Firstly, the costs associated with building brick walls will be too astronomical, the volume of a 9 inch CMU is nearly 17 times that of a standard brick, which means that it would take 17 times more bricks to build a house than blocks. Now don't forget that walls made of bricks are almost always double-skinned, that is 2 layers of wall joined with mortar. So that means more and more and more mortar. Also the labour costs will be too high, imagine how much bricklayers will charge for laying 17 times more bricks! Not forgetting transportation costs of getting the bricks to the site, as more trips would be required. Thirdly clay bricks are expensive to make, well in Nigeria at least due to the epileptic power supply, as the clay will have to be baked in a kiln for days. Granted there are other alternative energy sources but that's topic for another day. Also in a tropical climate as yours using brick walls will be too hot as brick walls do appear to hold heat better than concrete blocks.
As for wood, well all I can say is that the wood used abroad are 'engineered' to give it maximum strength. Do in conclusion Nigerian builders are not stupid

This wooden building in Japan stood for over 1,000 years with no fire. But Nigerians are scared to use wood? Monkey people

There goes another conditioned, self hating black man who goes around calling black people "monkeys".

Do you actually realize you're racially abusing your own self and your mother and your family by using such terminology?

Lemme guess...That obvious fact simply flies over your head.

Thanks for explaining the situation based on your expertise. The OP should have asked questions first, but as a typical colonised self hating black man, his first inclination was to call us monkeys with no brains, not realising that HE is the only dumb, ignorant, brainless and stupid cretin in our midst.

Depending on the type of wood, it will rot over time with constant rainfall.

Brick is a better idea though.

Then explain to me how they are able to make full brick houses for just $8,000 -- or 3 million naira in Rwanda. Here are the building plans, if you are interested.

Imagine getting beautiful houses like these for just $3 - $6 million naira. This is what it looks like when builders use their brains.

I was thinking of this recently. Dangote should channel that his ₦100bn funds for the police this way: 90% of Nigerian police stations should be pulled down and rebuilt with red clay blocks. There wouldn't be any need to paint them with those fake paints and the buildings won't be having cracks within a few months.

Where are the woods? They have gone into almost extinction. Timber felling in reminant forest reserve now being rationed, wood is getting closer to steel now in terms of cost weight for weight. I just completed High pitch roofing of a modern designed roof for 3 bedroom in Lagos now with close to 400k only on woods alone.
We don't have private investment in forestry. The existing stock majorly owned by government is being depleted.
We need good government that understand National development planning.
Most times when I want to comment on issues pertaining the state of this nation, I get overwhelmed by the futility of it all.

Most people cannot begin to appreciate the extensive damage corruption has caused in this country and its far reaching implications.

I would love to explain to @ aconomist but I don't think any amount of explaining would do as he appears to be neck-deep in his conviction that he is a monkey and the white man is god, first and foremost that is an incredibly small house, secondly and more importantly, the concept of economies of scale is clearly playing out here. Assuming that guy builds 500 of such houses every year, my guess is that his labour costs will be greatly reduced. For example instead of paying each bricklayer a certain amount, say 70 naira, for each brick layed, he could just hire them on a permanent basis and pay them 50k per month. Imagine a brick layer lays 100 blocks a day, at the rate of 70 naira that will be 7000 a day for each bricklayer, and assuming a 5-day working week, that will amount to 140k a month. To save costs he can just employ them on a permanent basis and pay the min wage every month and give them daily targets. So the reason why the houses are cheap, my friend, has got LITTLE to do with building and EVERYTHING to do with economics.

There's no market demand for such house. If there was you'd be selling them making money instead of ranting. People generally prefer concrete because it more durable. Wood is more likely to be damaged by fire, moisture and termites.

You are absolutely correct. Weather is also a prime factor.

the problem in Nigeria in times of constructing building with woods and bricks. is as listed below am a builder a very good one at that.
*clients choice.
*lack of quality woods
*bricks needs a machine to be produced. we lack does machines and the funny thing is that bricks are more durable and cheaper that blocks.
*climate is another problem. our weather and there's is not the same
*meason don't allow the young educated guys to practice. that's why the building industries is not improving you will see similar buildings everywhere. I have many things to say on this. I rest my case here

For security reasons.

In Europe lots of houses don't have fences.

Some are made of glass doors. Nothing much happens.

But in Nigeria even with 14feet fences, concrete walls security etc criminals would still try to rob u

The building is not cheap because of economies of scale. The bricks are significantly cheaper than cement and they are also lighter which makes it easier to build a foundation. The building plan is designed to use the absolute minimum amount of material -- something called optimisation and efficiency, which are concepts most black people don't understand. Read here for more information:

BTW, no other region on earth has such a massive gap between income and home prices as Africa. In other cultures, builders use their brains to build the cheapest possible housing that anyone can afford. The specific brick designs I showed you are actually based on European homes 200 years ago, when they faced the same problems we face ( low income workers moving from villages to cities). They used their brains to solve the challenges, while Africans would rather stick to expensive concrete that clearly doesn't work for our situations.

Also, last time I checked, Europeans didn't have electricity either 200 years ago, so how were they able to make cheap brick houses back then while we can't in 2020? Blacks are pathetic.

You're right on your cost analysis, but two things you didn't get right.

Brick houses are cooler and not hotter. Those who have lived in mud houses will let you know better.

Also, the woods used in the west are not engineered. They are sourced from oak, and oak can last forever.

OP, using the word 'stupid' when you want to present your opinion is fallacious. It would have sufficed to just say what you think is better. Meanwhile, who are "Nigerian builders"?

I sincerely do not understand. Why do peopl come online to criticize imaginary Nigerians? OP, aren't you Nigerian? Tell your engineer/architect you want to use wood for your own house and they'd gladly do that for you. Or is there a law prohibiting you from doing that? Must we always come online to insult "Nigerians"? Like we all know, and like we can see on this thread, brick houses have advantages and disadvantages just like cement houses, each person should go with their choice. Let's stop this attitude of trying to force our preferences on others.
