Hey guys i need ya advice please.

My dad and my aunt wants me to study law because of some reasons best know to them. I am a Civil Servant in a State High Court reason why they want me to study law. I am tired, i don't have the passion non zeal for law.

Right from my sec school days i have always love and dream of being a Banker or an Economist but my family members want to "put sand" in my future embarassed

Please guys help me, i am in my early 20s and i don't wanna waste 4-6yrs studying what i don't have passion for.

Pls i need more audience.

First, don't be allowed to push into a discipline that you don't have passion for. You might end up regretting. The fact that you have been working in the judiciary is not enough reason to be pushed into studying Law. Gone are the days people were meant to believe that Law pays. However, some individuals still create their niche in Law profession. Years ago, on the eve of graduation from the lions den, the then Dean Faculty of Engineering, UNN, Prof. Osadebe told us the graduands in our fellowship, that during his time, they were made to understand, that any discipline outside Medicine, Law, Engineering and Accountancy is rubbish. Having spent years practising and lecturing engineering in UNN, he discovered that the most widely traveled and richest academjc in UNN as at then did not study any of those courses. He is a Historian. A prof of History.

Away from the above, if your quest to study Economics like most people thought is because you think it is about demand and supply, please, I will plead with you not to tow that path. But if you are determined, it is a very interesting discipline. It requires mathematics, further mathematics, statistics as well as analytical skills. Most of the applications will require you to at least perform first, partial and second order derivatives since we, economists are often times interested in the margin (slope).

I see no problem here..
Study Law,graduate and fail at the career so your family will realize they made a mistake.
Then you can start smoking weed out of frustration, maybe join a cult too.
In other words,become very useless.
They will realize their mistake.
I will sponsor myself with at least 80%

It will be very lovely if u take the advice, to study law and after u study further economics...I think there are post-graduate courses which are law- economic related...in that way u kill two birds with one stone...listen to them ....there are times people see some potential in you that u don't see...they believe u can thrive in law effortlessly, while u believe u can thrive in economics effortlessly....do the two my friend ...don't be lazy... u'll make a great economist if u listen to this.
Ok sir. cool

such is life.
in 2015, i wanted to study law too but my mother didn't support me 100%.
may be that is why I wasn't given the law add despite passing the criteria (lol)
afterall I'm now a graduate

lesson is you need their blessing if you really want to do another thing apart from what they want unless you can sort your self out financially

Don't study law or banking and finance because you have a dream of working in a bank. Anyone can work in a bank.

Go for economics and while you at it, get some skills in programming, data science, information technology.

Good luck!!

Verdict:Sorry bro no way out here, it's either you study law or you study law..

Here is what some people did in my time, you will study their law till 400l then take jamb for your Economic and statistics, if you get lucky you will be in finals in law and 100 in the other course.. Once you Done with your law, take the result to your dad and a photocopy to your aunt. Walk away and continue the course you got passion for.

The Economics get far more prospects today than that Law dem wan force you so, ABI your dad think say 2020 and forward na their time.

Abobi no try am, no even think am. First of all, look for young Law graduates around you and show your dad how well they are doing. The Economics has more flexibility or you want to study what you won't have space to practice?

The world is changing. Our environment too.

Some courses are becoming irrelevant with time and oversaturated too. Why would you want to study a course like archeology in Nigeria? This is the computer age. The Chinese understands that and most schools are teaching kids computer programming at an early age of 10 years old.

Instead of those courses that I listed, it's better the child develops an interest in sports or science related courses.

Bro, as e dey now, your life dey your hand. Try and reason with them that you know the efforts and commitment needed to succeed in studying law and rising along that career path but your heart is elsewhere; and you won't like to turn out to become a failure as well.

Just try as much as you can to convince them.

If they insist but you still have a desire in pursing a career as an economist; since you already have a diploma certificate, apply for direct entry into any university near you. Part-Time preferably.

By all means, do not resign from your place of work o. E get why.

I did same nasty mistake and I struggled all through my Direct Entry University program since I had no sponsor.

I studied law.

Don't waste your time.

I doubt up to 40% of law graduates in Nigeria, are currently working in a law-related field.

Don't waste your time and money, studying something you have no passion for. You will just be punishing yourself.

Pursue your dream, show them successful economist and bankers like Soludo, Ngozi, Sanusi etal. Let them know that a successful man can get the best Lawyers like Falana and co for them to settle any scores or plans they have. You dont have to force them to agree with you, just follow your dream and be determined to proof them wrong by working hard and be the best.

You're working as a civil servant at the State's High Court. Lawyers are legal professionals. The judge or judges are legal professionals. Your family wants you to be a professional in your workplace, and not just an ordinary employee. They want you to be recognized. Don't be content being an ordinary salary earner. Strive to grow. And for the love of Christ, forget that crap called passion. It is used by motivational speakers to confuse a lot of people. Following your passion doesn't put food on your table. Following WHAT WORKS puts food on your table.

Imagine working in a hospital setting. Only the doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and physiotherapists are known. The rest are ordinary and considered irrelevant. YOUR FAMILY WANTS YOU TO BE RELEVANT AT YOUR WORKPLACE. STRIVE TO BE RELEVANT, unless you're just there for the salary (which is why many civil servants don't progress anyway).

We youths always think we know better, but the truth is, WE KNOW NOTHING.

It's a free world, but think and think and think before countering the decisions or advise of your elders.

Between, have they volunteered to sponsor you?

If only he could listen eh....why would he even wanna be a banker with this high rate of sack anyways?

TimoWerner, the thing is getting a job in Nigeria is super hard unless you plan to leave the country. Your Family is right, They are trying to make you succeed in a career that you are already part of. DO NOT COMPARE PASSION FOR REAL WORLD ISSUES. I studied economics, I even got MSc sef, Trust me d course ain't as awesome as it sounds. When I got a chance to work at NDIC, a senators boy with 3rd class got the job and rendered all my cert useless. grin

Its a tough choice bro, but always follow your heart. Most young lawyers are into corporate law and taxation (Finance related careers).
But the angle I'm looking at is your age : you're in your early 20's and if you're fortunate with the admission to study Banking & Finance / Economics next year, can you graduate with a decent grade before 25 considering ASUU strikes and school internal strikes ?
Because most Bank & Finance entry level job requirements is pegged at 26 max 27, the Big 4 companies inclusive.
And I hope you're quite good with maths to study Finance or Economics.
These are questions you should ask and seek clarifications on.

What do you want to do with Banking or Economics, or who says Lawyers cant work as a banker !
I will advise that you take the law and use it to work in the bank if you still feel strongly about it. A day may come that Banking will frustrate you the way it has frustrated others, then you will have a fall back in law and you can practice.
I always tell kids to study what they can practice outside employment, it gives you options
