It is right to marry one's true best friend and it settles all these matters. In reality, using a husband as next of kin is the right thing to do but women generally assume that if they die, he would own all their property and still marry another wife or spend it on another woman. on the other hand, a man knows that a normal woman would take care of her children first even if they end up remarrying after their husband dies. It is more common for men to cheats woman than for a woman to cheat a man. If a man does not use his wife as next of kin, his family can cheat his wife but it is rare for a wife's family to try to inherit her property after she died if she is survived by a husband.

When I was married, I used my husband as my next of kin only because he would kill me if I did not and he would surely go out of his way to find out. He used me as his next of kin only because he had no educated close family member and is enemies with the educated brother. He also trusted me so much that I am not the type to squander anything if he should die and high possibility that I would not remarry. Even though we both used each other as next of kin, it was for the wrong reasons.

Thank you for sharing,
Did you divorce him or did he pass? Am just curious what happened that you are no longer married

Why won't it be rare for the wife's relatives to cheat the husband when all the wife had has been indirectly willed to her relatives? What exactly would the husband not be cheated on?

Women are truly strange beings

Nigerian women loving you for what you can offer rather than who you are isn't nature, but greed as it's peculiar to Nigerians mostly.

If you are well traveled, you'd notice that Western women love with genuine purpose and intention.
They love for values, morals and how you make them feel rather than what they stand to gain from you as a person.

I am tempted to say that, most of our women love with ulterior motive

Nairaland men are just crybabies that refuse to reason rationally if they read something that does not favour them.

Reasons why women don't use husband as next of kin have been outlined here but they want to behave like blockheads and refuse to accept reality.

Insult and generalize negatively about women as much as you like but facts remain, no woman wants to die and then have her husband spend her life savings on another wife. in Nigeria after a wife dies, there is 80% possibility that her husband will marry another woman and even stop showing concern for her children and abandon them with the new wife, that's why you see many cases of step mothers treating step kids like garbage while the father is still alive.

Secondly you men need to remove your eyes from your wives money, only una want submissive obedient wife that cleans up after you and is your life time home keeper, child-rearer, you still want to spend the money of that same woman that you want to control her life. Make una reduce your selfishness abeg.

Most Nigerians are completely clueless as to how NOK works in banks, so they write those things out of sentiments or availability.

As someone that has seen many people write their NOK, it is a very big lie that most men use their wives. A lot of women do not even know their husbands accounts across banks.

It is indeed very true that most or many women use their kids, who are sometimes minors- which shouldn’t be the case. The rest can use their husbands but actually entrust a lot to their grownup kids, that is why most fraudulent transactions on their accounts are usually perpetrated by their kids, especially their sons.

It is also true that there are a few Nigerian men that use their wives and those ones always do for all the right reasons. They are not the majority.

I have noticed there is a recurring issue of trust in Nigerian marriages- no party is innocent.

That said, NOK is very different from the beneficiary to an estate.

NOK: Someone the bank can reach you through or on matters concerning you (e.g) you decide to slump in the bank.

Beneficiary: Someone that actually receives all or part of the deceased’s estate. It is not automatic.

The NOK can be the beneficiary, but the beneficiary mustn’t be the NOK. Whether you write your spouse or not, they still top the list of your beneficiaries when you die intestate (which is the case with MOST Nigerians). Exceptions apply if the court decides otherwise, you have a will that states otherwise, your village people are stronger than your spouse/kids...etc grin

If you don’t want your money to go to the person you are fucking raw all your life, GET A WILL.

If you die without a will, they are No1 on the hierarchy, all things being equal. If you like, write your great grandmother, the bank won’t call her, neither will they give her your money because you wrote her name when you opened account.

NOK in bank details isn’t a special thing. Some NOK get arrested or threatened for the crimes committed by the actual account owner.

In all thy getting, get understanding...
Get a will too!!

Not entirely true. I know for a fact that pensions of deceased who died interstate are paid to the NOK. Any other person apart from the NOK will have to get a court order to recieve the funds.

Who you choose as your NOK is very important.

Op said people should ask their spouses the NOK to their bank accounts. I don’t know of pension, so I can’t speak on that. I spoke on bank accounts, they are not automatically beneficiaries.

As for pension, if my husband uses my kids as his beneficiaries- I can’t think of any reason I should have a problem with that. They need the money more than me.

