Senate Minority caucus rejects nomination of Buhari’s aide as INEC Commissioner

Minority Leader of the Senate, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe has condemned President Muhammadu Buhari’s nomination of his media aide, Lauretta Onochie, as a National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Abaribe, who represents Abia South, described the nomination as a violation of the Constitution.

He said the minority caucus of the Senate is against the nomination and called on Buhari to withdraw it.

“President Buhari, by nominating Lauretta Onochie has willfully gone against the Constitution that he swore to uphold.

“Item F, paragraph 14 of the Third Schedule of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) forbids a card carrying member of a political party to be a member of INEC.

“The Minority Caucus of the Senate is against this nomination and call on Mr President to withdraw it,” Abaribe said in a terse statement in Abuja.

It's such a shame that our incompetent and dullard president will go to this extent to display his crass incompetence and "mumuism" by not only going against the dictate of the constitution but doing so with someone who is and would continue to be 100% biased against free, fair and credible elections.

My beloved brothers, this is wrong. Very wrong.. We can never achieve anything positive if we continue to act this way..

Would this ungodly attack reverse her appointment? Aren't peaceful protests and articles of enlightenment better than attacking a woman who is old enough to be the mother of some of us?

Since no one is perfect or without fault, if we continue to destructively attack one another because of our flaws, instead of supporting one another and harnessing our strengths, it means we'll never see any good in others, which means, Nigeria, our great nation, will forever be stagnant.. Which I am sure we don't hope for..

So, please, my dearest brethren, let us learn to love, appreciate others and offer constructive criticism, instead of going the route of bigotry, and hate..

Nigeria will be great, with our collective efforts.

Her appointment cannot stand as it negates the spirit of independence of the electoral umpire. Other nominees should equally be screened properly to determine their level of partisanship or otherwise, else the Senate should reject their nomination intoto.
