EgunMogaji2: That’s why I asked what type of repairs do the plumber want to carry out. @Focusmind don’t go too low if your project is in Lekki or waterlogged area. Brick chambers aren’t watertight o. It’s unlike pvc chambers that you can easily add pipes to raise it above flood level. |

Sholapey: Hmm. I can only recommend my carpenter. You buy your wood. He’ll do the needful. I don’t sell wood nor do I have anyone I can recommend. I just go to nearest wood market, look for good ones and buy them. 2 Likes |

EgunMogaji2: Exactly.... that's what I did too as a novice in building knowing fully well builders/owners in my region goes for the cheapest form without chaining....I was told chaining was ONLY necessary from 2 story building..... that was always the end of the discussion anyway trying to tell me safety is not necessary lol. 2 Likes |

EgunMogaji2: I am sorry if I come across as harsh. It was not my intention. I can be better than that. In your comments, you just admitted that chambers are a necessary fixtures of homes albeit provided by the government but situated away from the property but the property can access it's use. So in the US, you may build a local one for self use but you don't have to. However in Nigeria, the government and councils are largely irresponsible and unresponsive, so we build everything. It is not silly we build chambers in Nigeria. The building needs inspection chambers but the governments fail to provide these in public space planning so we do it ourselves. In all your stay in the West, have you ever seen water tower or ground floor water tanks in private homes? No because the responsible government provide water with good pressure to homes. But in Nigeria we do. So it is not silly we do but a reaction to irresponsible leadership and providing practical solution to a fundamental need. In the US have you ever seen soakaway in majority of private homes as we do in Nigeria? No, because the government provide public sewer. But in Nigeria we do. So it is not silly we do as we have to provide these ourselves. Have you seen generator house, gateman house in private America homes? No as the government provide electricity and security. But in Nigeria we do. So it is not silly we do as we have to generate our own power and provide personal security. In short, every homeowner is a local government and the Nigerian engineers and builders are just providing practical solution to fundamental need. They are not silly. When we bring ideas from abroad we MUST marry such ideas with the reality in Nigeria to find a perfect fit to SOLVE the problem and not complicate it. There is this superiority complex in some of us awayrians that could blind us to the practical reality of life Nigeria which hinders our adaptibility when in Nigeria. This superiority complex is one of the reasons why some awayrians fail to integrate back into the country of their birth. In Nigeria there's always a reason why certain things are done in a certain way. Find out that reason first before turning abroad for a solution that may complicate the situation. 12 Likes |

diordaves: I’ve owned and lived in homes with septic tanks in the USA. I have many friends whose source of water is from boreholes. The USA is pretty large and diversified. Generators and gateman houses abound in Southern California albeit in mostly private communities. I’m pretty comfortable with my builds. I have never and will never suggest for anyone to follow my ideas. I hate chambers, I think they are nonsense. I put my money where my mouth is and I’m living comfortably with my choices. Daily, not as as two weeks per year vacation thing but day in and day out. I’ll continue to use and share my methods but no one is forced to use them. I “try” to build my houses to USA building codes, not just Nigeria building codes. My estate was recently visited by an inspector from my local government and he had nothing but praises for me and wish that most would overbuild like me and follow established protocols. My grouse with you is that you choose to paint with a wide brush. But that’s okay too, we can’t all be the same. 3 Likes |

omanzo02: I consider myself lucky with my current bricklayer. He’s impressed me by going beyond what I call “Local standards”. I didn’t have to even tell him to chain my current bungalow build. We as property owners have to be involved. |

Will you just look at these anti environmentalist nut jobs without grass in there yards? Folks, it’s your house and your property. Live your life as you wish while considering your locale. Don’t criticize the choice of others. If you want grass, do grass. If you want stained concrete, do it. If you want Pacific Ocean sand, do it. All those fantastic homes that were built by the Awolowos, the Okeowos, the Arisekolas, etc where are they now? Most are inhabited by weeds, dirt, etc Life’s too short.
