Morning All
In this hard times of high pop and normal cement prices, one needs to put on his alternative thinking cap.

Its in the area of wall screening or smoothening.

I remember sometime ago @Aventures mentioned something about am alternative way of screeding, using cheap paint on the wall and using sand paper to smoothen it afterwards.

Please could we discuss the actual process?

E.g. What type of cheap paint?
What method of sanding is adopted? Hand or mechanical? What type of sand paper?
Lastly, what final paint will be used? Will will and satin be possible on such wall?
@gbadexy can help.

Please let's discuss this so that our building passion will not erode as prices fly high.
Cc
@sadyfact, @next @spyder880, @diodarves, @sezgy @abdulwastecx etc

From my experience working with gbadexy, I just primed the walls and painted. The intended outcome was achieved. The priming was applicable to the external walls, fence and internal walls as well. This was cost-effective for me. It wasn't necessary for me to screed. It should be noted that this a rented property. The option may be different if it's a personal or retirement property but I don't think I will screed but you never know. I focus more on the plaster job from the start instead of patching a poor plaster job with screeding.

You are smart!
I experienced this at one of my brother's project at Ibadan(elebu area), during the casting, the iron bender stole some 12 and 16mm rod and hide it at the edge of the nest building fence! We left there LTE that day and I was there early nest morning, I recovered all this rod and I told my uncle should get someone else for the job. Thief everywhere! undecided

Imagine 500k just like that in one single job. The stealing and cheating as became noun in that country they didn’t see anything wrong in it. The system is like Peter robbing John and live go on.

I pray that what happened in 2014 do not repeat itself again.

Do “naija oversabi homeowners” ever listen?

Limitless choice sounds delightful in theory. But in most work situations, endless options clog the drain. Homeowners should learn to set clearer goals and avoid analysis paralysis by setting cut-off points and sticking to it.

In my whole life, I’ve never set out to buy a vehicle by myself. I always ask professionals to do it for me. I can still count nothing less than 14 to my name.

The reason I always ignore most Nairaland requests is simply because a lot of people don’t know their limit. Even a master satisficer (master pleaser) will falter when worn down by too many choices.

I am still trying to figure-out what you mean happened in 2014?
Are you referring to issues you had with people like @Qc1 issues? @Maverick issues?, @Brag3 issues?, @EuroMillion issues?, @3Strike issues?
Except you are very specific, l am lost.

BTW,
DIY is not just about saving money alone, it is also about empowering yourself to be able to do things yourself but even more about the FREEDOM and the KNOWLEDGE you gain, gives you to use at any time you want.

Buying a Car by yourself, is not a rocket Science, in these day and age of Google, Online Dealership Displays, not to mention that anyone can walk-into a Shop and the Assistant is there to help you out. I have been buying cars since l bought the first one wayback in 1992 and have lost count, l still bought one just before the Lockdown in March.
So, whats the big deal here?

This stealing of a thing is in a typical Nigerian man(the one close to us are artisans), everybody are looking for shortcut to live big.
That’s why I stick to my Engineer, his service charge and that of his work craft( Bricklayer, carpenter, iron bender etc) is higher than what I see on nairaland but belief me my engineer will drop your last kobo for you. He will use best practice to reduce cost. So I don’t experience all this stealing of a thing. I sleep well when am home and I concentrate on my job at office while job is ongoing at my site.
This is the second house my Engineer is building for me and his honest and trust is second to none.

Thank you Sir. There’s nothing in home building that can’t be DIY’d.

Sure, in most reasonable locales you’ll require a sign off from a licensed professional who will critique your work.

You nailed it my brother that decision of you don’t have anything in naija especially from my late mom take me over 10 years to change mine mind when I give her what she wanted in her choice location, l can’t say how many more since then. I’m lucky sha, never had that much of headache from mine Engineer's it’s always bad experience from here and in front pages of Naija newspaper every day it’s so sad. What a society we created for ourselves.

We’ve not had cement from Ewekoro in weeks until today and the guys are still coming back tomorrow as we’re planning to kick off Phase 2 of our project next week.

That’s a good one if we are getting cement from Sagamu and Ewekoro plant.

That's the route I take, I get and negotiate all inclusive charges, he works with his carpenter, iron bender, bricklayers, helpers etc, when I question the amount he will give a detailed clarification and being a technical person myself I can relate and understand the situation, he working for me to earn and make profit, that's not a crime.

The real issue is there are too many ongoing projects. People are seriously buying despite the price increase.

According to stats, Lafarge made more sales during this crisis. Even the Channel Partners.

Despite the scarcity, I’ve received over 13 trailers between Nov and Dec.

What happened to FG executive order to get priority supplies? If you can get lorry load I bet this is your chance to hustle for them but getting paid will be a herculean task. Capital and profit will go into bribe for processing and signatures.