All of you know nothing about NOK and the main reason why both wives and husbands usually don't use each other as one. A NOK is strictly a person's living closest blood relative - offspring, parents, siblings, and other blood relations. A spouse doesn't fall into this category. Most banks in North America and Europe still adhere to this rule to date.

@Pocohantas, NOK is a "special thing," especially for an unmarried person - it only becomes a less important thing for a married person who died intestate because the legal surviving sane spouse automatically becomes the beneficiary of their estate, regardless of who is the NOK. For an unmarried person who died interstate, the NOK always has it easy to formalize claim of the deceased estate - I know that rules are hardly followed in the country in most things, so that's understandable when it doesn't work swiftly like in other climes.

Anyone who's been involved in project finance, loan, or facilitation with international banks, North American and European banks especially, will understand that truly NOK is a special thing.

If you like, be talking of American and European banks like you have an International Passport. This is Nigeria, write whatever you want in your banking details- the minute you drop dead without a will, your family would bring everything required of them.

A blackmailer who has all it takes to blackmail one of the most vulnerable people around him, but has refused to do so despite provocations, must be a saint. Don't cause me to appropriate sainthood to myself. LOL.

I feel your hurt, though, because I know that a man of my standing and standard doesn't come easy, so overcoming the loss of not having me for a permanent keep can never be easy.

You and your lackeys should stop projecting yourselves towards me because no amount of vilification, twisting, noise, and gang up can change a truth or taint me; infamous liars and underachievers. Anyway, upholding, recognition, and acceptance of truth has always been an exclusive preserve of conscientious people and shouldn't be expected from you and your ilk.

You, in particular, are an open case, so no amount of posturing, projection, and twist can wash away the real you that I and some other sane people know better. But then it's always been easy for me to forgive your shortcomings since I know that your condition is inherent and you can't help it much, and of course, for the good part of you, which I can attest to everywhere as someone who knows you better than yourself. Don't twist your mind; the good part of you doesn't include the self-absorbing philanthropy and self-arrogation of purity. LOL. Once more, refer to my personal text, on my profile here, for a more effective dose to help you recover a bit because vilifying me won't help you and can't have an effect on me.

Meanwhile, to Klass99, the new birthed attention seeking, low IQ, bias/chauvinistic, feeble-minded, conceited, and sententious element, stop trying hard because I'm not available, and you don't even have up to 25% of what it takes to command my consideration assuming that I'm available. Others before you who've up to 49.9% of what it takes to command my consideration didn't get it, least of you who doesn't possess up to 24.4% of it. LOL. Of course, I neither disguise nor lie.

expressing simple ideas in complicated sentences. grin

Cinderella a.k.a LordKO the Rejected man. Learn to converse intelligently using clear, concise sentences.

Truly smart/intelligent people don't talk or write this way, you try too hard but still fall short. Why na?

And stop collecting CVs from people for phantom jobs that do not exist, then claim they're chasing you for a relationship and threaten to post their name, contact information and other details you got from their CV.

That's really low, you and Floyd's killer have a lot in common. I won't forget in a hurry how you thoroughly embarrassed yourself with that CV incident either. cheesy That usually happens when you tell one too many lies

The low IQ klass99, a moniker serving a ban, justly or unjustly, doesn't equate to the owner disguising. Meanwhile, if my English is difficult for you to understand, that's understandable, citing your low IQ and non-mastery of the language. Expecting you to understand my English is like a sane person expecting an insane one to act normal all the time. Of course, I know that you admire it, though, because it's an open secret that one's unjust open critic is their biggest admire in secret. By the way, you've 8 writing issues in this small text, so I understand the reason why my English appears too hard for you and your ilk. Work on your punctuation in particular.

On the issue of CV, I feel the pains you and your friend and everyone who hates truth have been passing through. Once more, upholding, recognition, and acceptance of truth has always been an exclusive preserve of conscientious people and shouldn't be expected from you and your ilk.

I'll continue to help qualified and needy people in all forms and where and when necessary. And of course, I'll still continue to reject anyone who doesn't qualify for my help or possess the qualities required to share closeness with me or feel entitled to it.

I know that you'll be feeling like someone who's won a multibillion naira contract now that I have managed to give you some attention; enjoy my magnanimity. However, direct your further mention to small-minded people like you.
