The story talks about the Igbo tribe, their Chi( gods) and ancestors.
It talks about a young man called Nonso whose life became something else when he saved a lady from committing suicide on the bridge..

His story is not told by him rather by his Chi (Guardian angel in igbo language). His chi can even negotiate with chukwu (God) on his behalf.. His Chi can't force him to do things but can only suggest things to him through thinking and imagination.

Romance was born and he found himself sacrificing a lot for the love of his life.. The lady is a pharmacist while Nonso is just a poultry farmer.. So much difference between both parties from educational background to Financial Background..
He calls her “Mommy,” the way other men might refer to a lover as “sweetheart” or “darling.” “Every good woman is my mommy,” he says.

He was scammed when he was trying to get into the white man's land (Cyprus) to be precise. His childhood friend called Jamike deceived him and took all his hard earned money.. His nightmare began..

He was arrested in Cyprus for crime he didn't commit and he spent four years in prison before the truth became unveiled..

He couldn't get married to the woman of his dreams because it was too late when he came back to Nigeria..

This is not a love story but a story of rage, Class,Hustle..

-The ones who can't stand and fight not because they're weak but because the spirit of fear is In them.
- those who risk everything in order to better their lives and forge ahead.

If you're expecting something like "Happily ever after", I am sorry to say that this book isn't for you because it ended sadly...

All the same,it is one of those books that you will want to read over and over again.

Chigozie obioma writes well. He described the Igbo cosmology very well and I will say "He is indeed a talented writer"..

This is different from any book I've read. The concept was crazy. It shows that the imagination of the author really ran wild. From the existence of a person's 'chi', which is actually different from a person's conscience, then to the Protagonist's Chi (Nonso's Chi) telling the story... I was wowed.

I don't think there's any chapter you'll read without seeing proverbs, wise sayings and many more. At some point, I started wondering how the author came about all of the proverbs, did they already exist or were they just figments of his imagination?

The story takes us on a journey through the life of Nonso. Childhood experiences, his present experiences and a lot more. It takes us on a ride through Nonso's quest to marry the one he loves. We get to see the sacrifices he made just to end up "in a happily ever after" with the love of his life. We get to hope that he would indeed achieve such, and that kept us reading till the very end.

I keyed into the part where Nonso's Chi was talking about how he couldn't understand why water that is like abundant back then is now something that is being sold. It's a freaking gift of nature, why is it sold now?

Another part I also admire is the part he talked about civilization. He said, "The civilisation of the fathers was hinged on the preservation of that which already existed, not on the discovery of new things” and he went further to say, “The old fathers looked to the past to move forward. They relied not on what they could see but on what their fathers had seen”

It is a lovely novel but unlike Gem baby, I don't think it's one I'd love to read again. My reasons are;

It's really long
I'm not sure I understand the end
I craved so much for the end, that I almost got tired of craving.

In all, it was a lovely read and I would recommend this to everyone to read.

The story is about nonso, a poultry farmer whose life took a turn for the worse when he fell in love with Ndali, a woman he saved from jumping off a bridge. His quest to be accepted by Ndali's educated and high-class family led him to sell all his properties to attend University in cyprus. But when he arrives in cyprus he found out he was scammed by his friend who made the arrangements for him. Everything just went downhill from there.
The story is narrated by nonso's chi/guardian spirit who has come to plead for his host before the Igbo god, chukwu.

It wasn't an easy read for me. There's just way to many proverbs that I thought I was reading a book of igbo proverbs. And the build-up to the story is very slow, a lot of unnecessary digressions. But, All in all the book is very educative. I learned a lot 'bout Igbo cosmology. The writer really did his research.

A two star rating from me. And I won't recommend this book to anyone.

I've not read a lot of African novels, the truth is that I can count them on one hand but I must say this one was very different. It contained a lot of proverbs and wise sayings that I have to be pausing, highlighting and do a deep thinking in almost every page. It was as if I was reading a book of wisdom.

I likes the way the writer mixed the Igbo language and English as if they are one. He did not try to explain anything, so nice.

The various names he gave to Chukwu in which I cannot remember most again was also a delight as I struggle to pronounce each of them before realizing I've heard them before.

Some obvious weak point of the book is that the Chi digresses a lot in his narration. If I was Chukwu, I would have asked it (him) to get to the point. This made the book rather too long and the only thing that kept me reading was my curiosity.

Also Jamike dumping Nonso was predictable probably because I've watched too many Nollywood movies and the country "Cyprus" made it easy for me.

Overall, it was a nice read but not something I'll like to read again any time soon. I'll totally recommend it to others.
