There are two categories of staff in the banking industry.
1.Core Staff
2.Contract Staff.

As a core staff,you work less and get a huge sum of salary Monthly,you are majorly a supervisor. you have access to a lot of benefits: car loans,good health care,bonuses,yearly up front,relocation allowances,promotions and alot of them.
As a contract staff, no promotion, no benefits like bonus,up front.
You work like robots with little pay..


So your position in the banking industry says a whole lot about your experience in the industry.

You definitely have good Knowledge and skills in banking and finance + accounting... If you really wanna cross your carrer level to tech... You best Bet is Data analyst or Datat Science... You will really do great and I'm sure your experience will speed up things for you in life...

A teller is not a “banker”, tellers are most times contract staff, they don’t know anything more than posting/receiving cash, sorting cash or anything cash- something interns can do. So, it is only normal they feel extremely used after years of counting cash they may not own. Nobody is going to employ you after years just because you can count cash and identify fake notes on sight.

Many of them move to fintechs in Nigeria , the test of Africa and beyond. Cashier position can be done by a high school leaver and I wonder what kept you there for 10 years

I think you should run a business that can sustain you for now while learning copy writing, and apply it wherever it will be lucrative for you. The way you titled your story made me want to know more, if you cultivate the potential, I believe you would do well, programming pays but requires a high mental dedication and you don't have much time right now.

Becareful otherwise u're gonna crash and burn..don't be over zealous over what to invest ur money into plus the Nigerian economy is really tight right now..take things slowly..don't rush them..

The moment I entered I realized all these was a scam. Those suits you see are being paid for, installmentally for 3months. The phones in 6 months etc Bankers are one of the least paid professions today considering the amount of time they put Into thier work (7am to even 10pm) and the level of risk they are subjected to. The sad thing about working for a Nigerian bank is once u leave, u realize that you can't use the skill elsewhere. You are technically back to square one.

This is my case. I spent the last decade of my life working in a financial institution as a teller. Quite wastful considering the fact that I know nothing other than counting money for customers. I worked for 7days in a week. 10yrs passed In a flash. No time to even get additional qualifications.

Before joining, my friends adviced me against it, but coming from a humble background the need to get independent fast was more appealing. Why I stayed so long is a topic for another day (have you heard of employment fraud) anyway,
I left last week and I can say I am happy I finally got a chance and time to learn any new trending knowledge and I am prepared to start afresh. I will be 35 this year. With a background in construction mgt I thought of copywritting, digital marketing etc but I love to learn technical stuff.. Pls advise if any. I know IT related careers will sell here and abroad.

I've thought of programming, cloud tech, data tech etc.

Please I need your advice, which path should I follow now that at the age of 40 I will regain all the time I lost in the banking field.

I can get an MSc but I want a high income paying skill that the likes of the oil majors wouldn't mind employing even at my age or if I am to be self employed I can be distinctive in that area.

YOU ARE STILL HAVING A JOB SEEKER MENTALITY? BE UR OWN BOSS MAN. GET D SKILLS YOU BADLY NEED TO BE INDEPENDENT.

You are wrong about banking not being a good career choice, people have left banking to do other jobs ask accountants, lawyers, surveyors and the rest. You were not properly guided when you started.
A bank teller is not a career an SSCE holder will do what any bank teller is doing after 6 months training.

You dont spend 10years doing teller work, you ought to have been promoted to something better like head of operations, but that was back when banking was banking.

Your statement is akin to saying joining the army is not profitable ( this would apply if one joined as a recruit and not an officer)

I advice you move one with your life, take time to find what you re passionate about and do it before the sun sets on your life

Better late than never. The banking sector is a great place to learn especially if you have passion for entrepreneurship.

Why not leverage on your experience. Register a company and think of a financial service you can register. Consider the following

1.You can syndicate little loans to federal civil servants at a moderate interest rate. Compel them to give you standing instructions on their salary account which you can execute via remita platform.

2.Open and operate POS or mobile money shop
3. Start a company that can handle address verification for banks.
4.Start a finance blog
5.Start a loan recovery agency
6. Team up with a law firm and help customers review their bank statement with a view to helping them recover excess bank charges
6.Register a company and use your contact from the bank to hustle for contract.
7.Partner with a licensed BDC and trade FX or trade USD the mallam way

OP, In my opinion I suggest you come on board in cloud tech .

This is next generation oil well in terms of IT. Come to think of it, it deals with most of these aforementioned areas like programming; networking, securities etc

Cloud Tech gives you footage to dive into SAAS (Software as a service) or IAAS (Infrastructure as a service)

Equip yourself with cloud Tech, soon you will be identified by the giant coys like AWS, Google, Oracle, Microsoft, etc.

To clear you well, cloud tech guys are reaping it big esp at this period of covid 19. So many IT coys migrated if not all their services to cloud.

These paved way for availability of jobs. Funny enough, the job is wide world. They can pick you up from anywhere. BOOM! You fly.

Note: you must sure demonstrate the needed skill.

Good you are now following your passion. Is it that you spent 10years as a TELLER without promotion or reassignment to other units in the bank?

One mistake I think you did was not going for professional course, even if you don't use it while in active service of the bank, you will definitely need it elsewhere.

About the phone and suit, it is just funny mhen..

If you have enough capital, just go into business or trade., At this time you wouldn't want to settle for a graduate trainee job in your own carrier job.

Except you are working in the finance department with an accounting degree, if not, it has the tendency to make you static. Someone said studying banking is a scam because you don't need to study banking and finance to understand banking and work there.

You can see a French graduate, Yoruba Literature grad working in a bank after undergoing training.

But anyway, the thing about working in the bank is that you are almost useless when you want to change industries. You only have skills that you can use in the bank except you specialize like working in HR, Finance department, etc. That is why most bankers move from bank to bank because their skills are limited.

Can you pay your self as a teller ? If some one sit in a place for 9 years and a fresh graduate can learn in 1 week. They are already doing u a favour by keeping u in the system.

Why will u be a teller for 10 years.

You used plenty banking application and u cnt graduate to be a support person in IT at the minimum. You did not acquire any skill to differentiate urself.

I have see a corper move from entry to Assistant Manager within the same 10 years in a useless bank self.

How do u feel when an IT student come and u are able to explain all u do in 9 years in less than 1 week.

You are the cause of Ur problem stop blaming banks.

I have seen Tellers become very useful resources in IT.

I have seen tellers give ideas that led to change in Role.
