How To Reduce Energy Consumption At Your Home/Workshop/Office (A Case Study Of Benin Republic)

Here in Nigeria, the cost of providing energy/light to run a business or power the home is a major headache for many people. Government light is usually unstable, yet crazy electricity bills are served at the beginning of each month. You start to question if you are paying for darkness.

But would you be surprised if I say most Nigerians share about 20% or more in the blame due to ignorance?
I'll tell you how from my personal experience.

I schooled at Houdegbe North American University in the neighbouring country of Benin Republic. One of the first things I noticed was that they use Energy Efficient Bulbs everywhere I go to in the country.

My first thought was, "Maybe they're managing the light so they won't increase their electricity bill paid to Nigeria, since that's who provide them light through WAPCo". Then on second thought, I realised it is also a smart way to reduce our electricity bill back in Nigeria. And if everybody is doing something similar, light consumption will reduce, and that's a first step in we having more light to share.

The second thing I noticed was that these Beninoise (or Beninese in English) have a habit of switching off any appliance not in use. They don't leave the TV on when no one is watching, offices share air conditioning system by fixing it right above the middle of the partitioning of each office, they regulate the time for their deep freezers to be on or off, they don't even leave their energy efficiency bulbs on when not in use. It is even crazier at the barbing saloon.

My other observations are:
. They don't boil water unecessarily, and if they do, they pour it in a flask/water bottle.
. They prefer standing fans to ceiling fans...they will cite energy consumption reasons.
Etc.
I will update this when I remember more.

MY ADVICE

At home:
. Use your appliances very wisely (my junior ones can put on the AC on a rainy day. These kids ehn)
. Manage water so you won't have to pump water much times.
. [Add yours]

For business owners:
. Urge your staffs to shut down tech equipments (including computers) when not in use. I used prepaid meter as a student and laptops were the number 1 energy consumers in my room.
. If possible, let your staffs work from home few days a week. This will not only reduce your energy consumption, it will also make them a little bit relaxed which fuels creativity. (Give this a try)

I know as a Nigerian, you are not a slave, and you don't want to live like one. But neither are you a king my friend!
Save now, enjoy later!

Not sure that you will be able to find their "services alive", but I'm sure that they are not the first and the last one. But I find the information that they provided very interesting and at the same time very important. Especially, nowadays when everyone is wasting energy, water, food and don't mind about that. I think that it is time for us to wake up and to understand that energy won't be available forever. Even we have, now, specialists as these http://www.focusenergia.com.br/ guys who are providing energy to everyone, they are working on the big market and try to give to everyone that energy which they need. We're not sure how long this will take...So value it and let's not waste!
