I can't help to picture if he has done otherwise. How it will look and sound. What message the scene will send. It is hard to put boys on their toes if you are not there.

Warriors die standing! Not on their knees much less running. I believe that really counted against him at the end of the day. That was really unfair on the soldiers that he sent to the war. Much respect to him though.

Everyone who risks his life in a fight will always be on his/her toes. The cranks you would get from the boys is due to lack of motivation. They are not sure how their family will fare in the event of their death.
They also have ranking leaders that would be in a better position to put them on their toes

That's the thing, in Borno's case the death of the governor would mean nothing cause the insurgency is at its peak.

Now that was a strategic move because, it was like their last blow to remove BH from chad (at least that's what they think) after the operation, Nigerian hostages were released, a lot of other significant activities took place. It made sense for the president to be there. They were sure the fight was close to won. That's not the case in Nigeria.
