My Trip To Kainji Lake National Park And Kainji Dam by Dpsychologist(op): 12:16am On Aug 07, 2020
After my Trip to Federal College Of Wildlife Management for my research. See thread HERE
I went back to lodge in the hotel to jot down my result and freshen up.
The next day i visited the Kainji Lake National Park and the Kainji hydroelectric power plant.

My Trip to Kainji Lake National Park
Kainji Lake National Park (KLNP) was the first National Park to be established among the eight that are currently present in Nigeria. The Park covers an area of 5,340.82 square km and is comprised of two sectors, Borgu and Zugurma, in Niger State.
The establishment of KLNP in 1976 marked the first attempt at managing wildlife for recreation in Nigeria. KLNP harbours diverse flora, fauna, hydrological, cultural and human resources.

The Park houses a lot of wildlife like: elephants, lions, buffaloes, antelope, hunting dogs, hippos, monkey, lion, python, Nile crocodile, leopard, hyena, buffalo, kob, cobra, green snake, bush buck, tilapia, mongoose, stone partridge, hadada ibis, Bee eaters, turtles, manatees, baboons, pringhorn antelopes, crocodile and so many others.

In addition, approximately 180 species of birds have been recorded to be housed by the park.
Lloyd
In the park, there are noticeable warning sign that states “No hunting in the park”This inscription is to inform visitors of the dangers the wildlife is exposed to by poaching activities of local hunters in the region. At Kainji Lake, there is also a “No fishing policy” and “No littering policy”.

In Kainji Lake National Park some of the animals are allowed to roam about such as the Ostrich unlike some like the baboon

Wildlife Museum
In the museum, skins of wild animals are on display(these skins are from animal that either died of natural causes or killed by poachers) such as skin of a big python that stretches from the floor to the ceiling of the building, a huge glutted crocodile, a big egg of an ostrich, snakes and large spiders.

My Tour to Kainji Hydropower station
After i was done with the Kainji Lake National Park i decided to go on a tour to Kainji dam. As i was about to enter i was told i cannot enter until i was given a permit. I was directed to the administrative office which was a little bit far. After obtain permission i was allowed to enter.

Even at that i was given laid down rules including no snapping, but i manouver to snap some pics

Re: My Trip To Kainji Lake National Park And Kainji Dam by Dpsychologist(op):
I was given a brief lecture about the Kainji hydroelectric power plant. This was what i was able to jot down:

Kainji dam is the largest dam on the river Niger – the third

longest river in Africa and the principal river in western Africa. Kainji Dam is a 7.2km long gravity dam on the River Niger. Kainji dam is located in Borgu LGA of Niger State.

The dam's hydroelectric plant was designed to have a generating capacity of 960MW. Its eventual capacity was lower as only 8 of the planned 12 turbines were installed. The plant currently has a capacity of 760MW. I kept wondering how comes in 2020 there are still only 8 active turbines.

Kainji Lake – the largest ( 1,300km²) man-made lake in Nigeria – was created when the dam was built. It provides water for irrigation and fishing, an important industry in the area.

P. S

The employees there do no allow snapping i wonder why.
They specifically told me not to snap inside and only permit me to snap the outside, maybe its for security reasons

Contrary to popular belief it is not the water that directly produces Electricity.

Electricity is produced by a device called a turbine. Turbines contain metal coils surrounded by magnets. When the magnets spin over the metal coils, electricity is produced. Turbines are located inside dams. The falling water spins the magnets.

Thus, the water only spin the turbines which in turn generates electricity.

Wildlife has truly suffered in Nigeria. sad Look at those poor animals.

Memories! I was at Kainji, Shirororo dam, and Gurara falls about 15 years ago. They were great sights to behold especially Gurara falls.

From the images looks like not much has changed. sad sad

Is there a good hotel close to the park and dam for tourists? In your estimation, how safe is Niger state and the area for a non native tourist? Are there flights into the state? I'm asking as a prospective visitor to kainji.

I think irrigation via the dam should boost agric activities in that area, pls confirm.

You don't want to let a baboon go roaming freely. smiley

I have had the rare privilege of seeing that creature upclose(the one I saw was restrained by a chain around the waist region) and to be honest, it can be highly unpredictable.

This is very true about hydropower. The water only serves to spin the turbine and nothing more.

The closest hotel to the park and dam is hydrohotel.

As of when i went there, i didn't Encounter any terrorist attack, or insurgency it is quite safe. I think they have more steady light than other places i have been to.

For irrigation yea there are alot of farm activities going on but the little problem is that when there is overflow of water it tends to flood the farms and other area within the locality. Although not always.

don't mind the idiot, he has no idea about the place. Kanji national park has two places; their office and the park itself( mind you it's located in two different regions, I mean long distance apart. Also the dam is located at another region different from the other two. Niger state is Damn big.

No flight except you charter a jet, they have an air force base for landing.

man, the dam and park can not be covered in a day, they are two different distance apart. I mean very far apart. The dam was formerly owned by nepa and due to the dam, school and hospital were built for the workers, I had the privilege of attending the school. I literally lived my whole life there. Stop talking nonsense.

And you didn't mention about the parks having two different locations.

Don't play with me bro. Bloody liar
