This is as much fun as the documentary about him that I watched ahead of the 1994 World Cup.

Garrincha! The Little Bird! Many Brazilians believe that he is the greatest player to ever play football. They believe that he was better than Pele.


What I know is that he is the best dribbler ever and clips of his games are always throroughly entertaining.


I figured out (in the early 1990s) that he was the reason that Nigerian fans often shouted "Ey"! when a player was dribbled at the National Stadium in Lagos.

Once upon a time Garrincha dribbled a guy completely to the extent that the guy was still chasing after him after he had passed the ball. The guy did not even realise that he had already passed the ball!

It was at that game that Brazilian fans began chanting, "Ole"! anytime that Garrincha dribbled someone. They were immitating the chants in bullfighting rings when matadors evade the bull. It was this chant that Nigerians converted to "Ey"!

Just watch what he did to the guy at the 1:13 minute mark. What about the time that he was surrounded by opponents and yet managed to break free? This is pure entertainment!

Sir Bobby Charlton once told the BBC World Service why he hated Pele (he didn't really hate him, but you'll soon understand what he meant).

He was one on one with Pele during a match and Pele said, "Goal" and then feinted one way, went in the other direction around Sir Bobby and scored.

That is, he said "Goal" before dribbling Sir Bobby.

Do not foul a Brazilian or a Udinese player anywhere near the area. That was a guaranteed goal from Zico.

This was what led my brother to criticise Jay Jay Okocha in the 1990s. He felt that Okocha did not practice his free kicks.

Zico stayed behind after training each day to take a minimum of 50 free kicks. He would often ask the 4th goalkeeper to stay behind and practice with him, or if he couldn't get the goalkeeper to stay behind, he would hang 2 shirts at either end of the goal and try to knock them down with each shot.

He got a welder to build a metal wall that he used to reprsent a wall of players, so that he could practice getting the ball over the wall and under the cross bar.

That 1982 Brazilian team was insane!

Two of the greatest players in the world, two famous opponents, Brazil and Argentina, combine to totally destroy Bayern Munich.

These are two of the greatest players ever, playing for the same club. They were part of a fantastic trio in that club.


Careca and Maradona totally confuse Bayern Munich's defence many times over and over.

I need to post two videos of this man because his story is not just about goals and dribbles. The story won't be complete without a video of him smoking or chewing gum. That forms part of my abiding memory of him, smoking or chewing nicotene gum after a heart attack.

By the way, does anybody remember the name of the chewing gum that was sold in the early 1980s that had pictures of footballers like Zico and Cruyff in its wrapper?

There are two incarnations of this man that I remember. This is the first.

The second incarnation was from the late 1980s when I would see him on the bench smoking like a chimney. Sometimes he looked normal, but when he became anxious you'd see him smoking furiously.

I don't remember hearing or seeing any news reports about it, but I remember watching a match in the early 1990s and I saw him chewing gum like his life depended on it. The commentator said that it was nicotene gum and that Cruyff had to stop smoking after he had a heart attack (the heart attack occurred in 1990).

We didn't actually see Pele play and so they might have deceived us he was good, maybe not. I quite agree with others but Ronaldo De Lima was an exceptional talent. He should have been higher up than that.
