Gospel music has been relegated from our airwaves, not even Sundays anymore like it used to be, the fact is that many artiste came out from the church and they are fond of repeating what their pastors said, Japp is by far the only person doing something different with his StreetlyGospel style of music, a kind of music relevant within and outside church settings.

You're so correct but I guess you've not heard about JappOfficial, he does StreetlyGospel, just google StreetlyGospel by Japp, he has an EP.

Missionaire:
No Christian artist has ever awaken the people to societal challenges than secular artists.

Our gospel artists would rather sing motivational songs and songs about heaven than sing about the corruption and other challenges in our country like Eedris, 2Baba, Burna Boy etc.
Some Christians would say that romantic songs are bad and I believe this is why romance dies in most Christian homes after the first 15 years of marriage. Even the church rarely preach from Songs of Solomon.
We forget that man is a tripartite being that consists of the Spirit, Soul and body.
So when you as a Christian are in the mood with your wife to be romantic instead of being just sexual like land grabbers, you would rather play Nathaniel Bassey instead of West Life or Ed Sheeran?
Na only to make babies many Christian couples know.
The Christians who printed the Bible and left Songs of Solomon were not foolish. Christians must learn to balance spirituality, romance and social activism.

Spiritual songs are for the spirit. Romantic songs are for the soul and good social and conscience reawakening songs are good for the body because na the body dy suffer the hardships for this country.

New generation Christians are becoming the next extremists.

That's great and awesome.
Now, how many Christians will agree that street gospel or any gospel rap is a good gospel song?

Good music is good music no matter the genre it falls under.

I fear for the future... This is how it starts.

The next set of religious extremists might just be the so-called Nairaland "christians" after all.

The sort of things I hear them say here are cringe-worthy.

Let's face it, something is not right. I know many of you will not agree with me but hey... you don't know what I have seen and read here so you won't understand.

These things often start out as harmless jokes and then balloon into something else before you know it. It might take years but we are gradually getting there.

I have studied the origins of several radical religious groups to know.
What are you trying to say?

The Spirit of God inspires it all...even what you call secular music. He is in only Spirit of Inspiration and He inspires the use of all knowledge for any and every purpose out there.

Lies! The devils influence/encourage every ungodly thing. No secular music is inspired by the Spirit of God, and they are not to the glory of God neither are they spiritually edifying. Some people have used their talents to produce rubbish. They will account for it on judgement day.

2 John 1:7 For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.

1 John 4:1-6 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.
We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

Romans 16:18 For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.

Matthew 12:36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

Romans 14:19 Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.

Romans 14:11-12 For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.
So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

1 Corinthians 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

The songs don't confess Jesus, the words/lyrics don't edify (some very idle/profane), and they are not to the glory of God. These are a few places God has told me. Where did God tell you your own?

dont inject your own meanings int what Jesus Christ said. Please go back through and tell us where God commanded that you stay away from music and movies if the secular kind.

By the way, the world that hated Jesus Christ, was not the world of sinners but the world that was instead filled with Pharisees, Sadducees, Rabbis, Teachers of the Law, MOGs, Prophets, Spirtual fathers, Priests and High Priests.. That was the world that hated Jesus Christ. That was the same world Jesus Christ warned His followers to stay away from.

Wonder what world today that closely resembles?

The same world even this present one that is worse, you are frolicking with.

1 John 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

People are just trying to give excuses for carnal entertainment but these things have no place in the kingdom of heaven. They are properties of the broad way not the narrow way to heaven. And for a Christian, as Jesus told us, our kingdom is not of this world. There are far better things in store in God's kingdom for His people.

The world that hated Jesus Christ was the world within their temples and synagogues I.e. your Churches and Cathedrals are the world that resemble those closest.

Stop believing the lies that MOGs tell you about those they love to look down on. Jesus Christ Said He and He alone ought to be your only teachers, but MOGs and others have set themselves up in His place to teach lies and wickedness in His name. That is mainly the reason why you think the danger is out there not realizing it is inside of those churches that they lie to you is the house of God.

If you have received a new heart from God and allowed your mind to be renewed by the Word of God (Romans 12:1, 2), you will come to know that these things are dross. Christ's kingdom is not of this world.

O yes

But is this supposed to be a question

Any music you can't sing in church, don't listen to it

It is called 'worldly song'

Christ warned His followers not to be friends with the world

We have worldliness in:
Dressing
Music
Language
Lifestyle etc

Bottom line: anything that doesn't bring glory to God Almighty is worldly

You think say following God na beans
You must deny yourself those sweet sweet things that tickles your fancy

Serving God is sweet when you are ready to surrender all. Christ told the rich man to go sell off all he has...what do you have
Is it ego, pride, beauty, money, etc.

