Make them block foreign social media apps say wetin happen?
Na so una close border say make them no import rice, now a bag of rice is chasing 40k.

Competion is good; If your app can't compete then maybe it isn't good enough. Afterall, Facebook and twitter dey before IG, snapchat and now tik-tok scatter everywhere.

There's enough room in the sky for all birds to fly.

2baba. He's found his voice at last. Nice. Anyway, a ban or even regulation of the SM space will spell doom for any government in Nigeria,

1) The people are woke

2) It may spiral into another round of protests, such that the govt cannot handle.

3) It will be counterproductive to any gain the country has made in the path of democracy.

I guess you didn't watch the video, forget the headline, watch the video and then comment

Why are Nigerians getting worked up over something that is next to impossible.

The FG barely have much influence over their ISP providers ( they control the kill switch of internet as far as Nigeria is concern) let alone some companies far away in Northern California with so much power scaring the shit out of the EU and the US.

Quote me on this, it not possible.

From time memorial, many media people like to believe that they are the pillar of the society that holds the government responsible. However, if they want to do the check and balance on the government, who was it that kept them in turn, check and balanced, for their own action? Basically no one.

News outlet only answers to the demand of the consumers and their own political aspirations, which is why there were and still are so much widespread use of sensational reporting and falsified information for perhaps as early as the invention of the writing system itself. Pen is indeed mightier than the sword. You can literally murder not just one but an entire race of people with just a few lines of inciting report, yet there's a heavy restriction on weapon ownership but not media reporting, don't you think that kind of strange?

While I agree that the government total control on media reports is potentially dystopic and may allow them to avoid their own responsibility. There's still something that the government can do that can put the media outlet in check without affecting too much of their reporting freedom.

I personally prefer some form of content rating that helps people distinguished fact-based from opinion reports. Some major media outlets already have this in place, I would love to see the government involvement in giving a more detailed definition of what is fact and what is an opinion and enforcing the system on the national level. They could even go further to require news outlet to further classify their content based on source i.e. “verified sources”, “not verified sources” “official sources, etc. And introduce some heavy punishment to the none-compliance.

There are more calls today for the regulation of social media but I personally don't think that is necessary (if even possible.) Social media by principle is a system of semi-professional reporting at best, everyone should already know not to take one seriously (if not backed by a licensed news outlet.) It is when the major news outlet starts to copy the social media style of semi-responsible reporting (or even outright referencing a social media source) that we started having a problem.

This is how you fail exam, how does it relate with the topic of discussion.

This is a prove, people just read headlines and form opinions.

You didn't watch the video but went on to write something irrelevant with the topic of discussion

Yes they should, most countries do that.

Iran, Russia, United states, china Pakistan, India ban some apps and then usage in local apps started increasing.

It also helped in job creation

These people want police to be held accountable but they(influencers) don't want to be held accountable.

Loose lips sink ships. Our celebrities have loose lips capable of sinking ships. They must be held accountable.Sone should even be made examples sef these next few days.Anyone of them that posted false information leading to carnage and destruction in Nigeria without also posting the corrections even when that false news has been debunked.Such persons should be made examples.

With position and power comes a responsibility to use that power carefully.

I can smell desperation from 2baba to make up for his cowardice past but it is a welcome development. this devilish regime won't succeed in gagging us
Cowardice? How do you define cowardice exactly?
He has always spoken against bad governance. Always!
He dared to join a protest against bad governance years back, as a frontier, when no celebrity dared to, although it seems the powers that be shut him up and made him withdraw, yet he sent a message across. During the #EndSARS protest, he lent his voice too. Like several other celebrities whom I did not see on the streets protesting, I did not see him physically protesting on the streets (for whatever reasons best known to him), but I read his several tweets and IG posts regarding the course, he identified himself with the movement.
I see no cowardice in this guy, I see bravery and wisdom instead.

Tuface just misses the point completely. It is a global socio economy now and closing ourselves in will only retard our growth exponentially.
There is also need for healthy competition , after all wasn’t Finntech (owned and developed Nigerians) acquired for 200million recently? There are other numbers of tech and app devs doing great things working in collaboration or partnership with some of the companies you mentioned with nil support from the government.

Most importantly, Social media is the last bastion of justice for the powerless, voiceless and the oppressed in Nigeria. The ruling class and their corrupt acolytes know this is our only weapon.
Our traditional newspapers and news stations were compromised a long time ago. Content or information is often biased in favour of their owners political affiliations.

Allowing the government to regulate or restrict social media is akin to arranging deck stairs whilst the Titanic was sinking.

Actually he is right.

Misleading headline.

Nigerian government can help in improving indigenous tech companies.

[s]If Twitter, Facebook and the rest are banned, if will make indigenous tech companies and developers grow. They can provide their own app with less competitive from foreign companies[/s]

Another issue is where to host the server to protect user's data.

I believe Nigerian should try to invest in server farms, it will help Nigerian companies in protecting their data at home.
Make them (govt) ban am so them go they feed us with FAKE NEWS as usual abi?

Our potential tech companies seriously need COMPETITION to grow. Banning it (SM) won't encourage any useful growth.

THIS IS OUR GENERATION/TIME. fvck d ever failing govt.

When did NTA or RADIO NIGERIA ever aired or broadcasted any valid news?

Ask yourself why Nigeria Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) placed a fine on ARISE News,
Channels TV and AIT.

Government that is hiding common rice palliative is the same government you're thinking they have such great dreams of the youth to invest in tech? The way Nigerians think sometimes, baffles me to stupor. undecided
