The lists are really contributed, age is Most reason. some parent are in hurry to put their children in school just after one year old of age. Any parent that put their child in school in such age without repeating some classes to that child should not espect much from the kid.
Re: Is this Why Students Fail Exams? by Nobody:
I agree with you, but some teachers/lecturers are lazy, if students don't give them word for word the questions they asked students in an exam, that's failure.

To me, teacher takes more blames why students fail than any other factor, many of the lecturers/teachers can't pass exams that they themselves are teaching. More reason they want word 4 word answer.

Some years ago, while conducting a workshop for a group of educators in Kaduna, I asked a question. "Why do students fail?" The reasons provided by these educators were numerous, but also quite logical. Some of these reasons include poor teaching, laziness on the part of students, inattentiveness, ignorance, social media, parents, exam malpractice, learning disability, peer pressure etc. As I listened to those educators reel out these factors and lots more, it became clear to me that all these reasons had one common denominator, that is, poor learning or no learning at all. Students record poor academic performance when learning is either insufficient or at zero level.

Over time, I came up with a working definition for learning. Learning is the process of converting external ideas or concepts into personal and secure information. Students who thrive well academically have simply learnt how to convert external concepts into personal and secure information. In other words, such students now own the information. Of course, you can convert concepts in a thousand and one ways, depending on individual differences.

Learning is not cramming. In cramming, students secure the information but don't personalise it, and so it never lasts. You can personalise information by paying attention to the why, what, how, where etc. of the concept from which the information is derived, not by cramming. I do not outrightly condemn cramming, however, learning holds greater benefits. Cramming can be done hastily, but true learning takes time. So, learning entails asking relevant questions. In fact, it's a process, not an event.

the reason why student fail exams is because our curriculum is theory based and not practical based.we run grammar school system instead of technical college curriculum.if u think am lying as the most ss3 brilliant student to define things he read Nd studied in jss3 heor she will struggle.but train them about practical like capentary handwork they will never forget after nysc.for example in biology a teacher is teaching about the human body drawing it on the board or showing pic.the student will still have difficulties in processing such info. why because their visual processing is not being utilized.that why u hear of body suit in the USA schools that shows the inner structure of the body to help our student visual processing.

Nigeria educational system,do not encourage practicals. A typical geology student may go to the field only in the final year and that's over, same goes with the chemistry and physics related courses, absolutely lack of practicals so how will a student cope, even if you have the brain to understand and get As but no practical, such a student is poor. The lecturers most times want word for word from their students hence, students try to kramp and give back to their lecturers in other to pass with good grades.

I just want to clarify something. There's a difference between cramming and memorizing. There are some things that must be memorized and there are some things that must be understood.

Even a computer has special memory unit for storage (hard disk) and another unit for logic and processing (ram)
I believe cramming is when people try to memorize what should be understood. In doing so they turn themselves to donkeys.

Yes but in universities student fail cause lecturers want them to fail
Re: Is this Why Students Fail Exams? by Charity85(m): 1:26pm On Oct 29, 2020
Correct. Unfortunately the pattern of Education in Nigeria encourages cramming. That is why students are comfortable with handouts and don't want to read beyond that.

If a student does not understand the subject matter it means he did not learn... if he doesn't learn then he will fail. Learning begins with the teacher... does the teacher understand the subject matter?... then if he does.. can he teach/get his students to understand? I strongly believe when we have better teachers operating in a system that supports learning only then there will be less exam failures.

Pls feel free to condem cramming, its partly why we hv a broken system. My teacher once define cramming as the first state of madness,
I can bet u today, most graduates are synthetic learners. w.r.t. ur topic, i believe the Socio-economic factor could also be a reason. How can u read or understand what was taught with an empty stomach. Remember u a product of ur immediate environment. You are what u eat, ur brain needs certain vitamins to be retentive and even receptive.

Re: Is this Why Students Fail Exams? by toprealman:
Cramming is part of the learning process. If you passed through some courses..... chemistry, biochemistry, medicine.....you must cram some things.....you just can't help it.
Overall, most lecturers and teachers in Nigeria are not well grounded in their subject area. To cope with this shortcoming, they become unnecessarily hostile to students and that further makes the learning process almost impossible.
We have facilitator, we have instructors, tutors are also there......finally teaching is too deep.

Education can't make u rich or give u financial freedom, pure fact. People should learn financial literacy instead. Cypto is making people rich.
Re: Is this Why Students Fail Exams? by TGM2015: 1:52pm On Oct 29, 2020
Summary poor learning. Remember that learning is sole responsibility of the student. You see, most of this generation of students never want to study but to read and pass. They might not necessarily be cramming, they may just want to read and understand without personalising the material. That is when you see most efikos, they can solve almost all questions but call them to explain or teach you, they will find it difficult.

They understand it at the level of the educators or creator of the learning materials but not at their own level of understanding. They understand the knowledge pass but were unable to break the knowledge down into pieces and build their own personified knowledge. They are knowledge consumers and not knowledge creators.

Studying a learning materials can take you up to 10 times time of ready the material. They display this traits in all social media
