Life Lessons From Novak Djokovic's Ouster From 2020 US Open by shalumzy(op): 1:00am On Sep 15, 2020
There is a new sherrif in Tennis town. He is Dominic Theim, the winner of the just concluded US Open. Thiem defeated Alexander Zverev in Sunday's Men final to lift his first major title.

In an unsusal twist of fate, the top seeds in the world of tennis were conspicoulsy absent, paving the way for Thiem to clinch the coveted title. Novak Djokovic for instance, who was the tournament favourite to win in the absence of Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, was disqualiified from the tournament for mistakenly hitting the tennis ball on the line judge .

That critical momentary emotional outburst inflicted severe damage to Djokovic's title ambitions as well as his career. Here are some life lessons we can learn from Djokovic's 'five seconds of madness'

Life lessons from Novak Djokovic

1) Be humble enough to accept your mistakes

Novak Djokovic showed great strength of character by owning up and apologising for his error both onfield and later publicly on social media. On realising his mistake, his countenance changed and he immediately went over to apologise to the line judge who was holding her neck in pain

Despite his fame and popularity, he laid aside ego and pride, chose to eat the humble pie, apologised and accepted the disqualification verdict of the umpire.

'I apologise to the US Open tournament and everyone associated for my behaviour' - Novak Djokovic

2) Anger is very costly

Novak Djokovic was the overwhelming favourite to win the 2020 US Open. His closest rivals in persons of Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer were not competing in this year's tournament, hence Djokovic was the expected to claim the title.

Djokovic, however, was angry during the game - he had gotten off to a slow start, was making unforced errors and even slipped and hurt his shoulder at a time. To crown it off, he was trailing his opponent in that round.

In the heat of pressure and emotions, he hit the ball without looking towards the back of the court and it hit the line judge who immediately fell on the ground clutching her neck.

That moment of insanity put a stain on Djokovic's impeccable records, which would take a while to wipe off. It also cost him about $250,000 in prize money as well as forfeiture of ranking points! Unchecked anger is costly. Learn to control your anger.

"If you cannot control your anger, you are as helpless as a city without walls, open to attack."

This is to tell us to always try to put our anger in check. Djokovic has been a player I respect so much in the court. He realised his mistake and apologised; this shows the good side of him.

bros bravo for piecing this together, i want to tell u doh that things may not always appear as they seem, u see lawn tennis is a very emotional sport...
it is almost as compelling as sex... that being said, the passion in tennis is 50 percent mental and 50 percent skill and talent.
if u think djokovic outburst was bad wait till you watch any of serena's tauntrum.
tennis is not a sport where one person dominates for years unchalenged. even KING FEDERER can be beaten... its as much a mind game as well as fitness

I couldn't agree more. Uncontrolled anger is very toxic and can cause collateral damage.

Interestingly,I'm not really a fan of Djokovic. Im a fan of the fed-express - Roger Federer.

I however cant help but admire Djokovic's sterling qualities

I quite agree with the Serena part though. I even mentioned it on the post.

Uncontrolled & frequent emotional outbursts is a ticking time bomb. Its just a matter of time, it will soon explode.
