uuzba:I really don't get what you are correcting but the correct acronyms are: JSS - Junior Secondary School 1 to 3 now Basic School 6 to 9, and SSS - Senior Secondary School 1 to 3. |

| Re: Is this Why Students Fail Exams? by NaMeAboki: 2:24pm On Oct 29, 2020 |
Teacher4Life:Yes indeed; however, another important factor is lack of the patience to carefully read the exam question in the first instance and subsequently understand/comprehend the answer required of them e.g. the question may be, ''how many LGAs are there in your state''? You'd be surprised how many students would laboriously pen down a list of all the names of the LGAs, thinking they had answered the question correctly; ignoring the keyword 'How Many' which clearly demands for a numerical (number) answer instead of a nominal one. Many such persons abound in this forum; judging from their frequent misinterpretation and distortion of information arising from a woefully poor comprehension - yet the same set of ppl are likely to be the first to chant 'aboki no go school' at the earliest opportunity. |

Abatemtem:It's not about the system... It's more about the individual's choice!!! In the first place, no one should be compelled or unduly influenced to take up courses he or she is not passionate about. Once the passion is in place, learning follows easily. |

JIMMY1393:I agree totally... This is a big issue with educational system from basic to tertiary!!! It's quite shameful that over 96% of students in tertiary institutions, even postgraduate ones still feel a compulsion to cram just to obtain a highly valued paper qualification, at the expense of true knowledgeability and dexterity!! The education system or approach of educators must change... Let's stop rewarding crammers, and actually start rewarding proficient and knowledgeable students. |

Aside all the reasons you gave for failure, another important yet ignored reason why students fail is anxiety. Anxiety carries with it forgetfulness, loss of memory. When you're anxious you can't examine, or reason carefully. To solve this problem, you should learn how to prepare, have a timetable and stick strictly to it. You should also be disciplined. Incorporate resting in your timetable as it is very important to rest. Eat well... Meditate early in the morning and late at night. This helped me a lot in school. Another thing is to look for less bulky but more effective materials on the subject or course, it gives you the vibe to want to read more. |

As one who has passed through the four walls of school and also taught students during my Nysc days. I can tell you for a fact, that the number one cause of why student fail is - POOR learning environment. if the teacher cannot create a very happy and exciting class if the school owners provide a classroom with poor ventilation, poor chairs and desk. students will continually struggle to keep attention. This is the major cause!. I know how it was when during my Jambito Year in UNI, and how several departments will assemble in a hall for General courses. Ratio 600:1 lecturer. Poor timetable, students don't know what lecturer is to come and when, all you get is handout handout handout to compensate for lecturers absence. How do you expect a student to learn under that atmosphere? It's the major reason people abroad do better than here. it's also the same reason Private Uni students may score better than Federal UNI students. it's in the schooling environment. solve that and you have solved a lot of things |

LEARNING and SCHOOLING! Two different things. You can LEARN without going to School, but adding Schooling to it might make you learn more You can go to SCHOOL without Learning much, but learning in School makes your learning more productive. School is a formal place of learning but learning itself, is a life-long endeavour in searching for, and acquiring knowledge, which can be done anywhere and everywhere. You learn best, when you have INTEREST in what you are Learning What you have interest in, are things that you believe are BENEFICIAL to your Life/Future/Goals Now, let us WALK BACK and see why Students FAIL in School: Our SCHOOLS/LECTURERS "TEACH" us what are not BENEFICIAL to our Life/Future/Goals and as such, we have NO INTEREST in what they are trying to teach us, we do not LEARN anything from what they are teaching thus, FAILING any Exam they set, based on what they teach, comes naturally. Ofcourse, one can cram and still pass those Exams but one has still not learnt a damn thing from such teachings. ![]() What we need to do so students can learn, is to restructure our School Curricular, to integrate what is beneficial and of interest to the students and their aspirations in life, into school learning. #FormerTeacher #BestTeacher. |

The world technology is taking over so a new means of learning structure should be installed and not the older method to help keep up moving with the current wave. i think the older method learning is becoming too obsolete. |

The current school system is majorly flawed! Students are not taught real life concepts but theories and outdated scenarios. Engineering students instead of a final project that is practical and physical are being told to write 20-30 page paper on a topic . Business students are not taught how to form a company and the day to day running of that company, they are not made to understand stock market and investing rather they look at theories and concept from the 1800s. 90% of Nigerian graudates cannot write a proper CV/Resume, 70% cannot answer behavioral questions using scenario based answers related to their field of study. When was the last time most of the cirriculum for our universites were reviewed? You expect students to pass 10-15 courses per semester, can we honestly expect them to give it their all in each course? Remove the redundant courses, update the cirriculum, update the teaching mechanism and expose them to real life practical application. All the Lebesque, Lagrange, Porter, Newton theories without conceptualization is RUBBISH! |

Part of the reason students fail , is when you refuse to sort the lecturer of that course, if he/she is the corrupt type, no matter what u wrote in that exam . |
