It's takes 5000 hectares of land to produce 1million bags of rice, Ebonyi state alone has about 72,000 hectares of land available for rice farming meaning that she can produce more than 10 millons bags in a single planting season, sometimes last year governor umahi celebrarated 190,000 tons of harvested rice that is to say if more is invested in irrigation and fertilizer she can produce even more. dont get me wrong it's not really necessary to plant just rice you can still mixcrop you farm or you plant or select type of crops to farm within a period of time ,like a subscribe to planting beans and groundnut towards the end of the year like November to January since they require lesser rainfall we plant them during dry season.. If you observe I am only talking about Ebonyi even though there are still arable fertile in other 4 states,it's because they are the only state really passionate about agriculture ,when it comes to agriculture give to Ebonyi you cannot beat them in their game,we cannot still subscribe to other states like anambra but Ebonyi will forever be king. If we can make produce 20 million bags of rice beans and cassava in the southeast then were 80 food sufficient and that is 100% possible no need to depend on others. |

The few things south east import from North are onions, beef and to some extent beans and potatoes. As for rice, we don't actually eat their rice because it is sub standard. You that is about to quote me to talk rubbish, answer this question "when you want to buy local rice in the market what type of rice do you tell the seller you want buy, is it not ABAKALIKI RICE?" |

Good concept but poor delivery. You need pepper, oil, flavour, animal protein, tomatoes etc to compliment the rice before it is finally served. All these extras are equally food. So what's the plan to produce them? Don't also forget, you cannot use every inch of ebonyi for farming. you need space to live in, drive through, and more. Good concept but poor delivery. We have been celebrating potential since independence, it is time to get real. |

bigpriik:So one hectare can give 200 bags? I doubt that. That translates to 10,000 Sq Metre divides by 200 for one bag which is 50 square metre per bag. Sounds too good. |

South East can produce all. That's why IPOBs want to forcefully take Benue because of their fertile lands. ![]() |

Did somebody talk about importing oil, pepper and tomatoes from North? God of mercy, is this how dull products of Nigerian education system have become? How can a region in the rain forest import oil and tomatoes from a region in Sudan and mostly sahel savanna? Hey, I'm dumbfounded. Besides what is the shelf life of tomatoes and heat resistant capacity of the harvested bulbs? Nigerians are really dull. |

Incase you people don't know, the black pepper that is popular in Nigeria is actually imported from Cameroon, which I believe doesn't count as North. So tell me what North gives people apart from Onions and beef? |

CodeTemplar:Of course?let do the maths, with good agricultural practise you can produce 10 tonnes per acre, now 10 tonnes=10000 kg divide it by 50kg (1 bag) that's 200 bags I don't type nonsense. |

CodeTemplar:Oga I never said the whole Ebonyi I said the land available for rice farming in ebonyi If I said the whole Ebonyi that means the figure would be bigger than that,Ebonyi is 5 times bigger than Lagos State yet Lagos land is not completely used up despite the high population density.lets be logical . . |

South east can produce her yam , sweet potato , rice , cassava , pepper , tomato , cat fish , goat , fruits ( orange , banana, mango , pineapple , and many more ) ...food is not a problem in this world ...buyers of food are the problem |
