If increase in tariff will bring about stable supply, then so be it. Anything other stable power supply will not be accepted.

What happens when it gets stable and the people cannot to afford it? It is tendering towards that.

Hike or no hike, let there be meters so that people will pay for what they use. The problem of light currently in Nigeria are those marketers that are stealing from the system under estimated billing. This is my first hand experience, those guys need to be eliminated first if we plan to solve the problem of power in this country

I now see there is no difference between this man and the dullard we placed in Abuja. These yeye man said federal government have been subsidizing electricity but most post paid users have humongous amount of debt on their bills so the question remains where is the subsidy going to or may be Mr Moghalu is just speaking trash so as to stay relevant.

Takeaway

Cost of one kilowatt hour is 53 Nair

Nigerians have been paying less than 31 naira

And we expect discos to keep on selling power at a loss, same.for gencos?

No wonder we don't have light.

Subsidies again

This is what we were searching for in the news, as we have been advocating for a long time now.

We will pay for only what we use.
This is the same way it is done in saner climes.

A better Nigeria is all we want.
A better Nigeria is what we shall get.
Slow and steady we will get there as a nation.

This is a very sensible comment from a true Nigerian.

So you did not read the part where he said that one kWh of power costs N53, yet even with the hike Nigerians are paying 31 naira for one kWh

In other words, the reason why we don't have power is because discos and gencos are operating at a loss.

Let me bring it to the level you can grab. You are buying exercise books at 150 to sell at 210, making a profit of 60 naira.

Government comes in, tells you to sell the books you bought at 150 at 100 naira instead of at the 210 you were intending to sell, and they pay you 30 naira for every book you sell as subsidy

So you lose 20 naira per book sold

Tell me, how would you sustain your business.

You want free of charge. You don't think about how the people who give you electricity would eat, or buy the material needed to make things better because you must have awoof.

No wonder you don't have light.

Honestly, Nigerians don't understand the article

Power costs 53 naira per kWh. We are selling it at 31 naira per kWh. Government is paying a subsidy of 22 naira per kWh, which amounts to 1.5 trillion naira annually

Money that could have been used for something else if we had allowed the discos and gencos charge 60 naira per kWh

Yes, we will suffer high tarrifs, but we would save 1.5 trillion which can be used for things like education, health and roads and railways.

But because we want awoof, we force discos and gencos to sell at a loss, many of us don't pay our bills, and even when they give us meter, many of is bypass the meters to get frer ee power

Then we come and ask why we don't have light.

There is a serious problem with Nigeria..We want awoof.Meanwhile most of us won't reduce the price of what we sell to help poor Nigerians because we know we would be broke

Yet we want to bankrupt our power sector in the name of free electric power

So even when Federal Government know very well that the power firms are using estimated billings.

You still insist to take everybody on a spill, then mention subsidy.

Bitter Truth: virtually everything in Nigeria is subsidized.

We want to enjoy good infrastructure and all, but we don't want to pay for it.

We can't continue like this.

This is not d time for hike in any product. Government failed to address d issue of distribution of electricity in Nigeria. The output is poor and unavailable in some areas.
Moreover, power should not only be regionalized but The Monopoly of region distributors have to be broken so that customers can switch in between different distributors. If BEDC is not functioning,I can switch to IKEDC. Regional competition will enhance good and customer friendly services.
That can't work for now. My Kano people do you switch from one disco to another?

Subsidies again

Madam,
The Nigerian masses are the ones subsidizing the civil and public servants and not the other way around. In most cases, there are always multiple ways to view a situation.

Question: why is the cost of a kilowatt of electricity 53 naira? Most likely because the gas used to produce electricity is priced in US Dollars.

Our politicians waste our oil revenues on cars, houses and phones depleting our foreign reserves. They also pay little to no taxes.

The CBN is then forced to increase the price of dollars to limit its demand thus devaluing our currency, and forcing the Nigerian masses to pay higher cost for electricity and petroleum.

Question: Nigerians are currently paying the highest price in our history for petroleum. Do you think our neighboring countries are also paying their highest price too.

Fuel prices are tied more directly to the weakness of the naira then to fluctuations in the price of crude. If Nigeria was properly managed. Fluctuations in crude price would not automatically lead to a fall in the value of the naira. E.g. the Russian ruble and the SA Dinar.

1. I am a male actually.

2. Gas is paid for in US dollars. (Found that out a few years ago...news report)

3. I am aware that we have corrupt politicians. I don't condone corruption.

4. However,we are supposed to be running power as a business. What we have been doing instead is forcing it to run at a loss

I will at this point strongly suggest that you Google for the price Waterhouse Coopers report on our power sector. In brief, the whole thing has been running at a loss

5. I am going to ask you a question. Would you buy pens at 50 naira a piece and sell them at 20 naira a piece while accepting a subsidy from the government of 20 naira per pen sold?

6. There is a reason why socialist policies fail. People need money.

7. What you are advocating is that power companies keep on selling power at a loss. Meanwhile government keeps on subsidising them. That means they cannot make a profit , which could be reinvested in making things much better...things like new equipment, better staff salaries, expansion of our power supply etc.

8. I happen to think that socialism is good..But socialism works when there is money to make it work. Nigeria is a poor country, and the looting makes it worse.

9 You can call me heartless, but we have to make our power sector profitable. Otherwise, we are going to keep on suffering poor power.

10. This GSM we are using . Back in the day people like you wanted government to reduce the price they charged for their services. Government refused to listen, and they exploited us....and used their profits to build the it network we have today. Which has provided jobs , and more jobs. And which is why I have gone from spending 200 naira for slow two hour internet at a cafe, to faster internet from home

Either we let the discos be profitable, so that they can have the money to build up our power sector, or we keep on playing socialism., And getting poor power supply. After all, it's what we can afford , we are poor.

Power, sadly is not cheap.

And before you start, I don't necessarily like what I have written on this thread. Sadly, this is the reality. We cannot be buying things at a cost below what it cost to make them. After a while, there is no money to keep on making the stuff.

That's why we have poor power supply and bad refinery's. We are running them at a loss, and using corruption prone subsidies to maintain an illusion
