LaEvilIMiss: That's a big part of why some of us think subsidies should go But the thing is, Nigerians like low fuel prices. In fact, subsidy is one issue where the interests of the elite and the poor coincide. Cheap fuel in return for cheap profits The irony is removing subsides would have made many of those oil companies you call out richer. And after a period of high prices, competition would have pushed fuel prices down eventually...good for the poor. But people don't like hardship, and the elite don't want to work for their money 3 Likes 1 Share |

This shows that our govt doesn't know the plight of Nigerians. This kind of policy is not favorable at this moment when many people are out of jobs and corona virus have ravaged the economy. In the developed countries, the is d best time that the govt is needed to bridge the gap between the rich and poor through expansionary monetary policies. The issues with this policy is that it gives room from the rich to become richer n the poor will get poorer. Petroleum is an essential commodity in Nigeria which if not regulated by the govt might lead to a serious issue among Nigeria. Govt around the world regulate essential commodities to protect the interest of the poor. Shalom |

Vulcanheph: In simple terms Back in 2011, fuel cost 65 naira at the pump It cost 99 naira to produce it That leaves a difference of 34 naira between the cost of production and the cost at selling it Government pays a subsidy of 34 naira per liter. But because the system does not allow marketers make a profit, many of them game the system by making claims for petrol not sold, or smuggling the petrol out of the country or selling petrol at inflated prices. That's a potted description of how a subsidy works 2 Likes |

I say it again, Nigeria is filled with the dumbest set of people. What concerns removal of subsidy with the current situation? that is the least factor. Oil prices are down. Are your refineries working? Have corruption involved in the landing costs and transportation of petrol been removed? You are importing petrol using the cost of labour and productivity of another country and foreign exchange when your currency is doing poorly, added to landing and transportation costs. Why won't rthe prices be high? Your own refineries that should be refining oil at the cost of production of the country and also adding money to the national purse are running at negative to the tune of billions. It is not to remove subsidy and go to sleep. The refineries was a 2015 campaign promise, 5 years on, has it been delivered? The FG should urgently sell a 51% stake in all the refineries and utilize the money for the partners to do a full revamp of the refineries and operate it. I fully support the removal of the fraudulent subsidy. It should probably be returned as it is, the failure of the present government to act early means that Dangote is the only saviour. And it should be in place till he starts operations and then taken out completely. Action should be taken to get private operation of the refineries immediately. 1 Like |
