For rail, I would do Lagos Kano 3X over Lagos Calabar.

From Kano, you can harmonise Agric produce and even process them and forward them to Lagos for export. They earns the country money and boosts our economy.
From the Calabar route however, movement there is import oriented. you majorly import and move to that axis without exporting anything.

Instead of rail, let the ports in Calabar be put in place to handle larger volumes of cargo and then divert those cargoes to that port.

If not for the low value of the naira, Nigerians won't be chasing exports..... western countries are not exporting to Nigeria because their currency has value.

What is the land size of these places? When you check it out, you will see that your analysis is terribly flawed. Let me help you with some. Imagine if the population of Lagos is halved or even divided into 4.

Julius Berger is Technically a Nigerian company. Almost 70percent of their shares is owned by Nigerians. 95percent of their workforce is made of Nigerians.

Thr cars Japan produces, doesn't it export them? Don't their currency have value?

Japan doesn't have a single tree of rubber, yet they make cars. 100% of the rubber used in manufacturing in Japan are imported. Demand.
Isreal imports majority of the fruits it eats. This is due to their soul type. Demand.
France, Germany and the UK import billions of dollars worth of cocoa every year for beverages. Demand.

Nigeria is not an industrialised nation yet. The easiest way out is to use increased exports to get the necessary resources for industrialisation.

It's because the whole 200 million Nigerians cannot refine steel and make rods. So we have to import everything to make anything in this country.

That's a big lie. Nigeria iron bars are the best for reinforced concrete construction followed by Ukraine Steel. I know a dealer in those iron bars

It's a no brainer, Lagos-kano definitely.
Rail is primarily for transporting cargo; passenger transportation is secondary.
What sense does it make to transport cargo via rail from one coastal city to another when seaports in the other coastal cities can easily solve that? That's why the British built the Lagos-kano and PH-Maiduguri narrow gauge rail lines to link the seaports to the hinterlands, and not Lagos-Calabar which should come after linking the hinterlands first.

This can only be a topic in a failed country like Nigeria where seaports in Warri, PH and Calabar don't function due to various stupid reasons.

Thanks for your response.
If what you said is acceptable about cargos beingn a priority,do you think it would still have been more logical reconstructing Lagos-kano from old gauge to standard gauge while leaving the lagos- Calabar which has no existing old nor new line(not forgetting the fact that old gauge is still mainly still usable for Cargo and standard is for passengers train because of speed??),will it not be better leaving the old one for kano to operate and start a construction of of coastal aLagos-calabar one(putting in mind that the SE and SS ports were intentionally made to only encourage oil and agro exports and not import?

Lagos-Calabar. better business opportunity in the south region that in North.

Two friends of mine one from SE and the other from North central brought an argument to me recently and i decided to throw it open to a wider intelligent audience about Lagos-kano and Lago_calabar rail line so i can arrive at my answer. When looking at the following factors:Economic,Financial,Tourism , Historical ,Administrative and social-cultural benefit accrued to the execution of these projects and the present factor at play of one already having an old gauge.

There is paucity of fund to face Both at a go,you can only execute one at a time ,which do you think should be executed first between Lagos-kano and Lagos-calabar route.
Let's put ourselves in our leaders shoes this time, imagine you are a a project engineer and also and project accountant at the same time.
Kindly explain reasons for your answers

No matter how many good infrastructure Lagos puts up, they will quickly deteriorate under the weight of overpopulation.

The FG should work towards creating more commercial cities so that people can have options to go those places to trade or work. That's how economies grow!

Is FG that will create cities right? And some 33 people thinking alike like your post. In Nigeria we don't really know the function of the three arms of government

All the imports the East do, how much does it add to Nigeria's economy?
The Agric exports the North does, how much does it add to the economy?
That is the first thing to ask.

The North needs a rail line to facilitate exports so that Nigeria and Nigerians make more money.

The East needs a seaport closer home to facilitate imports. A seaport closer would also decongest Lagos.

Hmmm,thank for your response
But kindly tell me which of the two Lagos-calabar(A) and Lagos-Kano(B)
Does the following most
(1)move Agric produce for export and metallurgical materials
(2) moves tourist and travellers
(3) move agric produce for internal consumption
(4) locally produced goods(wears, processed material like oil and gas related and consumers goods)
(5)moves imported equipment,machines,wears ,chemicals,wears abd foods.

Thank you my brother, Lagos is a actually A very beautiful place to be but the population is killing it. the population is making it look worse. imagine if Lagos had the same population with the likes of Accra the roads will be perfectly ok,the city will look very organized and very neat.. FG should also invest more on other states for example ogun state TBH if FG can invest more on that state it will easily meet up with lagos and the likes of oyo state, rivers and akwa ibom state FG should invest more on them

Tell us what FG should invest on. And also tell us the role of the state government in the state.

What is the the role of the three arms of government?

Everything can not be FG. That is why when your governor's are not performing you point accusing fingers to the federal

The narrow gauge built by the British was poorly maintained by Nigerian government and left in a state of disrepair, hence the standard gauge railway modernisation plan by the FG for the two South-North rail lines.
I read a detailed coverage of a Lagos-Kano rail trip many years ago by a Premium Times journalist, a horrible trip that took about a week to complete.
Clearly, cargo transporters prefer using the roads which is way faster than the narrow gauge route.

i think Lagos-Kano first cause you're linking two different regions together, plus Kano has many industries which would need the railway line for safer transporting of these goods

Let's all learn

Moves Agric produce for export and metallurgical materials. - Kano route.

Tourists and travellers - Calabar route

Move agric produce for internal consumption - Kano route. Lagos alone alone consumes more cattle daily than the entire Nigeria. The initial 2 weeks lockdown in Lagos affected farmers all over Nigeria.

Locally produced goods(wears, processed material like oil and gas related and consumers goods).
Kano. Most of the tankers you see in Lagos are taking oil to the far north.

(5)moves imported equipment,machines,wears ,chemicals,wears abd foods.
Kano.

You know why I'm choosing Kano over Calabar? There are seaports for the SE to use but Kano doesn't have a seaport for importation. Let those who want to ship to Lagos and move by rail to the SE use Calabar port instead.

The governments of those States have foolishly failed to provide infrastructure ancillary to the operations of the ports, e.g. roads.

Try to study TINAPA. It gives an idea of what I'm talking about.
