The answer is simple, Obasanjo left $65b in the foreign reserve. According to prof. Soludo, Yar adua ordered him to use $20b to bridge the revenue gap at the time. Luckily, the recession lasted less than a year.

it simple sir. The crude oil that is the sole stabilization factor of our foreign earnings then was at the all time high of $120 +. Now it s revolving around $40 that difference alone can keep us perpetually under water since we did not invest in any infrastructure during our surplus to make us productive. It will be worse than this in the nearest future if nothing is done drastically to make the country productive. It s beyond politics of apc and pdp. Wastage of our politicians should be look into. You immediately become a millionaire once you get to public office in Nigeria while the entire populace wallowing in purverty.

They did absolutely nothing!! We crawled out of that recession just as we went in.

Let me explain the sequence to you.

First and Foremost, ours was a self inflicted recession, it had nothing to do with 2009 Global economic recession.

The Global one started in 2008 in USA & it was a Housing/Mortgage crisis (Lehman Brothers; FannyMae etc) & the Stock markets suffered & lost value; then it affected Europe; then Asia; then Middle East with a lot of abandoned properties in Dubai.

By the time it went round each continent is sequence, Obama had become President & PUMPED BILLIONS OF DOLLARS into road and bridges construction as it has multiplier effect and threw money at research into solar business and USA began to come out of recession (mind u, it was so bad that pple lost their houses and were sleeping in their cars), the U.K came out of it slowly, then Asia & Middle East. Nigeria was in no way affected by theis Global Economic Recession because we were not running a Credit system...................it was Credit gone bad that sunk the developed world.

Coming back to Nigeria. Our recession was self inflicted & it was simply GREED!!!! The stock market was a Casino!!! banks manipulating and publishing false annual reports and accounts; insider trading, share price manipulation, unsecured credit given by banks to buy shares. IT WAS A MASSIVE BUBBLE & it was replicated in the property market where the profits from stocks were used to buy properties at any amount.

THEN THE FOREIGN HEDGE COMPANIES DUMPED SHARES; TOOK PROFIT & TOOK OFF TO USE THEIR LOOT TO BUY PROPERTIES IN USA THAT WERE NOT 1/10TH OF ORIGINAL PRICE.

So, technically, our economy just found itself where it should have been and then crawled back again

This recession is never like this ever seen before because EVERY country in the world is affected at the same time! The magnitude of it shall be felt for the next 5 years because the world has lost a huge amount of manpower as millions of professionals and entreprenuers have DIED.
Rebuilding again when critical staff have died is not easy on any economy, so right now, countries are more interested in preserving their lives than taking export from each other, so, if you are not trading becos you cant, you have to either borrow or rely on the little savings you have
