Half tiling could be cheaper but I may be wrong....but you will have a better interior decoration with an half tile kitchen or toilet, where big or small the choices are enormous.

I am not a building expert tho....I think you can use 6inches for the upper floor to reduce load on the decking and ground floor pillars/column...one foot is not really much.....check out some thread here from:
@spyder880,
@rotecch77,
@Timol,
@Dennis3D,
@n3xt
etc
to see and get insight of what are possible in the building construction.

But reducing the pillars to 20 could have some effect on the structure.....I would advice to maintain the same numbers of pillars for the upper floor.

I hope they notice your questions for a better answer.

Smiles. We are all waiting for the pics of the truck.

I’m not seeing myself opening threads on construction updates any time soon. Maybe customers can have access to construction updates on NextHome website tho.

But I’m sure I’d start sharing #bestofnaijahomes and the unique designs in the contemporary world which is my core. We’d be exploring alternative construction methods.

In the meantime, the modernist should check this out [/b]

Hahahaha....There is already 3D printing building system, I hope it get to Nigeria soon when it goes on sale.
The house is 2 storey duplex made from concrete, I wished we have an encouraging public system that sparks our creativeness and innovation.

You can get it locally and even far better designs.

I have personally seen all full wall tiles and partly full wall tiles in the USA and some other part of the world I have been to and I think building construction are very different from what I am use to in Europe where
creative combination of walls and tiles are popular in kitchen, bathrooms and toilets but cross boarder sourcing of ideas and interior decoration u find a mix of both these days.....some apart toilets don't need tiles at all.
I just felt we can be more creative and do better than the general view that only tile can get us a better decoration or keep moisture away.

I always and will always tile all my wet areas in Nigeria not because I don't know of alternatives but because of the unique situation in Nigeria of building with bricks. They only way I won't use tile is if I apply a waterproof barrier of some sort.

It just grinds my gears when people write as if we don't know of building choices and just do follow follow.

I once did an open plan studio concept for a mixed used development and we had plans to carve out a bath from the open space.

The architect asked me how do you intend to control damp in the room. There were no tiles, no floor drain etc.

I simply told him “We are using Backer Boards.”

The real issue is not using tiles but most people don’t even know the alternatives out there.

Aesthetics: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Cost: What is the difference in price between tiles and gypsum board?

Yes. Actually I don't have any project that require doors for now but I am impress with the way you always come up with reduced price of door and gate. Just proof yourself right to all the questions members of this thread will ask you, money is not easy to get.

How many members on here have bought art those reduces price and can attest to it and the quality?

Honest question.

Thank you for this. You have really done a proper background check on him. He is no welder nor fabricator. Just a middle man posting random pictures from different workshops.

Nothing is actually wrong about doing "Baranda" if he is honest about it through I will never patronize one knowingly. To be honest I do not hire from Nairaland as a rule but I do occasionally (my Architect is from here), not that there is no fantastic artisans on here but the internet makes it easy for unscrupulous characters to create a fake persona.

The issue I have is with the price. I searched diligently locally here and the best I could get was N45K for quality that is acceptable to me. The risk here is that a new builder would try to find N16K doors locally to him and run himself mad doing so.

In my humble but untested opinion, tiling will be cheaper if it's to be done right. Just slapping paint on bare concrete wall without water proof gypsum board is not proper.

A lot of these pictures that we gloat over are fresh and new. Let people show their 2, 3, 4 year old constructions. Na me know wetin I dey see for my less than 2 year lived in house. Basically before I eat ata in the morning there's a group of artisan that I send either prayer or epe to.

The most expensive part of the steel door which is the metal plate is sold N4,500 - N5,000

Prince Royal, Apata - Ibadan

What else would add up to make up the 45k door?

Double Plates would be 9k - 10k
Frames, welding, painting and transport can’t be 36k.

USA: Green Gypsum board on wood frame or block. I won't be abet to pass inspection if I don't have it in all wet areas.

Nigeria: Well grouted and sealed tile on concrete block. "I" to use my best judgement to protect my family and tenants since there's no inspection in Nigeria.

