I would advise that you learn python programming due to its wide applications in various areas such as web development, machine learning, artificial intelligence, software testing, big data, network programming etc. There are tons on courses online that can bring you up to speed fast

If you want to build web apps, start with HTML,CSS then learn JavaScript.

Also learn a backend tech stack like MERN or MEVN or LAMP. You can Google backend stacks and databases. Be ready to rack your brains
Sorry for the mention but i want to ask the difference btwn programming and web dev or are they same thing?

Computer programming is very vast. You must have a target. Knowing your target makes the choice of programming language easy.

If it's just a general understanding of computer programming you seek then go for java first. Later you can add more knowledge from other language.

Java itself is a very big language. It might take you a long time to start doing very cool stuffs with it...Your first language is the hardest, others will come easy.

Advice from personal experience: Time na money..don't rush into any program language. Figure out what you want to achieve (developing apps, web development, data science etc) and carefully pick the right language to begin with. Don't wory much..I'd you like programming very much and want to be successful at it you will end up learning more languages. Learning never ends for a programmer.

Good luck
My own aim is Data Science which Language is good for me and how tough should one prepare for Data Science ?

Na to do engagement with Python be that oo.

Python has a lot of plugins for data science. It's the best programing language I will recommend for data science. Its a bit complex compared to some other languages because the IDE(s) used for python are not that advanced.

Going for python will also benefit u academicaly..as most Nigerian schools only use python & Fortran (not recommended ) for data science.

Reading your response to some of the comments, you are an enthusiast of programming as you see a future in it or you feel it's cool. Yes, you are right! The future is digital and yes, it is so so cool to be a programmer, writing jumbled text on the screen that only you and your colleagues understand. Confusing every other individual. Lol.

Okay, that aside. In my honest opinion, start with Python. Here are the reason why:

1. Python is general purpose. It can be used to build a lot of things, from websites, to desktop software etc.
2. It is novice friendly. The syntax is quite easy.
3. You don't have to know a lot of data structure and algorithms to start coding python. Unlike java and c++ that you have to know when U must create variables with it's datatype.
4. You don't have to worry about displacing a semicolon or closing braces.

Again, in my opinion, starting with python will expose you to thinking logically at the beginning of tour journey. When you decide to explore the website part, you can then decide wether you want to do HTML and CSS and all those other stuffs. Or you want to build desktop app, or write kernel for operating systems or write codes for some custom hardware.

Just start. If the enthusiasm is there, every other thing will fall into place.

You can contact me on twitter @chineduukpe to add you to a group where we shared resources. Mostly Abuja based though.

I wish you the very best in your journey.

Let's build a better world, one line of code after another. Cheers.

Thanks so much. I have been thinking Python too . Next Questions sir ?
Is Data Science a lucrative field ?

I'm an Accountant that's why I think Data Science is good for my career and profession, am I right ?

How easy does learning Python makes learning other Languages such as C, C++, Java , JS etc ...

also, is it easy to combine Data Science and Cybersecurity (Infosec) together or just stick to one ?

thanks as you answering !

...first of all you need motivation...

Then c lang for algorithm and data structure concept

then java for oop

then does functional programming laguages just to appreatiate functional and oop programming.

then php, core and its extentions and mysql for backend manipulation

then javascript extensions e.g jquery, node etc
then andriod for mobile app

this is if you want to be fully engaged

I will advise you to go ahead and register with a registered computer programming institution in your local area, it will do you good because you will be given certificate and be certified and hired by anyone or company for your future prospects.
Don't rely on social media advice or nairaland comments because this is a foundation you are trying to build.
If you are trying to get yourself occupied during preparing for university or college you can engage with online lecture pdf, videos, courses materials from Massachusetts Institute of technology or any renowned institution, you can get your hands on those course materials for free, ask questions to world professionals who are trained and will lead you to the right path.
All these people will tell you this and that, it may be true or not. You will get confused at some point to ask questions who will answer you and give you the right answers or ideas to forge ahead?
That's your choice anyway, Good luck to you.

Hello Mr. Chinedu, you have given the best advise here. Yesterday, I downloaded phyton video on YouTube, to be candid, for the first of being exposed to programming, I have fallen in love with it. So easy compare to others I used to here about. I don't know how to use Twitter, can I connect you via other platform like fb or watsap sir? Thanks bro.

Hey bro, I'm on the same part with you. I've been learning programming for quite some time. Nov 24 will make it a month I've been on Programming. Guess what? I'm improving day by day!
Before I went into learning Programming, I found out that there are various programming language, like java, c#, Python etc. From reviews I saw and read from various sources, I came to conclusion that I should start with python programming language. Moreover, there's this video tutorial about python programming language I came across here on Nairaland. It made me become too enthusiastic about python. But before this, I have this dream of creating a website which I can't disclose for now. I'll advise you, you really need to hold on a dream in order for you to last long learning Programming. What's that special thing that made you want to be a programmer? If you have an answer to this question, it will keep driving you to learn everyday.
I won't lie, it is not easy. Programming is very versatile and wide, it somehow gets complicated but with consistency, you'll overcome the stumbling blocks. So far, I've been able to run some codes on my own even after much practises.
Bro, I'll advise you to take ur time and watch that video tutorial. Start from the beginning, follow whatever he's doing there, let your pc be there with you. I'll drop the link below.
In order not to confuse yourself, make sure you have gone through all the videos and have done some practises, then you can go for pdfs or python apps.
Currently, I'm reading a concised pdf about python and using a tutorial python app(not python app itself, though I still have the python app) to learn and run some codes.

At first everything will be strange, confusing and frustrating. But don't give up. I created a thread here on Nairaland and I've dropped some questions when I got confused, we have programmers experts here ready to help a newbie, you can create yours as well. Don't pay anyone a dime to learn programming, atleast I didn't.
Like I said, Programming is a complex world on its own.
Lemme burst ur head a little, Programming is mathematics, but this time around not a boring one you'll need to just write on paper. Programming is a mathematics that you'll write and then get to see it create something spectacular and solving problem u can never think of. This will excite you I swear. Excitement comes in more again when you've successful ran some codes on your own after much practice.

Bro, start with python. It's very easy compared to what I've been hearing about java, c# etc. (Though I will eventually learn java after python)

Programmers like naijasensei, bovage, semtu, karleb, and etinosa1234 here on Nairaland has helped me tremendously. You can always call on them if you're stuck for more clarification.

Bon voyage as u start this beautiful quest.
