The Best Method To Learn And Master Javascript as a broke boy/girl. by squash47(m): 9:03am On Sep 14, 2020
So, since March, (after the first semester exam) I have been studying this scripting language called JavaScript. Because I didn't have money to pay for online course or download YouTube videos, I decided to use the poor smart man method.

What I did

I got an Airtel Sim and started using Opera free daily 50 mb.

Then, I searched the internet for the best website with a syllabus for learning JavaScript, and luckily for me, I stumbled up on javatpoint.com.

I copied down all the sub topics into a note.

Then, I bought about 15 extra notes (60 leaves + 40 leaves).

I began to develop notes on each of the topics. Seriously, it was not easy copying everything that was on a website, but because I have promised myself that I must be a JavaScript expert, I didn't mind the pains and stress.

And as luck may have it, I have mastered all the basics of JavaScript. Infact, I can now think like a programmer.

The next step for me now is to start studying the Advanced part of JavaScript.

But I'm considering suspending it till next year.

Because, right from when I was in ss2 in 2012 , I swore to myself that I must be a JavaScript wizard. And my dream is coming to reality. Thanks to d Coronavirus lockdown.

And my nairaland friends.

Guys, if you really want to learn JavaScript, don't start with videos on YouTube. Just be reading the theory aspect. And make notes like the normal class room activity.

Your last paragraph is totally wrong. People learn in different ways, there are visual learners everywhere and that's how I learnt programming. Kindly focus on your learning process before you start giving bogus advise on the Internet.

That your learning pattern is wrong. In YouTube videos, you don't have a means of asking questions and getting quick reply. Plus, you can not refer back to the points stated in the video in case of emergency like when you don't have data or battery.

But by taking notes, you can have access to your note anytime, any minute no matter d circumstances.

Also, YouTube tutorials does not give an in-depth analysis or explaination of the topic like the written tutorials do. This because, YouTube is expensive and cost more than written articles interms of data publication.

I'm ready to argue this further.

What works for you may not work for others,I hate reading books on programming, I prefer videos and I can go to books for reference, so whatever rocks your boat

I learnt javascript that way too. By taking notes from freecodecamp,tutorialpoint,w3schools etc... as you take notes the concepts stick to your brain then I supplement it with videos from youtube while I work on projects.

Then lastly, I work on a capstone project without the aid of videos, only asking help from google and stackoverflow. It takes more time but it's the best way to learn in my opinion.

Unfortunately you can't say my learning pattern is wrong. Learning is not a one way street and I've been writing javascript since 2012. There are different ways to learn, it's a simple thing you can Google. Btw if you need to ask questions, there is Stackoverflow, and various slack and discord channels to do that. Once again focus on your learning process.

From my perspective, your learning pattern works if you want to be a javascript tutor or just to be exposed to the language. But to make significant strides, you will not even remember take notes.
How much notes can you even take?

Your notes will be your past projects. A pdf may be open in one window and your IDE in another window sometimes.
When you want to reuse something you've written before but can't remember, you open your past projects, copy code, paste and continue developing.

Without actual projects , you'll remain in the same level for a long time, which is a waste of time to me.

What!?

You don't need to write them out on notes. There's a save for offline option on opera.

Save the page and read it later.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO WRITE IT OUT!!!

You should also look into night plans.

Soon you'll start downloading libraries.

@OP... You are sincerely wrong.... very soon you'll find book doesn't really teach like docs...what den would you say afterwards .. People learn things differently.

if I want to have quick overview of a technology I watch YouTube, if I really want to know more I go for books, if I find my self downloadn or using more than two books for a course, I would go straight into docs.....

Can you do the bolded when your phone battery is low or you don't have enough data ? Or, can you underline or highlight a point like u will do in a normal note book ?

Sure you can teach later, that would depend on your personal experience.

So sorry about your case @OP.
But you know what? My case is even worse, I can relate to your experience I have no phone (literally), I use a NOKIA ASHA to browse and I take notes too I have a laptop and a modem but the internet connectivity in my area is nothing to write home about so I spend the nights surfing the net.
I sometimes see COVID-19 as a blessing in disguise because I'm surprised by the amount of knowledge I've been able to amass since the lockdown which wouldn't have been possible if school is on.
I'm sure things will get better soon.

To the guy who started this learning process stuff, I got something to tell you. The way I learn can never be the same you learn. I am in ss2 and I have been programming since 2015, but I got serious about it in 2017.I program in Python, PHP and I have little experience in dart and java and I too know JavaScript but not to an expert level. I learnt mainly by videos on YouTube, following channels like Tech with Tim, Traversy Media, Clever programmer and even Dev Ed. I love learning by pratical and visual than reading but I have a friend who prefer to read PDFs than watch videos but still he is a great programmer and that was how he learnt. So pls stop this shit of the best way to learn

If you are in S S S2 like you claimed then you stop cursing.

That being said, there is nothing like best way to learn.

I have video archives.
Ebook archives.
I read documentations.
I read blog posts and tutorials.

It's important to find a method you like and stick to it.
