thinkmoney:Good points. But Benin officialdom and bureaucracy had writing. This was an empire that exchanged ambassadors with Portugal as early as the 1500s. The bureaucracy was divided into several departments, each handling this or that trading nation/region and other such segments of commerce and diplomacy. There would have been literate scribes and bureaucrats involved in such operations and keeping records of transactions and trade agreements in scrolls. Oba Esigie for instance, ruled in the early 1500s, and spoke and wrote Portuguese. I read there was a Bini-Portuguese 'pidgin' language that developed during that time, and which was used and spoken fluently by many officials in the bureaucracy. So there was some writing among the ruling classes, which, like in other parts of the world at the time, was not extended to the mass population. The Hausa states also had writing, with their ancient Ajami script. The Igbos and Efiks had Nsibidi writing. Yorubas had Aroko, the beautiful parabolic messaging system. It was the slave trade and colonialism that led to the destruction of the numerous records that would have been kept in various forms and formats. |

Rosskivvy:I agree very much with your point. I guess its impossible for any relatively advanced civilization not to have a type of sign or writing at any level of development for keeping and transmitting information. But then again, the nature of the writting materials available must have made them not to last long. Obviously there were difficulties in passing on knowledge and the thick forest cut of many civilizations from others. So in Africa knowledge also didn't spread well. Civilization many times rose and fell in isolation |