As usual, this is what "I" do. Not a bible and doesn't need to be followed.

2) I didn't retire back home to nickel and dime a local artisan to death over $1/N450

3) I am comfortable with what I paid for the product that was delivered.

4) I built a relationship.

Yes sir.

I am sharing so that we don’t end up crucifying a man who posted 18k for a door the whole world is selling 35k.

Once a while we need to know what goes where to give fair judgement.

My welder was stuttering when I just ask him now to give me the price of a designed plate. He said 4500 and he makes a door 45k.

I have no Dog in the fight. I don't hire off of Nairaland so I'm immune. Even as a business owner my solidarity is with the individual builder. I do not want some little guy that wants to place a dwelling above his family's head to scour his local town looking for a non existent N16K iron door.

If I was sitting in the USA and I sent money home to have a door bought and they said they spent N35K (your figure) and I read this piece for N16K, what do you think I would be thinking Sir?

We have to look at both sides.

Iron Worker has to:

1) Pay rent

2) Pay for electricity

3 Buy petrol/diesel

4) Buy electrodes

I weld also, so I know how much electrodes will go into a door.

I was looking at the quote like shocked

Again, I don't know this welder they are beating up here and I haven't done any business with him. We have swapped few emails, yes and just like every one could testify, he is really eloquent. But we haven't done any business per se and I haven't met him.

I make my comments solely from what I see on here. What I see is people badgering the guy. Just like a similar strategy used by Nigerian police force grin " you stole that phone, abi, just tell me you stole it and I will let you walk"
Corrupt cops everywhere else in the world also do this.

This guy have repeatedly stated here, I do some of this work, I pay helper if I have to, I sub the work if there's need for it.. yes , I look online or my colleagues work and see the finished products, if you want them, we will talk the price , I might do some of it, hire a helper to assist or bring in a colleague to assist... people, what is unusual about these arrangements

Is there any engineer here, architect or the likes that will come here and testify that when they have a big job, they do it all by themselves or when they have projects in multiple states, multiple cities at the same time that they are always present throughout the build at every second workmen are on site?? No, they visit the sites frequently yes, but they have a helper that keeps the troops in line, a head bean counter.

I know a reputable builder here but won't drag his name in this conversation ( it is unnecessary) i don't know how many builds he was handling at that moment but I know he was handling a project of 2 of my friends at the same time.. his crew were tied up on a different project and he sourced artisans from the place the projects were situated ... does that mean he is a fraud? No, he delivered a superb build , and I have seen the updates he sent to his clients, the everything, have seen the build myself. It was amazing.. I really wish I could mention name here but lipsrsealed I won't drag him here.

That this welder didn't have much of his work posted in a thread. I have engaged an architect here on nairaland that only have few of their work posted, plus a thread not regularly updated for years, but he delivered my work for me and I am happy for it.. I asked why he doesn't update his thread for a potential of more work, he said he doesn't have the time to update the thread, answer back and forth questions and he is doing well for himself.

Just recently, couple of months ago. I came across this posting of a lady advertising her husband's work.. the husband is a carpenter- makes furniture.. she didn't know how to update the threads, make it entertaining etc..like uploading pictures, prices etc.. but she was quickly advised to and she did. She didn't have bunch of thread littering nairaland advertising her husband's work either. I am glad to inform you that I engaged her and husband for a project and they delivered ( it was not for me, but I gifted that to someone). The person that received it was happy with what their hand work. The reason why I engaged their services was not because of thread or no thread. I was happy how that lady was trying to ginger for more business for her husband. My reasoning could be faulty, I know but the money was coming out of my pocket not yours grin

Again, due diligence is still required, this is not a testimony of how good the welder is but in this climate of fraudulent activities..let's not simply "assume " and come up with stories ( that are really not triggers of fraudulent activities).

As for the price of those doors.. I am currently on top of a project that I was forced to use iron internal doors( I argued and failed to convince folks). The price per door was actually in the neighborhood of 15k-17k per door. And this welder is not the person doing the job.