The greatest deception on earth today is that everyone has been religionized. You cannot different who is serving the devil now unlike before. Nowadays, almost everyone goes to church but they are not ready to serve God.

I week for this adulterous and wicked generation

A Pharisee like you who is a hypocrite.
Yes, Christ came for you in order to let you know that righteousness and unrighteousness have nothing in common. Light and darkness have nothing in common.

If you are really born again by the incorruptible seed of Christ, you cannot say such a thing. No wonder Christ Jesus said, by their fruit, you shall know them.

Are you telling me that if Christ were to be on earth today, He would be listening to David, WizKid, 2PAC, etc songs

I weep for this generation...

You are one of those who are born again by head knowledge. The Word of God is yet to penetrate your heart in order to affect your soul

Cry for help before it's too late...

Well, I will say there are secular songs that teaches moral and are very decent. Let me give you few example, mike okri " time na money" faze "perfect woman" Onyeka owenu " one love. Are these songs not secular songs? We have so many love songs and other moral songs.what you shouldn't listen to as a Christian are songs that have profane words and corrupt words that's teaches violence, promotion sexual drives and encourages wrongs ways of making money. Let's be wise.

Yesterday i got into a heated debate with an acquaintance. He was of the opinion that listening to secular music and movies is bad for a christian. I on the other hand was countering him. Although i know that there are music or movies especially that one should avoid but i opine that it is not enough to ride all secular music and movies off.

I have learn alot especially from secular movies both as a form of entertainment and educationally and just because some movies are bad doesn’t mean i should stop watching movies.

As for the music aspect, although i listen to alot of gospel but i also listen to secular from time to time. I told the guy that what about Tasha Cobbs a gospel singer who featured Nicki Minaj in "I'm getting ready" or Jeremiah Gyang featuring M.I. in "Kaunar Na Allah". The songs are great and are still gospel.

The guy argued that they have backslided. They should never associate themselves with secular musicians.

We argued for like an hour until we get tired.

So i will like see your own point of view. Is listening to secular music/movie bad for a Christian?
Music is Spiritual, and Christianity is a spiritual walk, world music does not glorify the spirit, so its spiritually healthy to listen to Spirit edifying music

Listening to secular music is not a sin but it's not the best for someone who wants to grow. You'll not understand this except you're deliberately making efforts to grow in Christ. We need to understand that everything we do in this life either strengthens the flesh or the spirit.Whatever you do that doesn't strengthen your spirit strengthens your flesh. When your flesh overpowers your spirit, you'll find it difficult to please God,even if it is your desire.Besides, many of these artistes sell their souls to the devil to become famous and there's a negative influence on those songs whether they have good wholesome lyrics or not.If you're still arguing whether secular music is wrong or not,it's most likely that you've not started to know Jesus on a one-on-one basis or even if you have, you're not willing to drop it even though you know it's impeding your spiritual progress. The mind is the battlefield.Be wise about what you fill it with.

Let's establish facts:
Even your friend who seems to debate against a Christian listening to secular music or watching secular movies, might be hypocritical doing that in a secret corner of His room.

Do what makes you happy, sing whatever typpa song, that's why we have Genres of Music. Music entertaines, educates and also informs. It's a work of art.

Most so called "Nigerian Christians" are way too "religious" and can't bridle their tongue, they'd rather not work on themselves but on others.

The whole duty of man is to FEAR GOD && Keep His commands (without talking/judging people).

Music is music. There is nothing like Christian or Gospel and secular music all we have is good or bad music.

Bob Marleys One love talks about the coming of God's Kingdom that is Gospel. Some so called Christian music is thrash, any so called Christian music that talks much about oppression by the devil makes no sense to me. A song titled jump and pass makes no sense to me because I prefer breaking all obstacles in front of me and yet you see Christians dancing to such songs without thinking.

I am about to qoute the lyrics from a secular musician from Jamaica called koffee her song toast has lyrics as follows: "Yashua's blessings upon me that's why I give you this story, for me no rise and boast ". She gives thanks saying the blessings of Jesus is upon her and for that reason she can't go about boasting.

Listen to music that has good message. Some so called Christian music doesn't preach true Christianity, Christianity is a way of life not a set of rules. So only listen to good music. Christ was mingling with everyone and that didn't stop his from being the anointed one. Anyone that goes about seeing evil about everyone is not of christ because you cannot see evil and yet still have the mind to preach to them. You may even preach and and convert some persons and another Christian just like you will come and condemn them and make the to back slide.

The spirit behind people seeing bad in everything is a bad spirit. This spirit makes us to create new laws and make people see God Almighty as a being that doesn't like to see his creation happy, then Satan continues to trick them based on this mindset.

