Good morning prof.

In respect to your reply.

I built a desktop application for hotel reservation using native application. How do I channel this to writing a paper for publishing?

The desktop app you built is great; however, is mainly good for writing a business proposal, not an academic paper. The reason is in your app, you will mainly have just the front-end, back-end, and the DBMS codes/functionality. For an academic paper; you will need to have an abstract, introduction, methodology, results and discussions; conclusion.

In the academic paper, you will need a section for literature review, it will be difficult for you to do a literature review just based on your app. WHY? Anybody and many people have built the same or similar app using different front end and different database platforms; irrespective of the front-end language or database; the app will work what will matter now is efficiency and add-ons. So no way for you to get literature on this.

Also, I intend to build face recognition/identification for an hotel as well. How do I channel it suit the line of PhD.

Note. I have been developing applications, now I intend to channel it to academics. Your reply will kick me starting.

First, you have to define what your Ph.D. will look like. What research area you are interested in and then write the Ph.D. proposal sent out for evaluation. Take note; not all Ph.D. proposal/project is publishable unless its into academic pipeline. Just building one Face recognizer app does not capture what a Ph.D. is about, and one of the reasons is that many people can do the same without sweating much. But for it to be able to go in for Ph.D. then you may have to be comparing things like the language, technique, and performance of various Face-recognizer you have built and remember science must be reproducible.

Let me give you some example of AI topics that can be published and you can streamline that to your goal:

1. Air Quality Prediction Based on Machine Learning Algorithms
2. Secure and Intelligent Mobile Systems
3. Deep Learning-Based Biometric Recognition
4. AI in Smart Buildings
5. Deep Learning-Based Smart Farm Techniques
6. AI for Cyber Security in Human Health and Medical Devices
8. Applications of Artificial Intelligence in Pharmaceutics
9. AI for Cybersecurity
10. AI in wearable and flexible electronics systems

Let me open just two of these to give you an idea.

AI in Smart Buildings

Smart building refers to any structure that uses automated processes to automatically control the operation of the building, including heating, ventilation, air conditioning, lighting, security, and other systems. In recent years, AI technologies have been widely used in smart buildings, which improve the operation and management efficiency of buildings. At the same time, these technologies can also improve the safety and amenity of building users.

So if Ph.D. research is directed here, it will be publishable and many already published work on this.

Air Quality Prediction Based on Machine Learning Algorithms

Worsening air quality is one of the major global causes of premature mortality and is the main environmental risk, claiming seven million deaths every year. Nearly all urban areas do not comply with the air quality guidelines of the WHO. This health threat could be diminished by developing models to forecast air quality and inform citizens of the risks of practicing certain activities during elevated pollution episodes. Several machine learning (ML) approaches have been used to predict a set of air pollutants using different combinations of predictor parameters. However, with a growing number of studies, why a certain algorithm is chosen over another for a given task is puzzling. So a Ph.D. in this area can use two to three ML models of air quality to better understand their predictive power.

NOTE: From what I read online, PhD is all about solving problems, hence this question.
Thanks.

No Ph.D. is not just by solving problems. A bus conductor is solving a problem for the bus driver by coordinating the passengers, assisting with navigation etc......does it means the conductor is doing a Ph.D.?

A Ph.D. is an academic degree focused on original research, data analysis, and the evaluation of theory. The goal is to develop significant and original research in your area of expertise and this research may now be tuned to solve challenges, develop a new solution, improve on an existing system or learn something new to give a deeper meaning to the poorly known phenomenon.

Recently Published from our Lab: Photocatalysis for treatment of hospital wastewaters via UV-induced system

Summary: For decades, antibiotics have been used both in human and animal medicine to prevent and treat bacterial infections and have saved millions of lives from multiple infectious diseases. Since most of these antibiotics are recalcitrant, they have been detected in vegetables, drinking water, groundwater and various aqueous environment which is dangerous as they often result in Super robot bacteria strains that shows antimicrobial resistance.

Researcher: A Female Ph.D. candidate from Libya that focused on designing effective methods of treating pharmaceuticals and emerging pollutants wastewater. Supervised by Wip7. We had recently published some of the data in other journals and this a recent publication.

Publication: This result is published in Q1 Journal with an impact factor of 5.8, Citescore of 8.8, and indexed in all well-known databases. This is a free journal. Our University research unit and government research unit will reward us with a total of 3000$ for publishing this work as an incentive.

