I thought it would be good to make a thread on latin countries that specifically have decent teaching opportunities for Nigerians.

I admit I don't have a lot of info on the market, but it seems like a great option. One of the good things about it is that it's mostly adult instruction, which is better for your career. Another plus is the high demand. Private instruction or establishing your own school could be very lucrative, especially with the low cost of living. There's also few barriers to citizenship or permanent residence.

I want to exclude certain countries from the discussion given their rampant violent crime, extreme racism, drug trafficking, lack of development, and other issues, e.g., Mexico, Guatemala, Bolivia, and etc.

Please share your experiences. smiley

I was once interested in this path, some years ago. But I found out that you must have English as your first language before you are even considered. If English is your second language, you will need some English teaching certificates and it's usually very hard to secure but not impossible. Things might be different now though, let me grab a seat and wait for other inputs.

You don't need to have English as your first language to be considered. English teaching certificates are not hard or expensive.

Latin America is one region where generally speaking, citizenship from a native English speaking country is not as much of a factor in determining whether you can get hired to teach English. Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, and Peru are some of the best places to start.

However, you will need a TESOL, TEFL, or CELTA certificate to teach just about anywhere in Latin America. Many employers will accept an online TEFL Certificate, but the best option is generally an in-country, in-person certification course that includes job search assistance.

Look at jobs and our guide to teaching in Central America and South America.

I highly recommend doing CELTA online and doing the in-person portion in South Africa or another approved African location.

Its not easy for Non native speakers of English to get a teaching job. Most of the schools prefer People with passport from the UK, Canada, USA, Australia,Ireland, and even South Africa is among.
So for anyone with any African passport its very difficult, but not impossible.

Getting the certificates is very easy, but getting jobs is very hard. 6 years ago my bestie and I embarked on this path, she went to SA for the Celta training did very well and got certified, when it was time for job hunts she was refused so many times. Guess what, an insider told us that if they are presented with a native speaker of English language with an O level and a Nigerian with a degree, they will always choose the native speaker.

South African citizens are considered native English speaking nation despite having 11 official languages

Only Australia, NZ, UK, US, canada, Ireland and SA fall in that category

This thread is for people to share actual teaching experience. It's not for trolls to lie about opportunities or tell fake stories. If you have nothing of substance to add, please show yourself out.
