life bo be competition, yes some set at 40 but others start at 40..have you heard about the KFC founder?.... Life no balance

Dont compare starting a business at 40 to programming @ 40. Dem no be the same. His focus at that age is which business he can start. If his business focus is on programming then he can hire as many programmers he wants.

Hi all, moderator pls help me push to fp. I need good advise like badly.

I joined the banking system about a decade ago. Young and naive. I got carried away by thier flashy suits and top tech phones.
The moment I entered I realized all these was a scam. Those suits you see are being paid for, installmentally for 3months. The phones in 6 months etc Bankers are one of the least paid professions today considering the amount of time they put Into thier work (7am to even 10pm) and the level of risk they are subjected to. The sad thing about working for a Nigerian bank is once u leave, u realize that you can't use the skill elsewhere. You are technically back to square one.

This is my case. I spent the last decade of my life working in a financial institution as a teller. Quite wastful considering the fact that I know nothing other than counting money for customers. I worked for 7days in a week. 10yrs passed In a flash. No time to even get additional qualifications.

Before joining, my friends adviced me against it, but coming from a humble background the need to get independent fast was more appealing. Why I stayed so long is a topic for another day (have you heard of employment fraud) anyway,
I left last week and I can say I am happy I finally got a chance and time to learn any new trending knowledge and I am prepared to start afresh. I will be 35 this year. With a background in construction mgt I thought of copywritting, digital marketing etc but I love to learn technical stuff.. Pls advise if any. I know IT related careers will sell here and abroad.

I've thought of programming, cloud tech, data tech etc.

Please I need your advice, which path should I follow now that at the age of 40 I will regain all the time I lost in the banking field.

I can get an MSc but I want a high income paying skill that the likes of the oil majors wouldn't mind employing even at my age or if I am to be self employed I can be distinctive in that area.

Niaralanders, pls help a brother

Some people here are urging him on. I am not discouraging anybody but for somebody at that age and being a family man it is better he find another job or start a business then he can then study programming a side hustle.

But programming as the main hustle no dey easy o. I am talking from experience.

@35 to 40, programming is not a good idea he should turn all his experiences to business. I thought bankers has easy access to loan..why him no collect 2m put am for MBA. Payback by 6months and resign.

Oga I understand but permit mecto say you were mentally lazy. I worked in the bank and in 4years I moved from teller to E-channels because i went out of my way to send mails to the head of department profering solutions.

Alot of peoplw like you go to the bank becsuse you see the flashy suits like you rightly said, even in heaven you must work and worship God forget the gold.

Today i work else where and im using my skills and ideas to grow where I am and im happy for it.

As a teller I was going to school running a second degree in ICT, i met alot of people there who were too relaxed on the salary.

Wake up, your branch has problems start solving them and you will see your mind come alive again to do great things.

Unfortunately, I am one those that bank job almost ruined their life/discipline. I studied computer science and engineering and was very good in C, C++, qbasic programming language as the time I left school. My final year project topic was on website design, which I beautifuly executed. However, I got appointment as an executive assistant with one of the high paying Nigerian banks as at time, but little did I know I was heading to doom till I was coerced to resign because dwindling economy.

Today I am seriously learning programming from almost the scratch because, neither C, C++ nor Qbasic is a recognized language in programming in today's world. Things have changed, but I did not change with it.

For those who may still ask, CAN I TAKE A BSNK JOB?. The answer is neither YES nor NO. It all depends on the individual. Remember, some people studied accounting, banking, marketing or all those banking related discipline, so if they don't work in bank, where else would they work. So to these types, bank job could be their heaven.

My interest is on those guys that studied Engineering, Law, science courses etc. If the bank emoploys you as ordinary teller, cashier, funds transfer, marketer and you did not study bank related discipline, just be aware you are heading to doom.

If you know the rate of unemployment in this country, you'll not offer this advise.
There are graduates who have been at home for over 4years despite their good grades, yet nothing is forthcoming. If you see the thousands of applications some of these banks receive for their contract jobs, you'll be shocked.
People with good degrees in chemical, Marine, & mechanical engineering takes up contract jobs in oil & gas industries too.
I don't know what the fuss about Bank jobs are :Wema bank wey be old generation bank dey pay their confirmed executive assistant over 2.3million naira annually regardless of the department you are in (Marketing/ Branch Operations/product management/Financial performance/Tax & Audit/ Credit/Media&Publicity/IT) etc.
You guys should stop badmouthing bank jobs.

I will never understand that part. The other one is “bankers are useless outside the bank”.

Is a doctor useful outside the hospital? Or is a lawyer useful outside legal duties? Except they work in a designated unit in another sector. This is where some “bankers“ have an edge. Why would anyone be useful outside the bank because they can count money or fill account opening forms?

Someone said a HR is not a “banker“, but a HR can have opportunities to function in HR units across sectors. Same way a core staff can jump from one bank to another. The ones with meaningful experience or skills enter some private organizations to assume supervisory roles. Ex-bankers should stop demonizing the industry that gave majority of them hope and money to buy their first set of good-looking clothes and cars.grin

God bless you left and right.

Aws is selling. But naija doesn't really have much of these opportunities as developed countries.
