Governor Nasir El-rufai of Kaduna recently declared three days of mourning for the Emir of Zazzau Alhaji Shehu Idris who passed away on Sunday.

So, Candiidonline dug up a little about some of the great kings of northern Nigeria who have passed away since the start of the 21st century.

During their lifetime, these kings spent several decades living together in various parts of Northern Nigeria and ruling their kingdoms with relative peace. Also, many of these kings died at ripe old ages.

1. Emir of Zazzau, Dr. Shehu Idris

Firstly, Alhaji Dr. Shehu Idris is the longest reigning monarch of Zazzau. His mother delivered him in March 1936.

But many northerners knew his father as Idrisu a.k.a. Auta.

However, the People of Zaria kingdom crowned Alhaji Shehu Idris as the King of Zazzau on February 8, 1975 after the death of King Muhammadu Aminu.

So, King Shehu Idris reigned as the 18th King of Zazzau.

But, he died on September 20, 2020 at the age of 84.

2. Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero

Alhaji Ado Bayero, born in July 1930, is the longest-serving Fulani monarch in Kano. His father is Alhaji Abdullahi Bayero who however ruled Kano for 27 years.

On Friday, October 11, 1963, the regional government  appointed Alhaji Ado Bayero as Emir of Kano following the death of King Muhammad Inuwa.

Meanwhile, Ado Bayero came to power in Kano at the age of 33, and ruled for 51 years.

History records him as the longest-serving Fulani monarch in Kano who came to power after the jihad in 1807.

The late Emir of Kano Alhaji Ado Bayero passed away on June 6, 2014 at the age of 84.

However, he left behind four wives, more than 60 children and more than 300 grandchildren.

He Kano state government appointed he now depose Muhammadu Sanusi II as successor to Ado Bayero on June 8, 2014.

Is it easy to remain on the throne for 50 years? It can only be by God's grace so they are great men.
