If you check Pre-Colonial pictures of igbos documented by the Europeans that visited them, they are all dark and brown like their Africans brothers, the four pictures are of Igbos in 1800 taken by European photographer. Do you see anything like Red Eboe? No.

Let's fast forward it to 2020, if you look around you or your Igbo friends, most of them are dark or brown like their African brothers, go to any igbo dominated market, what do you see? Dark skinned and brown skinned igbos.

Now this is where it get tricky, I know people will ask the question "but what about lightskinned igbos?", there is perfect explanation for that.

Now look at this Pre-colonial pictures of igbos again, do you see lighter shade of skin? The answer is NO. So where does the Igbos get their lightskin from?

To be honest, the truth is igbos bleach the skin of their child right from when they are young, although there is nothing wrong with it, it their body and their child's body. Apart from it, igbo in their teens or adolescent stage also bleach their skin to look more light skinned, i'm not saying other tribes are not doing it, but the magnitude of igbos doing it is more compared to other tribes.

Another perspective is inter marriage between igbos and other tribes from south south, most of the light skinned igbos you're seeing are the cross breed of igbos with their south south neighbours.

Then why do they call them Red Ibos and not not Red Calabar or Red Bonny?

According to Hermann Koler , a German doctor who spent 4 months in Bonny, who made good use of his time collecting word lists, and recording detailed observations about many aspects of Bonny life. This study' s significance for Igbo history lies in the light it sheds on Bonny/Igbo relations in 1840

He wrote and I quote "Of all these, Ibo is the language which is most widely spoken. This is not only because Iboland, through its position at the sources of the Delta, has a natural link with all the coastal tribes in its lower part. It is also due to its power, its extensive area, its richness in products, and the fact that it has developed industries to a greater extent than the people living on the coast. It is also due to the trade of its people, which extends from the sea coast to the far interior, and to their warlike nature, which makes a significant impact on their neighbours. This meant that their language, too, won a certain supremacy among the neighbouring tribes, and the knowledge of it has spread generally. 

They call Iboland Igbinni. It lies at the sources of the Delta, and is full of great forests and mighty trees. It is very rich in natural products--maize, rice, yams, oil palms, dyewoods, cotton, horses and elephants. The numerous inhabitants are industrious, and make cotton cloth (egrabetta), [Italicised African words in this extract are not Igbo but Igbani] iron knives, daggers, spears and musical instruments. At the same time they are warlike, wild, and rapacious, and some of them are cannibals. The short answer, igbos have already dominated most of the Eastern and sea coast neighbours with their culture, influence and language. So by the time they got to Jamaica, an average Bonny will be called an Ibo man instead of his tribe.

The red Eboe are simply riverine or sea coast ethnic groups and not the igbos in the heart of South East.

According to another article, it was stated the red Eboes were taken from a place that in Nigerian that was formerly known as the Bight of Biafra, where Bonny and Calabar formed the two main port town in Nigeria. Was that coincidentally?



Where did the riverine or sea coast/south south got their light skin from?

There are many articles that pointed out to early settlement of Portuguese before the arrival of British. The Portuguese trade freely with the sea coast tribes and interact with them, even have sexual relationship with of them.

I do believe that many igbos tend to exaggerate the occurrence of lightskin amongst the igbo. I do believe and know that most igbo people are brown/dark skinned people and because of colorism, people would rather associate igbos with proximity to whiteness. Bleaching is a huge issue in west africa and bleaching products are sadly accessible.

However, looking at runaway slave advertisements in jamaica, some individual africans (some igbos, and other ethnicities) were described as "yellow." in the book "africa to jamaica, making of a slave society" a group of captives who left a slave port in ghana were described as "yellowish in color" who spoke a distant language and were passed through many hands (sold & resold multiple times before reaching the coast)

So while I do think the frequency of light igbos is wildy exaggerated, I do think that light skin can occur naturally amongst west africa, but only represent a minority (and certainly should be regarded as a distinguishable feature of a certain ethnicity)

The same way that mainly non-Irish people perpetuate the stereotype of the 'red-haired irish' is the same way non-Igbos perpetuate the stereotype of the 'red-skinned igbo'. Why would Igbos exaggerate when they are around each other every day? Even the 'red eboe' thing in Jamaica was created by non-igbo people.

If you carefully re-read my post & understand it objectively, i think it makes perfect sense. I acknowledged, colorism, colonialism, bleaching as to why the stereotype is exaggerated while also offering historical context (with resources you can google) as to why the stereotype exist in the first place. (Europeans literally calling some* africans “yellow” & “red” in their discriptions on runaway slave advertisements in jamaica.)

Dark skin is an adaptation to the intensity of the suns ray which is actually harmful.

If you take a white person and put them in the tropics, they will get skin cancer, but their offspring will be getting darker. That's why tropical Asians are darker than the ones outside the tropics. But Africans have perfected the trend of melanin ab initio.

Every guy that loves giving women attention knows Igbo girls are fairer complexion. But you sit in your room bringing ridiculous stories of kids bleaching skin. Are you ok at all?
