‘“I think the Ghanaian government is working on an agenda aimed at discouraging the influx of Nigerians to Ghana and the growth of Nigerian businesses in their country” I disagree. I am in support of Ghanaian government effort to shut down businesses owned by Nigerians and have Nigerians leave Ghana. In 1983 when Ghanaian government was unable to provide for Ghanaians and Nigerian government did, Nigerian government ordered Ghanaians who were experiencing hardship to leave Nigeria. And here is how that order of Ghanaians to leave Nigeria by President Shagari went down: On January 17, 1983 president Shagari of Nigeria announcement said this in part “declare the expulsion of an estimated two million undocumented migrants living in the country. Half of them were Ghanaian. “If they don’t leave, they should be arrested and tried and sent back to their homes. Illegal immigrants, under normal circumstances, should not be given any notice whatsoever,” President Shagari said. The significant of this refusal by Nigerians to leave in Ghana is an attempt to black mail Ghanaian government. It is not going to work because all Nigerians know how we mistreated Ghanaians in the past. So, I write to ask and beg the Nigerian authorities at home and in Ghana to push for Nigerians to return to Nigeria. What Nigeria did to Ghanaians when they were going through hard times in the 1983 and beyond was inhumane. I cannot see how Nigerians can swallow evil acts meted to Ghanaian people in Nigeria and think it is okay for Ghana to forget it. I am a Nigerian and totally ashamed of Nigerian government conduct in using force to evict poor Ghanaians. No condition is permanent. If you are doing well today in your life, tomorrow is not guaranteed. Besides, if these Nigerians in Ghana think they are good and better than the Ghanaians, why is Ghana the better place to prove their skills? Don’t get it. Fellow Nigerians, stop putting up resistance to leave Ghana. Just go back to your country—Nigeria. 1 Share

Ironi:I used the word harassment in the sentence because of the daily struggle or troubles it has caused the Nigerian Retailers, some which has result in loss of life, destruction of goods and you can see it is harassment. The border closure is linked because the Ghana minister of information has disclosed and claim such in his statement, while addressing the issue on retail trade, according to him (it has cause job loss for his country men). The Nigerian retailers in Ghana refused to obey your laws not every Nigerian is in Ghana. Try to be specific in your statement, it gives easy understanding in reading. |

eeetuk:Actually Ghana did it first in 1969, when they drove out Nigerians, this is just a back and forth issue, I'll paste you an excerpt from an article sharing the experience then, note how the Nigeria tagged it 'aliens' citing reasons for deporting 'undocumented' immigrants during shagari time. My little time in Ghana I must say alot of folks there don't like Nigerians, don't know it's just inbuilt but get ready to be exploited when they know you can't speak or understand Twi and you're Nigerian, o kpa ri, the ones I had good rapor with where guys we grew up together in Nigeria who usually aided me navigate the country, plus those Ghanaians who have lived outside the shores of Ghana, yeah those kind are pretty reasonable and welcoming. "... When he was 14 and in elementary school, back in 1969, he had witnessed the then- Ghanaian prime minister, Kofi Busia, invoke the Aliens Compliance Order and deport an estimated 2.5-million undocumented African migrants, the majority of whom were Nigerians. The Nigerians had grown annoyingly enterprising, their business acumen sharper, to the detriment of Ghanaian businesses. Even in Ghana’s instability, Nigerian traders managed to have everything — and at cheaper prices — Adjei said. The resulting fear shook the Nigerians affected. Most had intermarried, and traced their roots back to trade relationships between the two regions, even before colonial rule. There was one crucial difference between the Nigerians expelled from Ghana in 1969 and the Ghanaians expelled from Nigeria in 1983: the Nigerians had money, said Green Ndume, a Nigerian media entrepreneur who has lived in Ghana for a decade. “I’ve interacted with those who were affected. Unlike the artisans and teachers expelled in Nigeria, they were rich. They were traders in kola nut who made big money and built houses. They left their houses or sold them cheaply.” Nonetheless, in their haste to flee, the Nigerian deportees suffered. “I saw what it was. They were stuck at the Aflao [Togo] border. People died there and it was a humanitarian issue,” Adjei said. The government’s announcement had emboldened ordinary Ghanaians, who taunted the foreigners. Even before the deadline, Adjei remembered chants of: “Go home, go home! What are you still doing here?” You can read up the entire article on the source :atavist.mg.co.za/ghana-must-go-the-ugly-history-of-africas-most-famous-bag. |

RealEzee: Stop giving false information! Why do you people like reducing everything to Nigeria , Nigeria ..because of Nigeria Busia’s aliens compliance order was not about Nigerians !! It was about aliens , it would have been Nigerians compliance order ! In the 60’s Ghana was the place to be and Ghana had Africans from all over making Ghana home. When the economy took a nose dive after Nkrumah and Busia came he thought there were too many aliens than the country can handle and sent them packing. Well, Nigeria did the same when it felt there were too many aliens than it can handle. I personally don’t have problems with policies like that. I believe countries should be able to regulate the influx of foreigners into their country unless you don’t have a problem with foreigners taking over ... Immigrants and foreigners help build your country but when from all intent and purposes they become too hot to handle then it makes sense to advise yourself . |

Legendguy : “It's like you don't know anything. Where were you in the 60s wen ghanians expelled our citizen from Ghana? Or may be u were not born or ur momory is too low that u can't remember” Stop vomiting insult. Just debate the issue raised in my commentary. Or debate people in your class. Okay? Now, if you want to talk about some evil thing Ghana did to Nigerians in the 1960s, I am ready to tell you that Nigeria did not have a functional government then. Some else mentioned 1969 as a year when Ghanaian government expelled 1 million Nigerians. Again, I want to argue that Nigerian did not have a functional government then because of active civil war at that time. Why all these lies that Nigerians are smart, yet, Nigeria is in chaos? In Nigeria, unemployment among all age groups has skyrocketed. In Nigeria, kidnapping is business . In Nigeria, roads are in terrible state In Nigeria, murders of citizens are at all time high. In Nigeria, nothing works. Are these what you guys want to bring to Ghana? No. Ghanaian government is aware of how dangerous Nigerians are and they don’t want any part of that brought to their country. All I want is for the government of Ghana to put order and date for Nigerians to leave their country, period. And Nigerian government should not intervene, period. |

It's a tricky and difficult diplomatic brouhaha between the two sister nations. Trying to bully each other in this day and age simply won't work. We have endless possibilities working together and much more to lose by isolating one another. In every negotiation mutual respect is key. Unfortunately I think this is more of a grassroot problem than the diplomats understand. Whether it's low self esteem or whatsoever it may be about wherever we sojourn, the attitude of some of us seriously irritate our hosts. Here in Lagos you see landlords first asking which part of Nigeria you're from before collecting rent. It will shock you to know the number of Africans living in this country and you will never know they are not part of you, but when we go out we want to impose our lifestyle on our hosts and not everyone will accept it. The Border closure has not helped. Farm produce worth millions of dollars perished at Seme border. Those we closed the borders against have adjusted and calling the bluff! It's not a call to war but to negotiate. If you hold all the cards then we can't play. If not for the inefficiency of the human beings at the borders that allow banned goods in why would a nation close it's borders in the first place? While the parleys go on at the national level, let's learn to live one with another. |