Manuscript tense: Using correct language for manuscripts

Using the proper language will aid a faster review of the submitted manuscript. Poor language use can prevent the manuscript from being sent out for review or published. It is important to note that If editors and reviewers are unable to understand the language of the manuscript, therefore the full impact or message of your work will not be understood. Even if your findings may break new ground, poor quality of language may mean that you don't get the attention you deserve.

Note: I have seen many individuals who talk professionally and compose outstandingly. The same persons, however, struggle to comprehend the manuscript tense. I'm not an English teacher, I'm just someone with a clear understanding of how the results of studies are conveyed, and I hope someone here would benefit from this.

Let's get started
.....................................................................................................................................................

The tense of a verb represents the timing in general terms. The past tense indicates that an action has already taken place; the present tense [/b]indicates that the action is actually unfolding, and the [b]future tense implies that the occurrence has not yet happened.

So here, for each section of the manuscript, the tense to be used will be given and some examples will also be given to explain it.

Title of the manuscript: The manuscript title doesn't need to be a full sentence for several articles, and no verb is required.

Introduction section:
--------------------------------------------------------------------
The introduction section contains several verb tenses, each of which provides a distinct meaning for the accompanying sentence. The present tense is appropriate when stating a fact which is generally accepted; using the present tense implies that the sentence represents the current interpretation of the topic at hand.

Example: “Water is composed of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom” or "Unsafe water kills more people each year than war and all other forms of violence combined"

References to previous studies (literature review) are often included in most introductions. When referring to a previous review with findings that are still important, use the present perfect tense; because it indicates that the research or observations were made in the past but the results are still valid.

Example: “Wip et al. have demonstrated that MgO is photocatalytic" or “ according to Wip et al. a decreasing trend in the tumor have been observed in glycolytic cells"

Also, the present tense is used when a specific result, paper, table pr figure is the subject of a sentence. That is if your manuscript continues to express conclusions of published research.

Example: “the results of Wip et al. study reflect that 2.5 g of the drug is highly effective”

The past tense is required in some other sections of an introduction. When directly referring to the techniques used in the previous paper or statements that are no longer considered valid.

Example: it is correct to say “Wip et al. synthesized five nanoparticles for cancer treatment and found two efficient nanoclusters” or, “early scientists thought that electrons traveled in specific orbits.”

At times, a combination of tenses is fine in the introduction section. For example: “Musa suggested [past] that Rhinoplex contained three molecules, but subsequent research has proved [present perfect] the existence of a double-bimodal structure.”

Method/methodology section:

The past tense should be used in the method section since it is a summary of what was done during the research.

Example: "we examined five bacteria cultures for antibacterial resistance to CuO” or “rat cells were irradiated and assayed for lead poisoning"

Thank you wip7,

This is quite educative.

Let me contribute on the 'manuscript tense':

The Abstract:
Present tense is used for highlighting the gaps in your research area, the aim and objective of the article and the application.

Past tense is used for highlighting the important methodology and expressing the executive summary of your results.

Past perfect tense can also be used to express your research achievement(s).

The Conclusion:
Past tense is used to summarize the main findings, the major implication of the study and the limitation of your work.

Future tense is used to offer suggestions for future research.

...to be continued

Continuation---Manuscript tense: Using correct language for manuscripts

KelvinCoaster completed the abstract and conclusion parts.

So I will continue with the Results and Discussion sections.

RESULTS SECTION
______________________________________________________________

The result section of a manuscript is often written mainly using the past tense, as the experiments/research outlined in the text were completed before the paper was written.

Example: “we observed rapid degradation in the tumor after 20 mins” or “56.5% of the participants reported a remarkable reduction in salary”

Note that in certain cases, the present tense is required when referring to the whole paper or to specific elements of the manuscript like tables, figures, results, or data, etc.

Example: “our findings demonstrate that coconut oil is essential for bone function" or “Table 5 shows our X-ray data,” and “In this research, we report the discovery of a novel compound for cancer treatment".

Note that sometimes the number of tenses [/b]can be more than one within the same sentence:

Example: "Note that no photocatalytic activity was observed [b][past tense]
in the absence of cobalt nanoparticles, our results show [present tense] that silver is [present tense] required.”

For the last verb, the present tense is appropriate because the observation extends beyond the specific experiment referenced in the initial part of the sentence; it is now considered a statement of fact based on the results.

DISCUSSION SECTION
______________________________________________________________________

This section follows the same rules as the manuscript's previous parts. Use the past tense when referring to particular findings or results, but use the present tense when presenting conclusions: "we conclude that carrot is necessary for the human growth".

Also, the discussion section may contain future tense if instructions for additional study are given:

Example: "The techniques mentioned here will allow for rapid testing in the field"
