The Truth Behind Sanwo-olu’s Proposed Cancellation Of Pension For Past Governors by DebbyJose: 11:46pm On Nov 11, 2020
The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressive Congress, APC has cleared the air, following the news making round that Lagos Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has condescended the place of past Lagos governors by deliberately repealing their pensions.

In a statement made available to newsmen by Hon Seye Oladejo, the APC Publicity Secretary, the governor’s bold step is only a pointer to the conscious sacrifice and backing that the party stakeholders and statesmen have embraced to rejuvenate the economy in the path of recovery.

The statement reads;

Our attention has been drawn to the widely circulated falsehood about the purported truth behind the proposed repeal of the pension laws in Lagos State as they affect the past governors and their deputies.

The governor of Lagos state, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, while dropping the hint about the repeal made it explicitly clear that it was a move to cut the cost of governance and show sincere the political will to re-order the priorities of the government in the face of current realities.

The move which has been widely applauded by a cross section of well-meaning people actually jolted the enemies of progress.

The after-thought response would not have been dignified with a rejoinder if not for the deliberate misinformation and falsehood tainted with bitter politics.

While the state government acknowledges and appreciates the tremendous goodwill its efforts to immediately kickstart the rebuilding process necessitated by the mayhem, it is mindful of its role to lead from the front while totally upholding the public trust.

The governor, typical of his administration, consulted far and wide before arriving at the decision to repeal the public officers’ pension law for our collective good.

We commend his exemplary courage which has added to his lofty credentials.

Since its inception, the Sanwo-Olu administration has focused on cost saving measures to make funds available for important projects.

The deliberate refusal of the governor to acquire official vehicles and the low-priced brands allocated to high ranking state officials were moves in the right direction.

The claim that “Lagos State intends to borrow additional huge sums of money from the Capital Market again, but it must cancel the illegal payments to Governors/Deputies by revoking Ex Governors Pension Law in order for PENCOM to qualify it's new borrowing for PFAs' investments” is completely false.

While we encourage opposition as part of the development of our democratic culture, deliberate falsehood and outright lies do not represent the quality of minds that our people deserve and is not the kind of culture we want our children to imbibe.

Lagosians are indeed glad and appreciative of the steps taken by Mr Governor to signal selflessness and personal sacrifice in governance and public service. If this is a good step for the people of Lagos, only someone who do not wish Lagos well will disparage it; especially using lies and falsehood.

It is expedient to state that the circular issued by Nigeria Pension Commission in Jan 2020 to Lagos was basically on queries relating to operational differences between the Pension Reform Act of 2004 and the Lagos State Pension Reform Law 2007. It had nothing to do with pensions to Governor’s or their deputies.

Pencom being a very professional organization and regulator will not raise a valid point and make a u-turn on it, without a resolution of those points. They issued a letter of no objection being satisfied of the resolutions of all the points raised.

Mr Governor is focused on

Infrastructural projects like the Regional roads, the Lekki Express way rigid pavement , three lane dual highway from Eleko junction to Epe, the urban roads , regeneration projects in Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Ikeja and Kosofe. He is focused on the Red line rail project amongst many others in Alimoso, Agege, Somolu, Ikorodu.

While the Lagos State government is not in need of praise singing from any quarters, it remains a disservice to deliberately feed the unsuspecting public with falsehood at a time like this.

Seye Oladejo

Lagos APC Spokesman.

Governor Sanwo-Olu has chosen that path that connects him with the heart of people. This move is delightful that is saves the state from wasteful spending. Those former governors do not really need the humongous monthly pay.

Imagine a civil servant getting 3 million as gratuity after serving for 35 years while someone who raped the state for 8 years getting paid as the sitting governor.

Former governors are not more superior than other citizens, hence, the need for total scrapping of the clog and blocking the leakage.

It is also timely because of the economic reality of the season, we are officially in recession and can't be receiving ourselves. Imagine the number of civil servants gross take-home of the ex-governors will pay.

Proposed cancellation or not. The fact still remains that Ambode wants to be totally sidelined cos he'll have nothing to his name.

Tinubu has chop and he's still chopping
Fashola has chop and he's still chopping
Ambode chopped but it didn't get to the intestine before the food was operated
Sanwo is chopping and will pave way for more chops for himself and his bosses.

I have two questions for you.

1) number 1 who initiated the pension for past governors in the first place and why wasnt it rejected by Mr tinubu then? . undecided

2) Mr tinubu brought fashola, he did well but wanted to rubbish the native lagosians and destroy our land for their own purpose. He increased Lasu school fees to 250,000 then knowing that lasu is the school most native lagosians attends.
Thank god we stood against that through student unionism . so he brought ambode and now sanwo olu. They've been spending money lavishly in the past years but Lagos state indigene scholarship bursary has not been paid for the past three years. So how his he close to the people when he neglect the natives? undecided oh! It seems their not relevant in their state bah?

Good one from Sanwo Olu, it's never too late to do the right thing, and regardless of his motivation maybe political, it's still a fantastic move worthy of emulation by other States

This is a good development all Nigerians should applaud. Largesse of office being enjoyed by Nigerian political leaders is surely one of the major problems of Nigeria.

Lagos has set the pace and others should follow. Simple.

It would've been good news if the governor was in opposition party.. As it is now the only ex governor that will be affected is Ambode.. Others will still collect the money illegally

I'm neither praising Tinubu for the sabotaging pension bill not justifying the reckless bureaucractic spendings by the LASG. I was saying the move to scrap the bill is a good idea as it will save the state coffer a lot of money.

We all know LASG pioneered that wasteful and anti-people pension law at the twilight of Tinubu's reign in 2007. It was enacted purposely to feast on the people thereby making himself and family a huge liability to the state.

It is the responsibility of indegenous lagosians to deliver themselves from the enslavement of Tinubu. Whatever lordship he's having on lagos land and aborigines is not the fault of anyone else than the indegenous people themselves.

What were the indegenous lagosians doing when he converted the LASU landed property to his private property? Was it the fault of other Nigerians when Tinubu grabbed the state's land in Surulere and became shoprite landlord?

Indigenous lagosians should please wake up and deliver their future under the total sabotage of Tinubu. You can't fault other Nigerians for his wrongful dominance of your heritage.

Get yourself ready, massive voting against his puppets is a weapon of mass destruction to send him to a dustbin of history
