MITSUBISHI MONTERO SPORT: IS IT A GOOD BUY? by joa2013: 8:52pm On Oct 20, 2020
I needed a good SUV for use in a very rough terrain and for my farm works. I actually crave for old model 4runner but my budget isn't measuring up. So a colleague helped me to get a 1999 Mitsubishi Montero for a price of 650k. I consider the price low because everything is working perfectly with only fuel pump and one hob to change in front. Good tyres, AC, body, interior, suspensions etc.
I'm skeptical because I hardly see people driving the car around in Akure though my mechanic told me its a good car and that he handles it for some customers.
Please, what are the real issues with this car? Why are people not really using it.
The car is not as new as the one in the picture but close to it and same colour.

I haven't paid for the car now. Trying to find out if it has issues that aren't so easy to handle.

A hub and a fuel pump are normal wear and tear items. The Montero is a durable workhorse. Imho, price is fair for the MY in question. Look for an independent expert to give you a true position of the engine (any car that's driven in Nigeria must suffer some form of abuse directly or Indirectly), the Transmission on those cars will literally go on forever but the engines won't. And they can be pricey.

I have driven several Mitsubishi Montero units.

I currently have the Montero Sports 2003 limited edition. It came with full options; Very superior quality leather seats, A.C, and all the works. I have had this one since 2007. Please understand that I have other brand of cars too but this isy knockabout car which handles the Ogun State roads which I traverse on a daily basis.

Between then and now I have had 7 others and they are still being used in my business one capacity or other. Most of them I have had the rear seats removed and they are therefore very useful as sales/delivery vans for my business.

The suspension of this vehicle is second to very few brands. The body is solid and reliable. The parts are also very well configured. The parts are very available and significantly cheap comparatively.

The major problem is the seals. This is a serious problem for me though. I change them as necessary. The engine if not well maintained will cause you serious problems but my suction is simple. I change the engine every three years. And it's really cheap.

I do however think that based on demand and supply dynamics, the price of 650k for a 1999 model may be too high. If you need further help on negotiating for a lowee price you may wish to contact me via dm.

I would also suggest that you post the pictures of the vehicle for us to see, perhaps a few people may have suggestions.

Well, i think the price is a bit high at 650k, that should be what you pay for 4runner 1998 manual or 1995 auto with aux gear. The price of montero is 500k - 550k depending on where you getting your deal.