Once again we have only two types of music, good music and bad music and this classification is based on the message that is sent. Avoid any religious groups that makes extra laws that was not written in Gods word, example instead of drunkenness is a sin they say drinking of alcohol is a sin. The almighty made all things including alcohol and declared them to be good on the seventh day but Satan came and saw bad and keeps making multiple laws and rules to deceive everyone.

Follow the law of Christ believe in the coming kingdom of God with Christ as king, don't put your trust in material things, tell people about this kingdom, then you are a Christian. If you do these things then you are a Christian.

Music and Movie producers are business men and women, they do what will attract fans (customers) and failure to do this means they're not professionals.
So each person concentrate on the aspect were they will gain more subscribers, it's left to each customer to select what pleases you in their stuff. But to think there is anything worldly or not is preposterous, they're all looking for money so they can't be truly religious inwardly as most of you are thinking!
Just go out there and select wisely that's all! smiley

I'll reply you this last time since it has become apparent that you want to argue away from the main question asked by the OP.

Secular artists have over the years used their large fan bases and entertainment platforms to effect positive changes in Nigeria and the world at large.

Many Nigerians have come out to protest at the call of their favorite musicians. From Charley boy to Eedris, 2Baba et al. How many Christian artists have sang about corruption, nepotism, extra judicial killings and other vices in Nigeria? How many have led protests in this country?

During the build up to this past presidential election, many secular artists came together to sensitise the citizens about their votes through music.
Till today, there is no more powerful song that is being used for charity fundraising like "we are the world" by Michael Jackson.

What have our Christian artists been doing? They have rarely involved themselves whether passively or actively in nation building.
While secular artistes were sensitising the populace about electoral bribing and violence, our Christian artistes were nowhere to be found.
I sent the song "Paper" by Falz to some young people who wanted to do Yahoo out of frustration and after listening to it, they were enlightened.
Go and listen to the album "Moral instruction". Don't let sentiments blind you to the truth in non gospel songs.
I bet if you were among the spies sent to spy Jericho, you would refuse Rahab the prostitute's help just because you would judge her by who she is and not what she wants to do.

@OP,
All immoral songs are secular songs but not all secular songs are immoral songs so be careful what type of secular song you listen to. Secular songs should instruct you morally, and also awaken your conscience.

Alicia Keys sang about the many evil things happening in Nigeria and other countries in her song "We are here" and imagine the number of her fans that will listen to that song and if they were not aware or concerned about the things happening in Nigeria would become aware and concerned.

So OP, listen to good music no matter the genre. Many of the so called Christians bashing you have been reading other good books apart from the Bible. They go to secular schools, read secular books and work in secular organizations.
Read and listen to things with good, educative and inspirational contents.
I listened to "I'm a survivor" by Beyonce and I was pumped to pick the pieces of my life and move on.
Till today, my ringtone has been "What are you waiting for? " by Nickelback. It reminds me to never wait until I have everything perfect before I launch my dreams.

Kenny Rogers sang a song "Gambler" and if many youths would only follow the contents of that song, they would break free from the addiction of gambling.
Secular artistes are not "sinners" for singing a different genre of song. Music is a tool and people can use it for good or bad.
We still have decent non gospel artists.
Not all Christians can be Pastors, not all Christians can be gospel artistes.

If you like sleep in church but promote evil, you are a sinner.
Focus always on the message and truth is truth no matter who says it. Even our religious leaders are imperfect but if we were to focus on them instead of their messages, we would never grab what they are trying to pass to us.

I don too write. OP, when you're down, listen and read inspirational and motivational books, when you're with your wife and want to be romantic, dim the lights and play some blues. When you want to learn how to express your love better to your family and wife, read good romantic and relationship books. When you want to celebrate your spouse, play Simi, Adekunle Gold and Johnny Drille. When you want to worship God and pray, play Dr Enenche worship songs (Like "There is a place", "Sweet Holy Spirit", and "There is a Mountain"wink) and other powerful worship songs. When you want to praise God, play some RCCG praise songs. Watch good movies that teach business, family, relationship and other important life lessons. These are my recommendations.
Just try and balance all these with moderation while pursuing God's purpose for your life and striving to give your family and self the best of life.

Have you seen the movie "Jesus Christ superstar", it was on Broadway and my first introduction to the character called Jesus Christ. To this day, that is the only Jesus movie that moves me to.want to know truth and it is a secular movie by all accounts.

What is my point? What speaks to A is not going to be what speaks to B. God created us all that way for His glory. We poo poo His work when we pretend only that which works for us should work for everyone.

Yes it affect your spiritual growth

Sadly, the reason genres were created was to help artists better compete with other artists on the market.
It is a shame that some have chosen to "spirituality" such labels pretending that somehow God sanctioned their preferences over that of others innthis.
