I beg to differ, web development is now so common. Nowadays, anyone can easily design a standard website with little or no programming knowledge. The cost of designing a website has dropped significantly over the years. You see many developers advertising 15k websites, 20k websites, it's now so common. So I don't really see any reason to revisit web development.

Inasmuch as I agree with you, let me clearly state that there're more openings and vacancies in remote jobs for web developers compared to most digital skill.

If you check the Job postings for most companies needing data analyst/scientist, you'll find so many requirements and years of experience that will most likely discourage the early birds from applying.
But same cannot be said of the requirements for web developers because a good understanding of HTML, CSS and JavaScript can secure you a position.

I will advice you to go for what you have passion for. If you have passion for web development and you are willing to dedicate your time for it, build projects and try to differentiate yourself from other web developer then go for web development. Some people might tell you that the web development field is saturated, but I don't think that is true for developers who know their onion. It is true that breaking into web development field is not as easy as what it use to be 5 years ago , breaking into the field is not easy for an average John but dedication and passion is always the key to success in any field one finds himself or herself in.
On the other hand If you have passion for numbers and you are very good at communicating then you can try out data science. Data science is still evolving Field unlike web development which we can say has gotten to its prime age and with a lot of people parading themselves like web developer, data few specialist and the demand for it is high.
The demand for data specialist will keep souring up since business are sparing up everywhere. unless businesses will one decided not make profit then their will be no need for data specialist Any longer.
There is always a good prospect in any field you choose. It all depend on you to make something out of which ever field you choose.
Dedication, passion and consistency are just the right words. If you opt for web development, then do it like no tomorrow,do it like your life depends on it, do it like without it your life will be useless. Don't look back.

SMH....it's clear you know nothing about web development so i wont bother talking much...All i'll say is web development is far more than designing websites...So in your mind now, websites like Jumia/konga/bet9ja/amazon/aliexpress or social medias like Instagram/twitter/reddit or bank websites and other top websites are designed for 20k bah...talkless of the developers handling the backend process and logic that makes these sites function 24/7 and most operate Dynamically...
Anyways, my only problem with Data Science/analysis here is the recent increase in irrelvancies in requirements...
While working on #makeovermonday, a tableau project dropped every Monday, i discovered some guru's who are only good in tableau and excel and have a good paying job..But here in nigeria, the requirement is just B.S ...
Also, to correct nwele2017, web development hasnt reached it's prime yet...it's still developing...soon, many business would go fully digital like jumia/konga/amazon/aliexpress etc...then you can say it's at it's prime....

Lol, I have nothing to say to you, only that my point was obviously directed to freelance developers. And you went ahead to start listing big companies that work with corporate IT organizations. That been said, in Nigeria where the technology market is not upright, the average business owner would surely go for cheaper and less quality. Spend a moment of your time to go through the websites of the average Nigerian business owner and you'll understand what I'm saying.

More than 90% of the federal government websites is nothing to write home about, so do you think they really care about quality?... Even private establishments, there are numerous so-called big companies with quack websites. They obviously picked a cheaper alternative, hence, the point I raised earlier.

We are practically saying the same thing man...
Because it's these same big companies that can afford hiring a data scientist/analyst..
But lets just leave it here...no need to prolong the talk...Las las, we all would be alright...The major stuff is just to keep improving ourselves the best way possible

Back then, i learnt
Excel, Tableau, Power bi, MySql, Python data science libraries( pandas, seaborn, matplotlib, plotly etc), then you can move to Machine Learning....i did a little matlab too tho..
There are others i might be forgetting but these are the basics i learnt....
All i'll say is PRACTICE PRACTICE and keep PRACTICING....

Modified: it seems there are new tools/softwares/Databases that are now required....you can find out

@Zabiboy you list is correct but, I will tell him to focus on Python (Pandas, seaborn) and SQL the most. He can pick either Tableau or Power BI since both are visualization tools. Learning both isn't bad. Excel is compulsory. After that, he can start learning Machine learning. That's were the real game is.

Sorry bro, Tableau/PBI are more than just visualisation tools, with only visualisation, you are missing over 80% of their functions!

if visualization isn't the core function of Tableau which can also be done with Python. I will be happy if you could list other functions.

Like i said earlier man, the irrelevancies in the requirements was a major stuff tho...although i think its a major issue in Nigeria as a whole...
I'm not really interested in getting a job with any of them yet cz i'm comfortable where i am...
So it's basically just trying to gain skills in different areas to see the one i can fully dive into incase i need a change

IMO, Power BI is Python and Excel combined, apart from ML.

initially I learnt PBI using Kiril Eremenko's course on Udemy, he only treated visualisation, in 3days I was done and I felt like what's the hype about PBI since its only Drag and drop... lol
I went back learning python till I was comfortable.

I was making research, then i discovered I could do more with PBI. I went back and got another video on udemy like 5gig content.
mehn this guy broke down PBI in and out.

basically PBI is divided into 3parts, visualisation, Power Query and DAX... with Power query, you can manipulate and query data to taste.
with DAX, you can carry out any data analysis calculation(This is deep).
Formally, when I wanted to do any anything involving datetime analysis and Forecast, I would use Statsmodel's ARIMA in Python, and that could take average of 10lines of serious Code, when I came across PBI, I could forecast with 3-4 clicks... mehn I was stunned.
most people don't know that one can Webscrape with PBI, you can do allota wonders with that monster package.

I would advice everyone to take full advantage of it if you really wanna go deep in Data Analytics.

you can contact me for materials or link to good materials.
peace

Edit:
When it comes to Business Intelligence, it has Data modelling ability where you can link many Datasets together so they interact as one and so many more.

Nice one. Gbayi. Power BI has a lot of functionality under the hood. The web scraping function is even real time allowing you to update your data through refresh at regular intervals, e.g., the Covid data on Worldometer. That tool is not to be underestimated.

Interesting!

Do you have links to the material(s) that helped you when learning?

I'm close to finishing the Statistics course with Excel that I have been learning. My next plan is to learn PowerBI & Tableau.

Evening guys, an in-house data analyst was invited on the 10pm so I decided to share his story here.

————————————————————-

He shared his report using stories, taking simple scenarios in history and using them to analyze Nigeria’s historical progressions over the years.

For example, Cost of Newspaper in Nigeria:
Newspaper in 1960 sold for - 3 pence
In 1980(?) - 50 kobo
In 2000 - N50
In 2010 - N150
In 2020 - N200

Cost of living is rising and affecting the country’s productivity and its citizens. Using BBN Laycon as a case study, in his words, “how many 26 year olds like Laycon find Nigeria a promising place with opportunities to grow?” —-> (Not a 100% accurate but you get the message)

Below is a chart he shared showing Nigeria’s population growth over the years with an estimated population of 1B in the next 48 years. He also performed forecasting on his data- sharing his insights on the predictions he got in terms of the country’s growth and cost of living.

I apologize for the low quality. That was the best shot I could get before the report ended.
