and not 8. To work 8 hours, you have to spend 9 hours. First time I learned this I was pissed grin but the law is the law.

If you can get a loan, go for it. Just make sure that you’re provided enough time to pay it back. You can definitely make enough money to pay it back, even while studying. Even if you cannot pay all of it until you get a full time job.

If you stay in student housing which is cheaper, use prepaid phone plan, and don’t get into unnecessary contracts, you can definitely save good money from your student job. There are Nigerian students who became millionaires (in naira), within their first year of study.
This is what I mean by going to a top country vs going to a low budget country. In a top country like Germany, you can make and save money.

Yes, companies are supposed to give priority to German and EU citizens but that’s not always the case. You can get a job if you’re qualified for it, as a non-EU citizen. You stand a better chance if you speak German.

There are graduates making big salaries in Germany. I know a Nigerian guy who studied in UK and works for PayPal in Berlin. His salary is €4,500 a month. His monthly expenses are about €1000 and he can save €3,500.
There are people who make more than that. Some of them are as young as 23 and 25 years old. My close friend is 26 and he makes €8,000 a month, after tax. He’s an entertainment lawyer. He does not know what to do with money. He always says he does not want to live long. He has a list of places he wants to visit, then he plans to donate his money to charity and die.

About moving back to Nigeria to live a good life, it depends on what “good life” means to you. If you have a loan to pay back, don’t expect to have enough money left for that “good life”.
Wow! You’re amazing!!!!
Thank you very much for this analysis.
My final question is how much do you think is reasonable enough to collect, bearing in mind that I’ll be paying back. I just need to know how much will be enough to get settled before I start earning too. I don’t want to be too deep inside debt

The feminists are another group of people you will find in Berlin. Men and women are feminists and they take it very seriously. You have to be careful what you say and how you say it. Any word that comes out of your mouth can be considered offensive to womanhood and the feminists will not waste any time to put you in the right place.

One day I was sitting in the train from work and a girl was standing. She had a big stomach and I even thought she was pregnant. The train was so full and all the seats were occupied. A guy tried to be a gentleman and gave up his seat for this lady to sit down. All hell broke loose and the train turned into a war zone.

The lady disgraced him and dragged his ancestors from the grave, for giving up his seat for her. She said he assumed she was weak because she’s a woman and she does not need any man to tell her what to do. She has legs and she can stand like everyone else.

So yeah, don’t give up your seat for a woman here and don’t even open the door for her to say “Ladies first”. She’d tell you she can open her own door and even curse you out. Also don’t give hugs unless they reach out to hug you. Don’t you dare say anything about their fashion either.

Some feminists also don’t shave their armpits and pubic hairs. They don’t feel they have to do anything to please a man. It is their body and they can do what they want. So you better be careful when dealing with women here, even at work.
No cat-calling, don’t compliment them, don’t talk about their looks or do any gesture out of being a “gentleman”. Telling your female colleague that she’s beautiful, can be considered sexual harassment.

Hmm, this one weak me.

Pets are fascinating creatures; there's this bond that exist between them and their owners, the one true bond. Some people feel they're one of the few that show you that love. When someone decides to will his/her properties to cats, dogs etc, you can't really blame them
A dog they say, is man's best friend. I feel this statement holds water even with other pets like cats, parrots and what have you. When you lose them at some point, the gloom it comes with is sort of excruciating.
Years back, we had several dogs but I'll never forget three, X, Y and Z
X was the first, a German Shepherd. We bonded and we flowed together. Before going to school, I'd feed him, pat him and bid him farewell. Even when he messed up, I couldn't bring myself to discipline him except my siblings. Even at that, he loved us. I even got injured by the roof of his dog house and the scar is still there.Whenever family members came in, he'd jump on them. The dog became kinda playful and developed this penchant for running out whenever the gate was opened, even when you're there, it struggled to elope. That's how one day it ran out and never came back. Someone probably cornered it and who knows what might have happened. I still see other dogs with the same features and I'd remember poor X. I salute you baba grin

Y was a quiet dog, black female dog. She was always in stealth mode like a predator about to hunt down its prey and quite mischievous. The dog had this cheetah like features that enabled her climb the fence when they weren't barb wires. She'd go out on special hunting especially when she decides not to eat, quite selective I must say. She was later sold.
Then Z, a Terrier dog with proper training. When dogs have good training and are beautiful, you'll be a proud owner.
We travelled to Abj together (4 hrs) to her new abode and she got to know the family. The moment you bring your hand forward, she'll bring hers too to shake you. When she wants to urinate, she goes to the door so that you'll open for her and she does her thing, same with solid waste.
I left her for school, months pass and I returned for break and found out she had died from poisoning. I wasn't aware and no-one told me till I came and asked about her. I leave the wicked soul who did such to man's best friend to God.
Sometimes, you just looked at them, their eyes and try to imagine what they're thinking about, what they wanna tell you, infact wishing they could talk.
I truly understand the situation you were in when the dog left you.

This made me emotional. Nigerians don’t know how to care for dogs. Sometimes it is not intentional food poisoning. I also had to learn that you do not feed a dog everything. There are certain foods that can kill a dog. But you know Nigerians, anything they can’t finish eating, they throw it to a dog.
For example, it is very dangerous to give dogs chocolate. It is also dangerous to feed a dog, chicken with bone. The chicken bone can kill the dog. Other foods like that as well.

If I give a list of low budget countries to avoid in my opinion, Nigerians will turn this thread to a war zone with their arguments. I talked about the terrible living conditions of Africans in Turkey, on another thread, and people came on my neck. If I tell people to avoid certain countries, they will come here to derail the thread with arguments.

Just do your own research. Don’t base your research on Nairaland, it can be deceiving. Nairaland is full of desperate Nigerians, many of whom are in denial and tell lies. They’d rather create a false reality than be brutally honest about their experience in certain countries. You know Nigerians believe every country with a higher currency than naira, is better than Nigeria. Pls read other experiences on google. Also join Facebook groups of countries you’re interested in. Then, you can compare it to Nairaland and weigh your options.

Berlin in pictures.

This is Hermannplatz in the district of Neukölln, in Berlin. This area is ghetto, ghetto, ghetto. It is also very ugly, compared the other areas in Berlin. It is very noisy and busy and also very lively. It is a Turkish/Arab populated area and a cool place to live if you like the busy, noisy lifestyle with lots of shops. I’d say it is the equivalent of Agege and Computer village in Lagos.

It is the Computer village of Berlin, being that you can buy, repair, sell and exchange phones, laptops and all kinds of electronics and video games. They also practices shady business activities like they do in computer village in Lagos. There are lots of scammers and thieves here, so be careful when you bring your stuff for repair. The day I brought my laptop for repair, they stole my motherboard, replaced it with a bad one, stole all the components of my laptop and rendered it useless.

This is also where you find lots of African shops to buy your favorite food and bleaching creams. From Movate, to Dermovate, Carotone, Carowhite, Carolight, Caromama and all the Caros that can turn you to oyibo. It is a hotspot for Africans who like to hang around other Africans to gossip. Every story about everybody, you will hear it here.

I personally think it is a cool area, even though I would not live there. The white people you’ll see there are the low budget hipsters who moved to Berlin with just transport money and their toothbrush. It is quite good for connecting to other areas of Berlin with public transport. It is also a hub for crimes and sexual harassment against women.

Find pictures below.
